Xbox Live has two memberships types: Silver and Gold. Silver is free and already comes with the Xbox console. You get basic stuff like demos, trailers, game add ons, xbox related news, and little things like that. The Gold membership, on the other hand, has all the online goodies. You need it to play online multiplayer, get demos earlier, watch movies and shows on Netflix, buy the decent game dlc, and all that jazz.
The Gold membership costs a certain amount depending on how long you want to have it. At the stores you can buy three month Gold membership cards for around 20 bucks, and year long Gold membership cards for 50 bucks. You can buy your membership online as well as at Xbox.com. On there you can buy one month membership for eight bucks a month.
As for getting gold membership without spending any money, I can't help you much there. You can try looking for a site where you take surveys and get points towards the purchase of a gold membership, but I personally don't trust those things. Also, some Xbox 360 games that place emphasis on their multiplayer come with 48 hours or even 1 month membership cards in the case so you can activate it along with your game (Halo 3, Crackdown, GTA 4, Gears of War, etc.)
I hope this helps. Good luck getting Gold.

Gibby is Exacly right just make your xbox live account you'll pretty much get a month of gold for free for being a new member then after that once your months over you go to silver go to the store by a xbox gold car redeem it and there go play online again
