Lien Si
Captain

Lien Si sat behind the counter at Muoh Li's pharmacy, his head propped up with one hand and a book in his other. Muoh Li and the young assistant had been called out for an emergency, something about kids licking things they shouldn't have. As such, Lien Si was left to watch over the pharmacy until the professionals return.

Next to him on the counter was a decorated glass platter upon which a pure white lotus floated. If one were to stare at it long enough, it almost seemed as if glowed, pulsating. Lien Si however, paid it no mind, even though he had been midly surprised when the blossom had fell out of his sleeve.

He flipped to the next page, idly transfering the names and uses of various herbs on the page to memory.

It wasn't to often that Jing Lin could be seen outside of his work space, often seeming as though he couldn't be bothered with anyone but those that he sold his wares to. It might be true but the man had seemed to cut him off from others when his wife passed away, an event that he hadn't seemed to have recovered from yet. Not that one could ever completely recover from losing what they would have referred to as their soul mate.

The sculptor would likely have never left home if it weren't for the fact that he had developed a bit of a cough. He chalked it up at first to all of the dust that he had to deal with working with the materials he used. It had worsened though into a bit of a cold so here he was, heading out to see if he could get some herbs to help clear it up. The sculptor was wearing his thick glasses today which allowed for his eyes to open wider then was normal for him, making it easier for him to see as well as masking what people often referred to as his 'fox eyes'.

There were some around the area he lived in that always looked at him strangely, whispering things behind his back. There were many who were convinced that the fact that he and his wife had never conceived wasn't because of her ailing health but because he was a fox spirit. Superstitious foolishness but it could be a bother regardless, there were some people that refused to do business with foxes even if his work was the best around. At least he hadn't lost out on so many customers that he wasn't able to take care of himself, in fact truth be told be made a good enough living.

Jing Lin lifted a hand to his mouth to smother a cough before stepping inside the pharmacy, he nodded his head politely to the one behind the counter before he set to looking for the needed herbs that he could mix in with his tea.

((Usually people go straight to the counter and ask for the ingredients they want, or they have a prescription. It's like going to ta deli now that I think about it, they order things by weight oO))

A sparrow may be small but it has all the vital organs.* So too was the pharmacy. It was of a decent size with rows and rows of shelves that reached towards the ceiling, each home to numerous wooden drawers, some big, some small. They were all meticulously labeled by the doctor's assistant, but unless you were very familiar with plants and herbs, the order of the drawers seemed... unordered.

"The doctor's not in," Lien Si said without looking up, his voice somehow carrying clearly over to Jing Lin despite how softly he had spoken. "And neither is his assistant." He flipped another page. The lotus beside him glowed warmly, not bothered by the cold air that had been let in moments earlier.

((*Chinese idiom, lulz.

Jing Lin turned his gaze toward the voice, finding that it was different then the one that belonged to the pharmacist. He lifted a hand to adjust his glasses, looking Lien Si over before he gave a smile as he approached the counter, "If I may ask, do you know when either or both are going to return?" He asked, wanting to buy his herbs but while he had an idea for what he wanted he didn't know the right amounts of each that he needed to mix into his tea.

As he got to the counter the man found himself looking down at the flower for a moment. He starred at it before he lifted his glasses, eyes squinting at the plant before he gave a smile, "A beautiful flower they got in, is it by chance special sort of healing herb?" He asked as he replaced his glasses on his nose. It looked like an interesting sort of plant, almost appeared as though it were alive and glowing despite not being in a pot.

"It's a flower of illusion." Lien Si answered, his eyes still on the pages of the book. He flipped to the next page. "A lotus made of dreams, hope, and memories. Though," he paused in the middle of the page, recalling the entry on lotuses he had read not too long ago, "Lotus leaves and seeds can in fact be used in medicines; it may be used to prevent and cure heat stroke, stop bleeding, and ease bruises." He looked up at Jing Lin for a brief moment then returned to his book, "It appears you have none of those ailments."

"Doctor Hu and his assistant were called out for an emergency, something about some kids licking something they shouldn't have." He added as an after thought.

A flower of illusion made up of dreams, hopes, and memories? That seemed... a little fishy to have in a shop made to sell plants that held healing properties he thought to himself before it was explained to him that it was in fact one of those sorts of plants, "Your correct, I don't require medicine of that sort." The flower might be pretty but it didn't have any curative properties that were useful to him.

"An emergency helping children? I see, I could come back later." He murmured, his cold wasn't so bad that he'd been debilitated by it in any way, more of an annoyance he'd hoped to n** in the bud then anything. He wondered how long it might take with helping their patients. Kids licking something that they shouldn't? Made him wondering what that might be, if it were something dangerous it might be some time before they came back, if it were something foolish like getting their tongues stuck to something that had been iced over it might be quicker.

"Or perhaps I will hang out a time, see if they return." He said, lifting a to smother another cough. He wouldn't admit it out loud since it was a strange fact but this was the longest he'd been out of the house in sometime and he was enjoying stretching his legs and getting a bit of air. Staying out for a moment longer wouldn't hurt, he was ahead on his work after all. As he found himself waiting his eyes drifted down to watch the lotus for a moment more, "So where did they pick up a Flower of Illusion?" He asked, referring to the doctor and his assistant.

