I'm in tenth grade and at my school we're currently registering for our classes for next year. I'm in German IV this semester (we're on block scheduling, so I've taken German I-IV in just this year and last year). The school also has French and Spanish classes. Initially, I intended on taking another four "years" of a language - most likely French, because whichever one I didn't pick, I was going to study on my own and it's much easier to find Spanish language materials here.
However, the reason I begged to go to public school (I was formerly homeschooled) was that I wanted to use the school as a resource to learn about things I want, and committing myself to a language in-school takes away a lot of opportunities for other electives, in terms of the time it takes up in the schedule. I also have a lot of "required" classes to take, and I'm actually taking twice as many math classes as I need, but for good reason.
I'm trying to decide whether to sign up for French I and II next year, because I do intend on doing something relating to languages after high school, and also, to be honest, I just know it would be an easy A (or A+). On the other hand, since it's mostly a matter of personal interest, I can always study a language outside of school...and that would free up more space in my schedule for other things.
