There a most likley typos and many other things that need to be fixed. Read if you want...tell me what you think... -_-" don't tell me what I need to correct....
I tap my pencil on my desk; waiting for the bell to ring to let us all out for the weekend. I stare back and forth at the clock and the blank piece of paper on my desk. “Kirsty, stop with the pencil already.” Lucas my best-friend; he’s got to be nicest guy I know. Also the only guy I know that won’t touch my butt when I walk down the hall. He’s five foot eleven and he’s still growing. Short brown hair, and the normal blue eyes. In his words they are not like the movie star blue but close to it. “I can’t help it I’m ready to go.” “If you have to pea that bad then why don’t you just get up and...” “I don’t have to pea Lucas!” “Is there a problem Kirsty?” “No Mr. Duncan.” I can see Lucas holding in a laugh. I’m going to get him for this; I swear if he gets me in trouble again I’m going to kill him. “Maybe I’ll have to hold you after class.” “That won’t be needed.” “Then keep quite from now until the bell rings. I’ll be watching.” “Yes sir.” He walks back to the front of the room and sits in his desk. I turn to Lucas holding in a laugh still. I step on his foot as hard as possible; he screams out. “Lucas!” “Sorry.” “That’s it you and Kirsty stay after class.” “For how long?” “You’ll know when I let you go.” The bell rings; everyone gets up except Lucas and me. This is a typical Friday afternoon for the both of us; same class, same teacher, and same Lucas always getting both of us in trouble. “How many Friday’s in a row has it been?” Lucas walks up to the front of the classroom and takes seat on top of the desk; not in, on. I remain in the back. “I think it’s the fourth; I lost count.” “Get off of my desk Lucas.” “Yes sir.” “How a boy your age acts like twelve year old I don’t know.” “I’m only seventeen.” “Go sit down Lucas.” He bows and walks back to where I am. The teacher gives him a grim look; just what Lucas was aiming for. “He needs to get laid.” “Shut up Lucas. You’re the reason why we’re in here in the first place.” Lucas’s cell phone goes off. Mr. Duncan rolls his eyes and points us to the door; which means it’s time to go. I pick up my backpack and toss it across my shoulders. I’m so happy we don’t ride a bus; if we did every Friday we’d be left. “Who called you?” “Hold on.” Lucas has his phone to his ear; he has a really worried expression on his face. Most likely a call from home. Lucas makes great grades, he’s a nice person, but his home life is hell. His mom and dad have been fighting more and more lately. Lucas said there last fight was about the C he brought home on a Science test. Lucas hangs up his phone; he stops walking. “Lucas, who was on the phone?” “Home...” “What it your mom or dad?” Lucas runs towards the direction of his house. I want to follow but I need to get home and I don’t want to get involved; Lucas doesn’t like me to get into his family problems. Everything should be ok by tomorrow; everything usually is. I walk inside of the house and toss my back pack in the corner next to the closet. “Mom?” I walk in the kitchen; there is a note attached to the fridge. I snatch it off and quickly skim through it. It’s the usual. Dear Kirsty, I won’t be home blah blah blah, gone to casino with grandma for the weekend blah blah blah, be back Sunday night; food in the fridge, money to last you if you don’t want the food in fridge blah blah blah. I ball the note up and throw it in the trash; I open up the fridge and take out a bottle of water then make my way down the hall to my room. Lucas should be calling me soon; his parents argue for about thirty minutes; he tries to break it up for about forty. So every Friday he calls me around 4:20; and right now it’s 4:00, I have twenty minutes. I sit down on my bed and flip through my tv; nothing to watch as usual. It seem as if tv is out to melt your brain nowadays. I hop up and get on my computer. I’ll check my e-mail then it’ll be time for Lucas to call. I get online; I have no messages, I checked it at school today. My phone rings. I jump up from my chair and answer it. “Hey Lucas.” “Lucas?” “Oh, sorry