and for those against smoking it - what about drinking it in tea? or eating it in butter? and what about merely growing the plants for other reasons - hemp seed, oil, rope, clothing, paper - need i go on?
it used to be THE largest crop for a reason...

The rose in spring blu217 hey if it grows out of the ground it should be legal right? What if it's opium? Weed is not addictive, it should never be classified similarly to an addictive drug. Opium based products (opiates) are highly addictive and cause horrible physical withdrawals that usually require rehab/hospitalization or extensive care from a loved one for several days until the person is strong enough on their own. Think of the worst flu you have ever had and double/triple/quadrupole the feeling. Opiates are pain killers and when abused (people take over-doses to get a really comfy feeling) they replace your body's ability to naturally create and release endorphins. Although most opiates require a prescription, they are abused and purchased from people like cancer patients who would rather have the money than the pill. $2, $4, $6, $10, $12 for ONE pill in central California. Junkie's in Louisiana will pay up to $30, $40, $50 dollars for ONE PILL. There are a huge variety of opiate pills from Vicoden to Oxycontin and many more. Some companies are now producing pills that can not be chewed to have the time release function break so they can get high, and they are adding plastics to the pills to do this, making the only way to break the time release, to melt the pill and inject the extract. Opiate addiction is spreading fast and is a very expensive habit. The withdrawals keep the addicts coming back for more and few junkies have the will power to quit and never go back, and even fewer can afford rehab or have a person who is willing to take care of them for a few days.

I'm only against smoking it on grounds that smoking anything damages your lungs. If you want to take that risk then go ahead; it's just not for me. Same with any other method of ingestion. I'm pretty sure that marijuana and hemp are different, even if they are related. I think that we should be growing hemp on a large scale because of how useful and versatile it is. From a personal standpoint, I'm not a fan of marijuana use because I've seen what it does to people. People use it as an escape, just like people will use anything as an escape, and it just draws them deeper into a hole that they never get out of and they most often drag others down with them. Marijuana may not be addictive, but escapism is. I like to escape every once in a while with a video game or a drink, but I know when to quit. Some people just don't. This applies to anything though, not just marijuana. I'm just personally biased because of life experience.

But people have many vices and many crutches. Who are we to judge others'

But people have many vices and many crutches. Who are we to judge others' It only becomes an issue when your vice forces you to steal from me. Then I think I have every right to judge. Or when your vice causes you to kill someone. (Note that I'm being rhetorical; I'm not talking about you specifically.) We should control our vices, not let them control us. This is where people run into trouble with anything, not just drugs or alcohol.
