So, here is the plot as I have it writen now:

In a seaside cabin in the south of France, a group of six teens have been brought together to celebrate the arts, they are talented in a variety of ways and all have different creative gifts. They will be there for a month and a half ((15th of July to 31st of August)) in which time they will have to create a small collection of work in their favoured category, and at the end, display or perform it in an event chosen by all.

There is a small task force of organizers who will be at the resort for the month and a half, they will be able to help out your characters with almost all jobs, but they can not do their work for them.

It is a bit basic as it stands now, so I am hoping for some idea on twists I could add in or some other way to make it less plain.

I have also come up with an profile idea that might target the problem most roleplays encounter of characters falling in love too quickly but I need to know what other people think of it. This is it:

Instead of a profile thread or post, each person would have their own thread which no one else is allowed to visit. In it will be their Character Profile which the can update at any point and there would also be all the information they had found out about other charcters. This way they will really have to get to know the characters and live them and not know more than their character knows about the other people, it will (hopefully) make it a more realistic experiance.

((Please do not steal this profile idea! It took me ages to come up with!! Also, I have not made many roleplays before, and I have never asked for advice on one, I don't know how these things are normally set out, so please be nice to me.))

Before I say anything, know this: I did not read a single word of your post. This is a very specific criticism and has nothing to do with your plot.

The title is VERY hard to read, and although I made it out, I know that such a hyped-up roleplay would be very likely to push me away. Yes, it looks pretty, but that doesn't make it better in any way. A little spiffying can be great, but abusing symbols in this manner pushes away a lot of people (ie, myself and others whom have directly made such statements in my presence).

Just give us the title and let the plot speak for itself. Let the story draw us in, not pretty symbols.

Don't get me wrong, they are certainly eye-catching, but it irritates me when I have to pause and figure out what this or that symbol is supposed to represent. It's not just you, I can assure you.

Much more legible.

Though, the perfect RP title is one that can draw in players without needing to use gimmicky special characters.

This is what I was trying to say. If the symbols have no weight with the title or story, what's the point. Take for instance the club & ace...
Why? Is "Once Upon an Ocean Dream" about card-sharks on the high seas? If not, why put card suit symbols in the title? It all seems so irrelevant, and as Kai put it, gimmicky.

Ok, so no spade or club, but do you have any idea of what I could use that isn't a heart or music note? ((Both are cliché and I don't want to use a cliché symbol))

I would have to say no symbols at all would be best. Your title alone is pretty catchy, and I would have at the very least clicked it to see what it was (something I don't often do).

Reading over your profile thing, The only problems I can find are the fact that this is the internet and people can find ways around just about anything, so someone probably will cheat and go look up everyone else's profile

Also, a Profile is good for stating obvious things about a person that are probably not introduced in the RP (Appearance, perhaps some personality, little details that character B would notice but the player of Character A never actually writes down in the RP)

As for your RP idea itself, what are the main interactions everyone is going to be doing, if all the characters are off doing their own thing?

I'm with Kai: No symbols is best. It works fine without them.

Having read your idea now, I'd like to add the following critiques:
-Try to create a more GM-driven plot. As it stands, all drama and engagement must be player-created, and those RPs tend to die quickly.
-Try to think up those twists quickly, and this will probably work out well.
-Instead of their own threads, I recommend something similar to Kai's suggestion. Have them send you a profile so that YOU know an idea of what their character should be, and you can hold onto them so that it can be referenced. Then simply post the roster with the physical description of the characters. That way everyone can look back if they ever need to.
-Try to have more influence as GM. Create drama, add twists at a regular pace, and generally spice things up with your "god powers" otherwise this will probably turn out very flat.

Ok, I'll not add any symbols ((I'll leave that to my own posts, thankyou for helping me with that!!!)) I came up with a style that works withought symbols but is easy to read, is it good?

Ѳn¢e υpσn ãn Ѳceãn Ðreãm

Interaction between characters will be easier than you think, there will be a timetable ((probably should have mentioned this earlier)) which tells you, loosely, what hours you will be working on your chosen projects and things. There are 2 and a half rooms to work in, one for quiet things like painting and writing etc, a larger room for dancing, acting and music, and a mini sound room for recording music.
Also, the skills will be connected and intertwined with each other according to what event they chose to hold. For example, if they pick a musical, people will have to keep checking if the scenery is going ok, or if the dance fits the script, and the music and the dance will have to fit too and the dance has to be taught to anyone who acts but doesn't dance often etc. It all depends on what event is chosen.

Twists will probably end up being problems with staging, a shorter deadline than expected or one of the taskforce getting bad news and having to drop out. I'm hopping not to have to make a stupidly over the top thing though, because if it gets that far it will be because of good rprs, not half hearted ones who can't work with what they have.

I think I need to go more into the 'profile thing'.

I will not be doing a big 'look at these threads and you die' thing, I will tell people that they shouldn't because I want to see if it works and it will be something new for them to try. I will tell them that, yes, there is no way I can know if they do look at other people's profiles, but that if they do it's them who misses out on the surprise and realistic experience, not me. If they don't want to follow my rules, I don't think I really want to rp with them anyway. (( I would actually find it easy enough to work out if someone had cheated though....so I would catch them....but the psychology is wrong if I tell them that, it would make me into a system to cheat. It will be the walk of shame this way))

The task force will shake things up a bit. I will control them most of the time, so I will have ultimate power, maw haw haw, maw haw haw!! ((Ok, I'm going to stop the evil laugh, it doesn't suit me!!)) I'm not really a power maniac, but anyone who tries to take over everything and send it in a direction I don't like... twisted

Just Before An Eclipse

PostPosted: Thu Mar 04, 2010 7:57 pm

This small collection of art that the group has to make, is it a collaborative effort? Or does each person have to create their own piece depending on their favorite medium?

To make it more interesting for the characters, you do need some sort of conflict, which I suppose less time and someone having to leave might work but I was thinking of something like making one of their pieces (if they each create their own collection of art) based on someone else's medium. So they had to teach another, and then create something in it. Just an idea....

As for the 'profile thing' you created, I understand and like the idea of getting to know the characters like you would have to in real life. But I think it would work better if you had them PM it to you like Kai and Blackbird said. But maybe if people are interested in like appearance and basic things like that, which people can see right off hand, you can have a simplified profile actually in your thread. Don't really know if that'd help or not.