Beth.” “You were waiting for Lucas to call?” “Yeah, he always calls me.” “Aw; how cute your boyfriend calls you.” “He’s not my boyfriend Beth.” “Everyone at school knows you’re dating. I just wish you two would admit to it.” “We aren’t dating! Can’t a guy and a girl just be good friends? We’ve known each other since we were little kids.” “Yeah, I know but usually when a guy and a girl have been friends for a long time they end up dating.” “What are you the birds and the bees expert now?” “When a man loves a woman...” “Shut up!” She laughs. Leave it to Beth to laugh at her own jokes; as usual. I guess I can truly classify her has my other best friend; well my female best friend. I guess she does have a point; but I only care for Lucas in a friend way. “I can’t wait for the day that you two get married and have little Lucas Jr.” “Beth I’m warning you; make one more joke and I’ll hang up and not answer when you call back.” “Kirsty and Lucas sitting in a tree k-i-s-s-i-n-g.” I hang up the phone; knowing Beth she’s laughing so hard right now she can’t even breathe. It’s past the time for Lucas to call. I hope everything is ok; it’s not like I can go to school tomorrow and see him. That’s the bad part about the weekend. The phone rings; this time I don’t shout out ‘hey Lucas’. “Hello.” “When did you start getting so formal when I call?” “Hey Lucas. How bad was it when you got home?” There is a very long pause. I can’t even hear Lucas breathe through the phone. It couldn’t have been that bad, could it? “Lucas?” “They’re getting a divorce.” Lucas voice cracks at the word. I can hear him sniff a few times; he’s crying. “What?” “My mom and dad are...” “Why?” “They are just sick of the fighting and...I don’t know. They just are.” “Lucas I’m so sorry.” “Yeah, whatever.” “What’s going to happen?” “Well, my dad is moving and he’s letting me stay with my mom. I’ll go and visit him when I’m out of school.” “Lucas...” “I just don’t know how we’re going to survive; my dad provided most of the money for us. Now that he’s leaving us; it’s going to get hard.” “I’ll help.” “No, I don’t want you involved. Just don’t expect to see me around much anymore.” “Why?” “I’m going to get a job.” “Where?” “I don’t know Kirsty! Stop asking me so many questions ok, I just don’t know!” He hangs up. I hit the off button on my phone and lay back in my bed. Lucas; there has to be some way to help him. I walk to my closet and pick out a black shirt with a peace sign on it; I change shirts. I grab my house keys and my cell phone; I lock the door and begin my way down the street to Lucas’s house. Maybe it’ll be better if we talk face to face. When I get to his house the front door is wide open and Lucas’s dad is putting things in the back of the trunk of his car. I walk inside without knocking or saying anything. “So, you’re just going to leave me and your son just like that Robert!” I run up the stairs so they don’t see me; the last thing they need to know is that I’m in there house. “How did you get in here?” I turn around to see Lucas; his eyes are red from crying, and his arm is bleeding. There are three perfect cuts along his arm. I don’t think his mom or dad would hurt him. “Lucas what happened to your arm?” “Don’t change the subject!” “I just walked in through the front door. Now answer my question.” “Get out.” “What?” “I said get out.” “Lucas I want to help.” “Kirsty get the hell out of my house!” A knife falls out of his front pocket; it’s covered in blood, his blood. I stare at him, my eyes almost watering. “Lucas...” He picks it up; and turns his back to me. He walks towards his room; I follow. When he gets to his room he closes and locks the door behind him. I knock softly. “Lucas please; we can go for a walk. We can talk about this.” “Go home Kirsty. Try not to let them see you.” “Lucas, please. You cut yourself and that’s not a good thing. I don’t want you to end up dead Lucas; you’re my best friend.” “I won’t die. Now go home.” “Lucas, please let me in.” He opens the door; and pushes me backwards. I stumble back a little; blood is dripping from his arm still. “Go home!” He slams the door. I sigh then make my way down the stairs; trying not to be seen by