Went to my friend's house, and saw him playing Resonance of Fate... I actually think I might get that game before I get FF13.

Have you tried experimenting with different strategies? It might take more than just level grinding.

Well i got sick of buying a load of games that only last me a little while, so i decided to pick FF13 up. (And i had a 10 day "return if its crap" policy so i had nothing to lose)
I've so far clocked about 15 hours into the game (albeit some was reading the datalog and being AFK) and I'm still kinda undecided if i like the game or not.
(For the purpose of this review, ill be comparing it to final fantasy's 7, and my short experiences with 10 when it first came out)
First off, its like everything that is good about the game, also is annoying.
Gameplay - The game is ALOT more linear than any other final fantasy that Ive played. Which in some ways is a good thing (As i sometimes suffered with "what the ******** do i do now" syndrome) but in other ways, you want to have the freedom to just explore a bit, and through the first part of the game, there's practically none of that. Any towns seem to be just for design purposes and offer no real significance (Like the flashback with Snow in Bodhum) All shopping is done through save points, so it just feels like there's a lack of interaction with the rest of the world. There's also a distinct lack of "puzzle" elements to the game, everything is just a long corridor with a few item balls to open. Its a big difference from previous entries in the series.
The main bulk of the game-play is the combat, which again, has its ups and downs. The combat system uses a class system similar to the older final fantasy games but can be switched at any time with what's known as a paradigm shift. There is also a heavy reliance on chaining attacks to stagger opponents to cause massive damage. This makes the game a lot more about switching roles at the right moments for a balance of recovery and defence with medics and synergists, to offensive chaining with a commando and ravagers. Attacks and commands can be chained up before they are executed, with more actions adding to the spectacle of the attacks as you gain gages for the ATB.
Combat mechanics are introduced throughout the game piece by piece so as not to overcomplicate, and what i've described is only a pinch of the many mechanics you can use in the game.
Sound and music - Awesome.. Nuff said.
Story - This is where the most points should be scored for final fantasy 13, unfortunately it loses a few for the first 4 hours when you have absolutely no ******** idea what is going on. You do tend to figure it out after a little while, and the Datalog helps with this. Some characters have odd moments which ruin the believability of their personality, (I'm looking at you Vanille) But, in terms of wanting to find out what happens next, the story keeps you guessing and wanting to know. There are some.... suggestive.. moments between Sazh and Vanille, which playing the game you might notice.
Graphics - I have the ps3 version, which I've seen has sharper detail than the 360 port. But, overall the graphics are amazing, the cut scenes look spectacular, and the characters look more lifelike than ever before. There are a few instances where the terrain are noticeably flat textures, but overall, its stunning.
Overall, im still undecided as to if its a FF7 beater for me. Its alot simpler as to what you have to do, but so simple in the fact that its just a corridor with enemies in, alot of which you can just walk around. But, the combat and story are solid enough to keep me playing for this long so Squenix must have done something right.
7/10

i think most of what you said is fair. i do not agree with the 7 being better (if i understood what you said).
i think the battle system is broken. the closer you get to the end the better it gets. i wish you could move your chars around thats one thing i really dont like. and i dident like how for most of the game you cant use any class, or how you cant switch chars out that would of been really helpful like on ffx. *thinks* ooh and i like the ffx leveling/skill system. how you could move which way you wanted almost and learn whatever. but on this one you have to go one way on each class you dont get a choice. also wish you could give your others suggestion on what you want em to do on persona 3. good thing its alot better near the end. where you can do which class you want.
the story is confusing at first but alot better once you get past a certain point....
i dont mind that its linear.

13 Verses will have combat similar to Kingdom hearts.
(EDIT)
I have decided, that Final fantasy 7 and 13 are incomparable, they are 2 completely different games, and to compare them would be like comparing GTA with GTA4. Same franchise, completely different games.

I hope it's good though. I mean, KH was a half assed hack and slash attempt. I hope it's at least fun in Versus.