Lien Si nodded, "There are chairs right over there you can sit on while you wait. ...oh, and I guess I should get tea..." Lien Si finally put down the volume of Bencao Gangmu he was reading and made his way out from behind the counter. He returned soon with a pot of tea and two cups on a tray, handing one cup to Jing Lin while he retreated back behind the counter with the other.

"hmm... This tea is supposed to warm and strengthen the body and protect it from the cold," he added, trying to recall how Muoh Li usually greeted his patients. He took a sip from his cup before answering about the lotus, "The doctor didn't pick up this flower, it had somehow got caught on my sleeve and I brought it here with me unknowingly."

"You have my thanks." He murmured, taking the cup of tea and used it to warm his hands before he took a sip from the cup. The warmth of the tea flooded him and the man looked quite content as he drank from his cup. It was a delightful taste he thought to himself, a smile touching his lips. This really was quite relaxing and had him almost glad he'd come down with a cold, almost.

"Hrm? The flower was caught on your sleeve and tagged along?" That seemed rather strange he thought to himself as he looked at it once more, that the flower would get here as though of its own will and without the stand in pharmacist noticing, "It still looks to be in good heath despite having been out in the cold, must be a hardy breed." His eyes were tracing over the details of the flower and he found himself memorizing it, the idea coming to mind of making a piece like it when he got home.

"Its design would make for a pretty hair ornament." He mused out loud.

"If it were a normal lotus, it would not be here, for lotuses are summer flora," Lien Si commented absentmindedly as he observed Jing Lin's interest, "Since this flower is but an illusion, the cold does nothing to it's appearance."

He could almost hear the gears turning in the artisan's head, and perhaps... Just perhaps.

"Would you take this one for reference?"

Perhaps he was the reason why the blossom had attached itself to his sleeve.

Jing Lin looked from the blossom to Lien Si and back again, "Could I?" He sounded almost hopeful over the idea, if it kept for some time longer then summer breed it would give him time to get the design sketched out so that he would be able to recreate it into jewelry or hair ornaments. He nodded, "How much?" He had to make sure that he would be able to make his money back on the purchase and since the flower sounded a little on the rare side given all of the properties it contained it might end up a bit to rich for his blood.

If so perhaps the man would let him fetch his materials so he could sketch this one out here while he waited for the Doctor? It was a secondary chance but not one that he found himself liking as much as taking this flower, after all it would be easier for him to work at him. Not to mention that he would be more at ease there as well.

Lien Si shook his head lightly and smiled, "If you can take it, it's yours to keep; for it was the work of fate that our paths crossed today." He paused, thinking for a moment before adding, "You can't take the platter though, I do believe it's one of Muoh Li-- Dr. Hu's favored collections."

He crossed his arms on the counter and brought his head down so that he was at eye level with the blossom. Extending one slender finger he gently poked one petal, sending the lotus gliding over the surface of the water, creating ripples where it went. Ah, yes, the young man was certain now. If Jing Lin were to take it, this lotus would belong to the artisan, and their destinies will become entwined.

If he did not, well then, that simply meant that while their paths crossed, that was all there was too it. A simple meeting, nothing more.

The man watched as Lien Si came to rest on the counter and gave the flower a little poke. The way that it floated across the water closer to him made Jing Lin feel as though he were offering it to him. He just had to take it, huh? Sounded almost to good to be true but he found himself reaching out to pick it up regardless, "Do I need to make this same sort of set up at home?" He asked, looking down at the dish of water that it had been floating in, "Will the flower bloom longer that way?"

If so he should likely be getting back quickly, before the chill in the air caused it to wither. For the moment it appeared as though the man had forgotten all about his cold in light of a new project to work on.

Seeing that Jing Lin had took up his offer, Lien Si settled back into his original position and picked up the book again, a gentle smile on his features. Tracing the characters on the cover, the man answered.

"Illusions such as these require not water, nor sun, nor dirt. Instead it feeds on wishes, hopes, and other wispy things, such as incense. As long as you have the 'thought,' this lotus will bloom for you for many years to come."

Lien Si then opened the book back to the exact page he was on earlier, and proceeded to list a number of herbal tea formulas for different types of cough and cold offhandedly.

Jing Lin starred at Lien Si for a long while, as though he were more then a little uncertain about the instructions that he was given by the one who'd given him with the flower. He finally gave a nod of his head, "Alright, I think I can do that." He said, attention going back to the flower, "I think that I will head back home, I can look for the Doctor again later." The urge to get to work was greater then the desire to wait here. It might not be the most healthy thing given he'd already put off coming here to pick up his herbs but it was just his way.

"I thank you for the gift, if you ever need anything made I will give you a discount." He said, giving a smile before he headed out. It had been some time since there was any other living thing in the shop with him, even if it were just a plant it would be nice to have something akin to companionship. He seemed to be in a better mood then was normal for Jing Lin as he headed back for home, not that him grinning happily while out on his walk helped any with the rumors already swirling about him.

Nothing worse then a grinning fox, it meant that he was up to something or so one woman whispered to one of her friends.
