As the caravan leaves the small town behind, they move toward a mountain range. Luckily they don't have to surmount the peaks, as there is a pass weaving through the mountain base. It begins to get very cold--cold enough that even the most free-spirited of gypsies begin to wear shoes and heavy clothing.

A cave opens up on the left side of the road, made and inhabited by who-knows-what, and a path to the right a ways away from it leads far from the road before forking into two.

After a hard day's travel, the wagon pulls into a clearing off the main road. When the wagons are all circled up, Valelldia steps down from her wagon and gathers the gypsies.

"These mountains...they hold power. Some of the oldest magic in the world was born here. I want you all to explore, but be cautious. Do not venture away after dark." She smiles briefly, catching the eyes of a few. "Go in groups if you can, and make sure to take a lantern if you're going in the caves."

Zak sighs at the announcement from the old leader-lady and looks out on the forest, nope, not going out there not for love nor money not that there's love or money in the woods. there's only wild animals and opportunities for getting lost he thought to himself as he snuggled in to his new patchwork wool and sheepskin coat, it matched the new boots in style if not in color and was quite nice and warm. he had even been given a pair of woolly socks, they were a sensible brown beneath his bare knees. and only stank a little more than the rest of him.

Zak's knees were always warm he didn't get long pants unless one was going through a burr patch and even then they were just uncomfortable. short pants and leg-hair were more then enough for this cold patch.

"Right" he said to Rana, "Let's go fix some dinner" Rana looked up and wagged her tail, dinner was a good word, it meant dinner!

they walked back to Rusting Canvas where the horses were watered, brushed, picked, blanketed, and grumpy but in a satisfied manner of those who work for a living and squash the unwary for fun.

Zak set out a thick and slightly mildewed red canvas tarp over the top of the wagon and out beyond by tiring it to trees, this would keep their campsite and their horses dry in the night.

he set up another one not quite overlapping so that smoke from the fire could escape and set about the business of cooking up some beans and cornbread.
