The sun had gone down hours ago. Some creatures were sleeping. Others were awake. One in particular was wide awake. Hidden from view there lay a dark colored egg, nestled in the branches of a bramble bush. If one looked carefully and long enough, they would see faintly glowing symbols on the surface of the egg. But most of those with any interest in the egg had been warded off by the thorns of the bush, so it just lay there, as it had since... the little creature inside didn't know when...
It was dark outside... she didn't know how she knew, she just did. Of course, it was always dark where she was, but somehow she felt there was more beyond her cramped prison. Sometimes she heard sounds or felt movement. But now, all was still. And it was dark... the way she liked it! But there wasn't a thing to do, except lay there, unsure if her head was pointed up or down, her feet and tail tucked up under her chin. For a long time she found it comforting and soothing. But more and more she was finding her predicament uneventful, dull... and rather lonesome.
Little Midna sighed, and shifted restlessly, trying to move into a more comfortable position, but of course couldn't. But she couldn't sleep either. Something would happen eventually, and she had to be awake when it did....

User ImageKhafra padded silently through the forest, basking in the silverly light cast by the moon. He thrived in the night, slinking in between shadows and passing oblivious creatures so silently that they never knew he was there.

Presently he was on a hunt. He'd not eaten in a couple days and was searching patiently for the nighttime haven of an unsuspecting rabbit or other such woodland animal. He'd prefer fish, but couldn't be bothered to catch one lately...

Khafra's keen vision suddenly picked up a flash of the moons light on a dark but shiny surface, and as he turned his head in the direction it came from he noticed an object in the brambles that seemed to be glowing in the light of the moon.

"What in the world?" he wondered to himself as he slowly approached the object.

Midna perked up. She thought she'd heard something. More than that though, she thought she could sense someone looking at her; after being alone and ignored for so long, it felt different somehow to be paid attention to. Now, having never witnessed the outside world, Midna didn't know that it could be dangerous, especially to a newborn dragonling; all she knew is that whatever was beyond her sticky, damp encasement, she wanted to see it... especially if there was someone else out there!
Midna wriggled, but didn't feel like it did any good. She wriggled some more, but to no avail. She gave a small peep of frustration, and startled herself. She didn't know she could make that noise. She tried it again, and was delighted at the short, high-pitched chirp that escaped her mouth. She chirped again, this time more loudly, hoping to make someone hear her, and wriggled once more for good measure. She couldn't really tell, but from the outside, her egg began to rock ever so slightly, back and forth.

Khafra watched the strange rock apprehensively, wondering what it would do next. The thing was rocking gently from side to side and making strange noises...definitely not normal rock behavior.

He slowly crept up to it and poked it with one claw. It unfortunately was while the rock was rocking away from him, thus he pushed it over and it began to roll a bit.

"Oops..." he muttered as he watched the rock, or rather what he was beginning to suspect was an egg.

Midna's egg rolled over once or twice and then tumbled out of the bramble bush where it had been hidden. Midna was startled at being jostled about, and when she finally came to rest, she was disorientated. She let out a small whimper of distress and then pecked at the egg's inner wall in frustration. This time, it did something it hadn't before: it cracked. Midna forgot her discomfort almost immediately. She pecked again, the small egg-tooth at the tip of her nose chipping nicely at the shell. She pecked once again, this time more enthusiastically, and she finally managed to make a small hole in the shell.
A rush of new sensations overwhelmed the baby dragon. Though it was dark outside, compared with the inside of her egg she'd gotten so used to it was so bright she had to shut her eyes. Sounds that were once muffled came into clear focus: the chirping of crickets, the rustling of leaves, and other sounds. The air smelled fresh and sweet... and then she smelled something else that caught her attention. With her shell cracked, she thought she could smell another creature very nearby. She opened her eyes again, but couldn't see it from where she was. She began to peep again, beckoning whoever it was to come closer.

Khafra watched, fascinated as slowly the odd rock cracked open to reveal a squirming little dragon inside. He stayed where he was, waiting to see what the new born would do. His instinct as a griffin was to protect the young, but he didn't know if he would scare it or not.

When the little one began to look for someone, he was moving forward almost without realizing it. Slowly he drew closer until he was right in front of the squinting dragon, crouching at eye-level for the little one.

"Welcome to the world..." he whispered.

Midna's eyes widened and she blinked in fascination as her vision was filled with Khafra's large head. Obviously, he was the first living creature she'd ever seen... she wasn't even sure if she was looking at him the right way, so she tilted her head one way, then the other, considering him.
For some reason, she liked him. She wanted to reach out and touch him! But then she realized she was still stuck inside her shell. Midna struggled, pushing with her back legs. She pushed and pushed, eyes squeezed shut with effort... and then relaxed to take a small gasp of breath. A crack that ran along the length of her shell was slowly widening.
Midna gave a little kick which caused her to roll slightly closer to Khafra. Her tiny nose bumped up against Khafra's beak, and she stopped struggling for a moment to look into his eye and sniff at the feathers that covered his face.