his parents. “Lucy I can’t take this anymore!” “Just leave Robert! Leave!” “I am!” I run past them; I don’t think they saw me. Just to make sure I don’t stop running until I’m home on my porch. I sit down on the top step and put my head into my knees. Lucas. Tears stream down my face; before I know it the sun has already set and it’s starting to get darker. I wipe the remaining tears away from my eyes and stand up. I walk to the front door and unlock it. “Kirsty...” I turn around to see Lucas wearing a different shirt; and his arm wrapped in more than one bandage. How deep did he cut himself? I try to manage a smile, but I can’t. “I’m sorry about earlier. I was just really upset about my mom and dad.” “Are you hurt?” “What?” I point at his arm; he looks down at it, then looks at me. You can still see red in his eyes from when he was crying. “I’m fine.” “Did your mom see that?” “No, I cleaned it up before she had a chance.” “Why did you hurt yourself Lucas?” “Can we go inside?” I nod then open the door. I walk inside and sit down on the couch; Lucas close the door behind him; then joins me on the couch. “Are you going to answer me Lucas?” “I’ve been doing it for a while; I’m surprised that you didn’t notice before.” “How would I have noticed?” “I did it every time my mom and dad fought, then the next day I would wear long sleeves.” “I guess I’m not a good friend for not noticing that.” “No, I’m happy you didn’t know.” “Lucas...” “That’s not why I came over here.” “Why did you come over?” “I’m dropping out of school.” “What?!” “I have to get a job to support both me and my mom.” “Lucas you’re a junior in high school; you only have one year left. Now, of all times, you chose to drop out!” “I have to Kirsty! If I don’t then my mom and I won’t have a home; the bills will stack up.” “Lucas you can’t drop out!” “I’m going to have to Kirsty, sorry.” “No, Lucas.” “We won’t get to see each other as much anymore. Actually I won’t get to see you at all.” “What?” He stands up and walks towards the door. I grab his shoulder and turn him around to face me. I try to hold in tears; but can’t. “Are you saying you’re dropping out of school, and we won’t be able to see each other as much anymore?” He wipes the tears away from my eyes and wraps his arms around me in a hug. I’ve never been this close to Lucas before. “I”m sorry Kirsty, but it has to be this way.” “No, it doesn’t. If you’d just let me help!” He kisses me full on the lips; my heart begins to race. He pulls back and sighs. My heart is still racing; it’s like I’ve been running. “I don’t want you in my problems Kirsty.” “Lucas...” He walks out of the door; going back home. Why won’t you let me help you Lucas? It’d be so much better than me standing here wanting you to be ok. I put my had to my heart; it is steadily slowing down. I make sure the door is lock then walk to my room. I look out my bed side window; there are a few stars, I can’t see the moon yet. The phone rings; this time I check the caller ID. “Hey mom.” “How’s it going honey.” “What’s with the unexpected call?” “I can’t call to check in on you?” “Not without a reason.” “Lucy called me, she told me about her and her husband. I was calling to check in on you.” “I’m fine.” “How’s Lucas?” “Not so good.” “Can I talk to him?” “He’s not here. He just left a few minutes ago.” “Oh. Hold on Lucy is beeping in.” I kick off my shoes and lay back on my bed. It’s normal that Lucas’s mom called my mom they’ve been friends for a very long time. “Kirsty?” “I”m here.” “Are you sure Lucas isn’t there?” “Yeah, I’m positive. What’s wrong?” “Lucy said that Lucas hasn’t come home in a while.” “Is she still on the other line?” “Yes.” “Tell her that Lucas should be home in a few minutes, he’s just walking.” “Alright. Thanks honey; I’ll be home Sunday night. Bye.” “Good luck at the casino.” I hang up the phone and put it on the hook. Lucas please don’t drop out of school; I need my best friend by my side through the rest of the year. I close my eyes and settle down. I’m going to get some sleep. I sit up. “Lucas! You jerk you kissed me! Just wait until I see you next you’re so dead!” I lay down; with a faint smile on my face. This is going to be