Gray was curled lightly in Aaron's lap, watching the flickering flame of the firepit. The beach was a wonderful place to be, especially with a lot of family there. Or so Zael and Aaron had said.

Across from Aaron was Uncle Maverick, and sitting cross-legged beside his uncle was a cousin - Reever. He was an odd sort. Bunny. Black. Very odd. But pleasant enough. All around him where strangers who were supposed to be friends. Dragon, he had met. A nice man that smelt like 'clean'. Ben - a child like him, just a little older. Others. Even some that didn't appear to be a natural part of the family. Other beachgoers. The party was an attractive force.

The black-skinned child was not asleep. Not by a long shot. He was pretending to be, so he could be free to relax and listen to the conversations around him, try and piece together tidbits of information he might find useful later. Such a shame that these people were so open-mouthed about family affairs. When he became older, he'd know how to use this information more to his advantage.

Zael kept on moving through the flickering firepits, and the crowd, inviting people to come join them, even if they weren't part of the family. He was acting as host, as well as Dragon. This party was big enough to need more than one.

It was rare that he got to leave the city. Andy had taken a weekend off so he could take his brother and his new niece out, and so far it was going okay. Whyst needed to be monitored carefully when out in public, particularly so far from home. The man loved romantic sunsets and long walks on the beach, but the people who frequented the beach made it awkward for him to just wander and enjoy them.

The little family looked like an odd picture was they walked along the beach, Andy wearing a light shirt and jeans, little Coco in a summer dress with a swimsuit under and a shawl over. And lastly, there was Whyst, wearing a smock, fancy curly toed shoes, and leggings with his jeans. The latter had a problem dressing for weather or setting, but he seemed happy and comfortable for the present. His brother knew, however, that would not last, so it was best to have Coco enjoy herself while she could as trips to places like this were going to be very rare in her life.

The little girl clung shyly to her uncle's hand, looking at all of the strange people and wondering what was going on. The group of people clustered around the firepit up ahead looked both strange and interesting, but also very very intimidating. And as she spotted them, she tugged at Andy and pointed, wanting to know what it was. Andy looked up and his eyes darkened sadly. Oh dear.

Seeing a chance to escape the boredom, the rabbit boy hopped up [no pun intended], and turned to his father and uncle.

"Father, I request to be able to take Gray to meet the ones that are staring our way." he asked, waiting politely for a response.

Maverick simply nodded, as did Aaron.

"Go along, then." the King said, handing Gray to Reever. "But be careful, you know how he likes to wander off."

The rabbit nodded, and scooped up his kid-cousin, moving over to where the little girl and her family stood. He extended a soft-furred hand.

"I couldn't help notice your confusion." he said, in an apologetic tone. "My name is Reever - the other two at the fire are my father Maverick, and uncle Aaron. This entire gathering is Arrikanez - our family. But we're always happy to welcome friends. Would you care to join us?"

Gray peered at the girl from the rabbit's arms. Squirming enough got him set down, and he walked over to her, taking her in. Blonde of hair, pretty, and smiling. Such a lovely and malleable package, all wrapped in polka-dots and happy. He canted his head to her, and gave his best winning smile. He couldn't - or rather, his parents didn't think he could - talk yet, but he could charm the socks off someone with just his looks. His eyes. All three of them.

Whyst had been about to respond pleasantly to the rabbit boy before Andy carefully put a hand in front of him. "No thank you, just now. We're on our way elsewhere." the man said firmly, more to his brother than the child.

Coco looked at Gray and her already not-very-smiling face quirked in confusion as she darted behind Andy's legs the rest of the way and hid her face from him. Weird boy - why'd he have too many eyes? And why was he smiling like that at her?

The rabbit boy nodded a bit, and withdrew his hand.
"I wasn't sure." he said, giving a bow. "The invitation still stands, however. If you'd like to join us for a while before you reach wherever you're going... Please DO come sit with us?"

Gray gave her another smile. He studied her. Watched her reactions. Noted the way that she sort of gathered that he wasn't all there... And enjoyed it. He bowed to her much the same as Reever had bowed to the others... but when asked to come back with the rabbit boy, he planted his feet, and refused to move.

"Come on Gray... Your father will kill me if you run off."

Still, the child wouldn't budge. "Gray... come on - you're annoying these nice people..."

It wasn't precisely sneaking out of the house when it was the middle of the day, but Alair couldn't help but feel a bit guilty as he left. He just needed to be out in the sunshine and fresh air for a change instead of cooped up in that musty old house.

As he walked down the beach he could already feel his spirits start to rise. The salt-laden air brushed gently across his skin and kept the warmth of the sun from making the day too hot. By the time he got halfway down the beach a smile had broken out.

As he neared a clump of people, Alair broke out into a full-on grin. That tiny little sensation, like an old friend that he didn't actually know, was jumping up and down, waving it's metaphorical arms.

Apparently there were other scrolls here somewhere. Cheerful enough from his walk on the beach, Alair waved at both groups.

"Hello!"

"No. I'm afraid we must be going." Andy repeated, taking Whyst's arm carefully as the other blonde had started in the way of the fire. This was not a good idea.

