Trust me I've searched for this but have yet to find a decent source.

I read a few times of an account of a man ages ago with an understanding of astronomy to a decent extent for his time that predicted an eclipse, solar or lunar i cannot recall right now, and the rest of the people were wowed by the phenomena, as he raised his hand and the eclipse passed.

If anyone can point me in the right direction as far as a legit source, and perhaps even multiple, where I'd be informed of the man, place, and era, you'd have my perpetual gratitude and respect for lending a helping hand in my endeavors.

Posted too soon, fond it in Victor J Stengers "God the Failed Hypothesis"

"In probably the first known case of a scientific prediction, Thales of Miletus had predicted the eclipse based on Babylonian records."

Wow, this is interesting. Do you know of any other instances?

Instances where man has been able to trick masses with science?

Or solely going on eclipses?

Instances of eclipses being used for mass control/awe inspiring.

Ah. Well then yes, eclipses have been the center of shock and awe for awhile in history.

Mostly before common era, there had been prayers and sacrifices to appease it's coming, and other rituals of sorts.

One of the earliest recorded dates was in Ancient China, where there were two men Hi and Ho that were suppose to kill the dragon as was thought to be passing over it with arrows, but were unprepared so were beheaded.

The passing of one was considered an ominous event, naturally as our understanding of science was rather inchoate. Particularly entailing a negative connotation were solar eclipses as the sun is often equated to life. So it's blocking out of sun rays is equivalent to death, with writhering crops and such.

thats the reason why pagans celebrate the winter solstice so much, because it is extra day when it is needed most, so obviously it is a gift from the gods

Yes indeed, I enjoy those myself - a good nights rest is one of my simplest pleasures in life.

Pharohs used to "cause" the Niles flood.. every year he would raise his hand...
That's slightly more predictable than an eclipse, however.

Not if you have access to acurate astronomy.

And that would depend on the time period we're talking about. People will notice and be able to predict the change of the seasons and regular floods regardless of time period, knowledge of the day or equipment.