a long weekend; longer than the ones before. I close my eyes, sigh deeply, then fade into sleep. ***** The sun shining through my window wakes me up. Just great it’s one of those Saturday’s. The Saturday where everyone is outside; old people sitting on there porches drinking tea or something else, little kids in bathing suites playing in some form of water; and teens at the movies. I take my cell phone off the charger and flip it open; I have sixteen missed calls, all of them from Lucas’s house. I hit the redial button; and wait for someone to pick up. “Hello.” “Hello Mrs. Lucy, I was calling to see who called me.” “I did. I couldn’t find Lucas, but he came home at about six this morning.” “Oh, that’s good.” “He wants to speak with you.” “Ok.” “Hey, I got really good news.” “What?” “I’ll have to come over and tell you.” “Uh, alright.” “I’ll see you in a few.” I hang up the phone. Lucas is in a better mood; I can tell by the way he sounded. I pick out a clean shirt and some pants. I grab my underwear and a towel and get in the shower. Lucas’s mom also sounded better. I take a quick shower; then get out. I put on my underwear then fix my hair. Maybe now Lucas won’t drop out of school; that’d make me so happy. I walk in my room; Lucas is sitting on my bed. “Ah!” “Wow, I guess I came a little to early.” “How did you get in my house?” “I know where you keep the spear key, remember.” “Get out until I get dressed.” “It’s not like you’re naked, just put your shirt and pants on.” I glare at him; he smiles at me. I grab my pants and put them on; I drop my towel, but quickly cover my chest with my arms; good thing I already have my bra on. I put my shirt on, then throw my towel on my door to dry. “Are we all dressed now?” “Shut up Lucas!” “I didn’t know you had such a nice...” “Lucas!” “What? I was just going to say shirt.” I throw a pillow at him; he catches it and smiles at me. I sit down in my computer chair and glare at him. “Don’t look at me like that Kirsty.” “What did you come over for?” “Oh yeah, my good news. I’m not dropping out of school.” “That’s great! What changed your mind?” “I found a great night job that pays a lot.” “What is it?” “I’m not telling you.” “Why? It’s not like I’m going to take it.” “You might. That doesn’t matter; I don’t have to drop out of school and we get to chill during the day.” He smiles at me. I stare at his arm; he’s wearing a long sleeve shirt. Still hiding the cuts he made on his arm yesterday. “Is that why you didn’t get home until late?” “Yes, I got hired right on the spot.” “What place...” “Lets go to the movies my treat!” He stands up and walks to my bed side window. I jump on my bed; and pull at his shirt. “What?” “We need to have a talk.” “About.” I point at my mouth and frown. He looks at me confused. “You kissed me yesterday.” “Did not.” “Did too. I remember Lucas; you kissed me.” “I think you’re going crazy Kirsty. Why would a hot guy like me kiss a girl like you.” “Lucas!” He pins me down to my bed; my heart starts to race again. He gets really close to my face. “What’s wrong?” “What are you doing Lucas?” He kisses me lightly on the lips; I try not to kiss back but I can help it. He runs his hands through my dark red hair; I wrap my arms around his neck and pull him deeper into the kiss. Lucas pulls back; and smirks down at me. I push him off; he hits the floor, he laughs. “I hate you Lucas.” “Come on we’re going to be late for the movie.” My jaw drops. We just made out in my bed and that’s all he has to say. We’re going to be late for the movies. I sit up and put on my shoes. What could be going through his mind right now; does Lucas really think of me more than a friend? We walk outside, it’s more than hot. I feel bad for him having to hide his cuts, while wear a long sleeve shirt in this heat. “What movie are we going to see?” “I don’t know. We’ll pick the best one when we get there.” “Lucas.” “What is it?” I want to ask him about the kiss and what he thinks of me now; but right now isn’t the best time. “How do you not know what movie we’re going to see?” He grabs my hand and pulls me towards the movie theater. I hurry to keep up. Lucas you’ve changed already. Just by what happened