Okay then guys. As I promised earlier, I'm posting a thread telling you to read Galatians.

www.biblegateway.com if you don't have your own Bible.

And discuss it now. I'm a little pressed for time right now, so if anyone else could start the discussion? Just bring up anything you didn't understand / anything that struck you from it.

I always learn more from Scripture every time I read it... And since I've been reading the NASB, I've been getting a lot more out of it than I did with the KJV, heh.

There were a few things that really tugged at me:

Quote:
Gal 1:8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed!
Gal 1:9 As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!

The beginning of Galatians is a chastisement from Paul over the way the Greeks have begun to do their own thing instead of following what Paul preached to them. These verses are very important pieces of Scripture as they severely condemn heretical gospels and are still relevant today when dealing with Gnostics, New Agers, Mormons, Muslims, et al. A very handy passage to keep in your mind.

Quote:
Gal 2:14 But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in the presence of all, "If you, being a Jew, live like the Gentiles and not like the Jews, how is it that you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?

I think this speaks wonders about how modern Churchianity has become worldly to try to bring in unsaved souls to try to convert. If we lower ourselves to the heathens, there's no reason to believe that the heathens will suddenly repent just because you're just a really cool person.

Quote:
Gal 3:5 So then, does He who provides you with the Spirit and works miracles among you, do it by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith?
Gal 3:6 Even so Abraham BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS RECKONED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.
[sic]
Quote:
Gal 2:20 "I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.
Gal 2:21 "I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly."

Chalk two more up for Sola Fide.

Quote:
Gal 5:9 A little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough.

In other words, a little bit of corruption leads to a whole lot of it. We shouldn't think "oh I can just sin a little bit" and expect not to become completely entrapped by our lusts. It's just not possible, and it's also far from being something a person filled with the Spirit would want to do.

Quote:
Gal 5:19 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality,
Gal 5:20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions,
Gal 5:21 envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
Gal 5:23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Gal 5:24 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
Gal 5:25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.

Might want to write this down on paper a few times to get this stuck in your head, because this is important. I know I still have to live up to this. Self-control's a big one on this list, especially considering a lot of us in the guild are in our teens and angst is an issue we have to deal with.

I'm likin' this Bible Study thing. We haven't had a big theological/Biblical discussion in a while.

M'kay. Here's my two cents (or pence, or whatever) on it. I'll do the first two or three chapters, 'cause I really ought to be revising now, but if I don't do this first, I'll never do it. =)

Galatians 1:10
10Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.

This kinda made me think. A lot of the time, when I get opportunities to tell people about God, I just... won't, because I'm scared of what people will think of me. Which is pretty dumb on so many levels, because I argue Creationism in Biology class, but for some reason I won't evangelise. :/

Galatians 2:15-16
15"We who are Jews by birth and not 'Gentile sinners' 16know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified.

This passage is just such a relief. It's awesome; we're not justified by anything we do. We're justified by Jesus, and no mistakes we can make can do anything about that.
