My transition in coloring in PS to Sai; I think I'm a lot happier with my stuff when I work in the latter. Tried to keep this dark and moody. The dress is based off an existing dress and I also based this around my friend who has a penchant for the lolita pirate style. At the time she still had her orange hair so I went with that to have something bright and eye catching. As always, Kirby helped out with the final details since it's something I'm generally lazy at doing myself razz

Well, I picked a good time to pop in.

Lovely piece and nice way to fill out the composition.
How does Sai compare to PS anyways? I see a good number of people who use Sai, and it reminds me more of Corel Painter..

@ Giraffics: I've found Photoshop very inflexible when it comes to painterly styled art, so I have Painter 11.

Before painter I had SAI (and OC), which I melted with love all over because of the lovely brushes and effects. I hated the UI, however, so rarely used the program.

I wouldn't switch back to either from Painter. It's just so nice. *O*

@ Sporkii: I really love the direction you've gone with this piece. I saw it as a WIP and had no idea the outcome would be remotely similar to this. I love the Marie Antoinette reference witht he ship in the hair. C':

I personally am liking Sai a lot more than PS right now; the methods that I use in PS are the same in Sai but the way the latter handles it seem much more intuitive.

When I first started getting into digital art Kirby let me try out Painter thinking that it would be a good program for an illustrator but I ended up being frustrated with the program. It was too bloated and I felt overwhelmed with too many options and I didn't feel like I could just dive right in and get started.

I eventually switched to PS which was something I found really versatile in the work that I do. It's good for photos, layouts, drawing, painting, etc. I know how to get around easily and use the tools needed to get the job done.

We tried out Sai for me to use on our netbook since Photoshop CS4 is way too bloated for it to handle. It works pretty well and I can now sketch on the go whenever I feel like it. I actually like the UI in Sai since it's easy to customize your shortcut keys and it's pretty responsive and quick to load. I also like that Sai uses a lot of the same shortcuts like the ones I use in PS so the transition hasn't been difficult for me to do. I also like the canvas rotation tool in Sai over Photoshop; it seems that when I draw lines in a rotated canvas in PS they end up looking fuzzy even after rotating back to 0 degrees.

I think even though I'm gushing over Sai I don't think I'll ever be like 100% all Sai and never come back to Photoshop. When I'm working on stuff like adding a bunch of small things or having to line them up it's quicker for me to do in PS while Sai skimps on things like snapping or aligning.

i had the same feeling as you spork, painter had a lot of potential for me but it was overwhelming and i didn't even know where or how to start. i'm definitely willing to give it another try though, even though my Painter is just sitting in my hard drive unused for now.

other than photoshop for painting i used opencanvas a lot because i really like the smooth watercolor appeal that it makes.

a lot of people have been talking about sai... maybe i should get into it!!

I think you ought to give those a shot! If anything maybe we can all learn a thing or two about the different programs out there. Maybe I just had a bad first impression with Painter and I just need someone to show me the best way to use it biggrin

Maybe we can also start a thread on that? Our experiences and/or understanding with different programs? I think it'd be interesting to just see how other people work!

a thread would definitely help out. the last time i used painter, i used photoshop techniques on it, which was pretty stupid in the first place and confused me even more. hahahah.
