Tutorials have been requested for a long time (even before the Guild) now finally I can show you more or less a guide into how I do things. I'm not good at explaining things much less at teaching so I hope you try to figure out some stuff on your own. After all it is just a guide. You'll need a software to view the tutorials.

Deleter's CG Illustrator
http://www.akadotretail.com/shop/shop_showbook.php?id=SE-CGIL2W&client=deleter

or Open Canvas
http://www.portalgraphics.net/en/index.asp

I use a tablet to do my drawings and while I encourage people that are serious in getting into drawing to get one it is not necesary as long as you at least have pencil and paper ^^.

FIGURE DRAWING

I decided it was best to start doing the shape of the whole body. Basically the steps are as follow
  1. Draw a skeleton pose to use as a base for proportions and placement.
  2. Define the shape of the head keeping in mind the gender of the character
  3. Check if the marks you put earlier match the joints you are drawing, if not correct them
  4. put some lines to see where the eyes, nose and mouth should be

I used the same base for both the male and female bases. Compare to see the main differences.
Hint: hips and head shape are the biggest differences.

FACE, HAIRSTYLE & AGE

The character heads determine not only the body's proportion but also the characters age. In these examples you can see how hairstyle changes the type of character as well as it's age and how you draw the eyes lips and chin also changes the character age.

Here's what I usually do:
  1. Draw the shape of the head (more round for females)
  2. Draw the shape of the eyes and mouth
  3. Think about the character, is he a hippie or what. How old should he look
  4. Draw the facial hair to make him look older.
  5. Thick eyebrows for males gives them strong characteristics.
  6. For females think of the sexiness (longer shaped eyes and drawn lips gives a level of maturity.
  7. Round shaped eyes for females as well as a single line for the mouth gives a younger look. Add a round chin and you get a girl around 10-12
  8. The eyebrows thickness help define the type of character as well. Thick eyebrows usually means more innocent.

I used the same base for both the male and female bases. Compare to see the main differences.
Hint: hips and head shape are the biggest differences.

Something that I always forget to ask:

you use OpenCanvas/Deleter CG Illustrator for lineart/sketching etc., right? Then, do you use same or different programms for coloring?

I do everything but editing in CG illustrator. I use Photoshop for editing 'cause creating masks, resizing, indexing and all the filters 'nuff said Photoshop is the best. Sometimes I do everything in photoshop for example if I want a drawing cel shaded then why use CG illust to change later to PS when I could use paths and masks from the start. There's one thing in CG illust that I hate. Basically I can't copy (or don't know how) just an object from a layer. When you click copy layer or select the desired object and copy it as you paste it you paste everything in the layer (pain in the a**)
Also they can't be freely resized so unless I know exactly what I'll draw I usually make the sketch in PS first then switch to CG 'cause it gives me a more traditional feeling. You can even move your paper around ^^.

I hope there's a new version soon with those problems corrected. Anyway I might be able to send a full color pic animated thing if you want. PM the mail account to send it to if you want it.

I see. (And Photoshop is indeed the best thing for editing and such. ^^ )
What troubles me most about OpenCanvas/CG Illustrator is the way the color flows and mixes. So it would be interesting to see how and where you start aplying color and what you kep in mind while doing so, in order to color properly. ^^; I guess, it is not so different from Painter's watercolor tools, but I still have troubles getting along with OC/CGI software.
