Okay, a few days ago, one of my good friends brought up a good question, is it worth it to learn a brass instrument in order to join DCI if you are a wood wind instrumentalist? well, what im curious is, has anybody actually done something like that before? or is there no hope and we (woodwinds) should all just give up on any hope of ever doing so?] Yes I'm aware of the stupidity of my question.

I was just thinking about this myself. I'm hoping to audition for Blue Devils in 2011, and it'd be my last chance as I'd be too old after that. ^^;

So I want to learn trumpet or trombone this year, but I don't know if I'd be good enough. I'd also be interested in hearing about anyone who's done that before. What about going from woodwind to percussion?

(Somewhat related question: What about people who have not marched corps style before? I'm in a high step band so I'd have to learn that stuff too...sigh)

Good luck! biggrin

I might try to do percussion too, I dunno which instrument it'd be easier to get my hands on.

There are no trombones in corps. Silly woodwinds. ^.^
I've heard somewhere that mellophone is much easier for woodwind players. Something about the fingerings being similar... not sure though.

Really, I could have sworn I saw trombone on the list...oh well.

Mello would be cool too, but I dunno if it'd be any easier. Aren't all brass fingerings basically the same?

I know two woodwinds from my college (and high school, too. lol. local community college. =P) that recently auditioned for DCI bands on baritone. Both of them made it.

It would actually take more work for me to march a woodwind seeing as bassoon doesn't march and I marched trumpet in high school. Still I have no real want to do DCI for various reasons.

Were they bassoonists by any chance? (lol)
