There's a reason purple is seen as a noble color even nowadays.
Have you ever seen a movie about the bible? Did you ever notice all their robes are tan, or brown, or black, or any other earth tones? That's because that's about all the choice of color they had. Then came along a little country called Phoenicia. Phoenicia had no precious metals, no forests, no resources at all except for these really tasty clams that would turn your mouth purple if you ate too many. Then some bright Phoenician started straining the clams to create purple dye, and the color immediately caught on. The thing is, since it took about 1000 clams to make an ounce of dye, only royalty could afford it. Eventually it became illegal in some places to wear purple unless you were nobillity!
