What is it? I've always heard so much about it and have seen it mentioned a few times here in this guild. I kind of know the basics. Water weight is when your body holds on to water because of some kind of survival instinct, so you weigh more. But, how much weight can it really add? How do you get rid of it? If you drink too much water, can you also get water weight? Does having water weight affect your health overall, like if you get it a lot will your body suffer even if you get rid of it every time? Does exercising make you get more or less water weight?

I went to a nutritionist and they told me to multiply your weight by 1.5% (.015), and that's how much your weight varies, up or down, due to variant amounts of water. You can't really get rid of it, its sorta supposed to be there, y'know? But to get the most accurate reading of your weight, you should weigh yourself without any clothes on, first thing in the morning, before you eat or drink anything.

Ceres, to make sure we're all on common ground, this only applies if you have a scale in your bathroom.

And really any kind of weighing yourself will work as long as it's at around the same time each time you do it and under roughly the same conditions.

For example. If you weigh yourself when you first wake up nekkid and after going to the bathroom you're going to be much lighter than any other time of day. Imagine hopping on the scale the next evening and thinking you've gained five pounds through food or water or just 'day'.

Or if you weigh yourself at the gym with your gym outfit on and shoes off every time you're there it shouldn't be too much of a difference.

The important thing is consistency. Where you think your weight is in those two scenarios is a little different. For example I might be 176 at home in the morning, and 179 at the gym. But if I'm consistent with both measurements I'll still see the same amount go down as I'm losing weight.

When it comes to water weight. Imagine eating a bag of chips and some Chinese food. The next morning you might hop on the scale and freak out because you think you've gained X amount of lbs. Chances are most of it is water weight and you'll lose it throughout the week.

Sodium, salt, makes us retain water. I don't remember the biology of it, however it's true. And our diets have more sodium in them than they should anyway, so when we do things like eat mr. noodles or other such things it is quite shocking to our systems.

It's important to look at your weight over time. As long as it's going down and not up over each month you're good! This is a really cool site, check it out. Here's mine. : P

Normally though, your body regulates your water. If you drink more water one day, your kidneys will just say, make more pee, and you'll go to the bathroom more, and your body will be pretty much the same.

If you don't drink enough then your water will hold on to the water and you will pee less. So drinking lots of water should not affect your weight.

Yeah, too much salt leads to water retention. Cut down on salt in your diet, because salt makes your body hold on to more than is necessary.

Your period, certain medications and some illnesses will cause you to retain water too.

This is my question about water weight, does it make a visible difference? Because I know that my weight loss journey is more about how I fit into my clothes, not the numbers on the scale.
I've always been curious. I think that when you're retaining water weight you look more bloated, and thus bigger, am I right?

Yes. When I was pregnant I retained a ton of water (common in the late part of pregnancies), and it swelled up my ankles and feet a ton. I had to wear flip flops because my regular shoes didn't fit. If it is water bloating up the tissues, it will have more of a swollen look, and less jiggly than of fat, and less sinewy than of regular muscles.

Muscle repair, such as after an intense workout, will also make you retain water, so an uptick on the scale the next morning is probably from that.