Coco immediately began tugging at her uncle's sleeve, wanting up NOW. This boy was creepy and he wouldn't go away!

Andy looked down and scooped his niece up. This was getting worse and worse wasn't it?

About that time a large green skinned boy arrived. Great, more people. More chances to lose Whyst and upset Coco. "Good day." he greeted Alair stiffly.

Aaron himself came over now, having concluded his conversation with Maverick. He physically picked up Gray, and held him against one hip in the way that most parents know very well. He gave his child a stern look, then glanced back at the man and his child.

"I'm sorry if Gray's causing you problems." he said, giving a warm smile. "I can see you are quite busy... But won't you let me get you something to eat? It's the very least I can do to make up for my trouble-maker son."

Reever watched Gray quietly. He was doing it again. He looked... not evil, so much as... sinister. That was something that the rabbit-boy had noticed a long time ago. Whenever Gray got that look... things happened. Aaron and Zael hadn't noticed it themselves. Nor did Reever think they ever would.
He physically placed himself between Gray and the blonde girl, giving her a concerned glance, before looking back up at Gray. He was rewarded with a tiny hiss, and a pout. Good. He wouldn't get his way this time.

Aaron turned to the other who had entered, and waved with his free hand. "Hello!"

Alair blinked as he was replied to rather curtly by one of the families. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea.

"I'm sorry," he blurted out reflexively, taking a step back from the two families. "I just.. I thought I felt another scroll kid."

The boy glanced from one group to the other. "I'm sorry for interrupting. I'll.. just...," he waved his hands a general motion the good mood from earlier crashing, "um... go."

Andy shook his head stiffly at Aaron. "No thank you, sir. We really need to get going and visiting is not the best idea for us right now."

Luckily, however, Whyst had his attention diverted from the very pretty firepit to the green boy who had talked about scrolls. "Scroll kid? Ooh, my Coco is a scroll kid. Big brother got me a pretty letter on a scroll, and then a lady came and poof, now I have my Coco." the way he talked, it sounded like he was talking about the drink, which made him sound rather odd.

The little blonde decided to look over at the older boy now. He seemed nervous and scared too! She smiled shyly and waved a bit at him.

Aaron blinked, and then started to laugh.

"Gray here came from a scroll as well. Such an odd scroll, too. Pretty... but odd."

Said scroll-child looked over at the female, then across at the older male. Now that was odd... Fear. He felt FEAR when he looked at the green-skinned one. Now why was that? Why would he be afraid of... Someone bigger than him. That had to be it. Someone LIKE him, yet much bigger. And by extension... perhaps more powerful. He hissed again.

Aaron bopped him lightly on the nose. "None of that. What have I told you about hissing? Cut that out this instant."

The penicillin scroll relaxed a bit as at least one of the people in the group acted friendly, giving him a smile and a wave. Admittedly it was one of the toddlers but better that than the chilly reception the adult had given. The teen's hand twitched a small wave back, keeping the wave down by his side.

Alair frowned in confusion at the hissing toddler before nodding at Aaron. "I've heard most of the scrolls are... odd," he finally replied with a nod. Certainly it had been the case with Papina, and Halycon.

He hesitated, glancing from Aaron to Gray before giving in. "Is..Is he alright?"

Whyst smiled brightly at Aaron and Alair. "He is a snakey." he said in a matter-of-fact tone as if that were a perfectly reasonable thing to say about a child who was hissing.

Coco turned and pouted at Gray. Stop hissing at the bigger boy! He wasn't creepy! She stuck her tongue out at him before waving at Alair again and making a shy smile.

Andy made a grumbling noise under his breath and rubbed a temple with his free arm.

Gray's mood changed when the girl stuck her tongue out at him. He grinned back - a happy grin this time, and not a creepy one. Squirming a bit, he tried to get out of his father's arms. He wanted to play with her! Why? Who knew. But he did. He wanted to play.

Aaron shifted his weight, and tightened his grip on Gray. Just enough that he could keep hold of him, without hurting him. He turned to the concerned green-skinned teen. "Oh yeah. He's fine. He hisses sometimes, and we're not really sure why. Dragon... err... my father... thinks it might be because he's afraid." He took the kid in. "And you are much bigger than him - and a stranger. But he'll warm up to you soon enough, believe you me. He's an incredibly charming boy once get gets to know you."

He turned to the other, and chuckled. What a wonderful observation. And it proved him right, in a way.
"Snake, huh? You may be right. His scroll was embedded with the Eye of Horus... Or so Zael says. We're still not in agreement as to what type of animal a 'horus' is. I think snake. He thinks bird. We're all confused about it. But then again - it's not every day that children pop out of scrolls."

All this talking! Not enough playing! Gray squirmed about again, until Aaron had no choice but to set him down. He stuck close to his father... for now. He wanted to play and have fun with that little girl! She was like him, wasn't she?

Alair shrugged uncomfortably. He couldn't really understand where someone would be afraid of him, but he supposed it didn't matter.

He shifted uncomfortably from foot to foot, not sure what he was doing anymore.