yesterday with your parents. Lucas you hugged me and kissed me twice. What is going through your mind right now? “Kirsty come on, I already got your ticket.” “To what movie?” “It’s called Blood Bath.” “A scary movie?” “Yes.” Lucas buys the popcorn, drinks, and a candy bar for me. We take our seats at the top of the movie. The previews are already showing; the theater is pretty full. Lucas is already munching on popcorn. “Give me some.” “No you have a candy bar.” “Lucas fork over the popcorn.” He throws popcorn at me and laughs. “There.” I snatch the bucket out of his hands; he makes a whimpering sound. I elbow him in the ribs. “Ouch!” “Excuse me can you be quite?” “You’re not my mom lady. How about you shut up and watch the movie.” The woman turns around; Lucas laughs. The movie starts, the first part is already about blood. Some woman gets killed in her car. Half way into the movie Lucas checks his phone then stands up. “Where are you going?” I make sure to keep quite so the woman in front of us doesn’t trun around and say somethin to us again. “Bathroom. I’ll be right back.” The movie ends about an hour later. I walk out of the theater and walk towards the bathroom looking for Lucas. “Where is he?” I walk outside; the sky is a mixture of blue, red, and pink. I look around; still no sign of Lucas. “Lucas!” I walk around the theater to see if I can find Lucas. There is a boy and a girl making out and doing other things behind the theater I turn around and walk the other way. There is no way Lucas could’ve walked past them. I look for Lucas inside of the theater again; but still no luck. I walk back behind the theater; the couple is still there. I look carefully; my heart skips a beat. It’s Lucas and some girl. I run back inside of the theater and sit down on a bench they have inside. That couldn’t have been Lucas. “Kirsty?” I look up; Lucas is standing there with a smug look on his face. Was that him? Was that Lucas. “Sorry about not coming back into the movie. I got in trouble; they said I looked like a guy that didn’t pay his way to get in.” “Oh.” “Are you hungry?” “Yeah.” “Lets get a burger.” “You still have money?” Lucas grabs my hand and pulls me. I have to hurry to keep up again or I’ll fall face first onto the ground. He doesn’t stop running until we’re at the local burger stop; we walk in and take our seats. The waitress walks over to our table, her blonde hair is up in a bun. “Are you ready to order?” “I’ll have a number three.” “Same for me; no ketchup or mustard on my burger.” “Why do you have to order the same as me Kirsty?” “Because I can Lucas.” “What to drink?” “I’ll have a sprite. Are you gonna get one too Kirsty.” “No, I’ll just have water.” She writes down our drink order then walks off. Lucas’s watch beeps four times. He quickly turns it off. “Why the alarm?” “It just tells me when I need to get to work.” “Come on Lucas; tell me where you work.” The waitress brings us our drinks; then walks off. Lucas takes a few sips of his sprite then sits it back on the table. “I’m not telling you.” “Why?” “Because I’m a private man and I want to keep my home life away from my work life.” “Whatever private.” Lucas laughs, then takes another sip of his drink. The waitress comes back with both our plates; she sits them down on the table and walks away. Lucas take a big bite of his burger; I laugh. “Don’t worry about it. At least I’m still in school and we get to hang during the day.” “You work at a night club don’t you?” “I’m not telling.” “That’s it!” “Kirsty just eat your fries, before I do.” He takes one of the fries off my plate and eats it. I try to take one of his but he hits my hand. “Ouch.” “My fries!” We both laugh. When we finish eating the sun is down and a few stars are already out. Lucas pays for our food; then walks me home. “Today was fun.” “Yeah I know. Except for you not getting to see the rest of the movie with me.” “I know; that really sucked.” “Why didn’t you just show them your ticked stub?” “I threw it away.” “Next time Lucas don’t throw it away.” “I’ll remember that.” His watch beeps four times; he turns it off. I walk up the steps of my house and unlock the door. “I’ll see you tomorrow Kirsty.” “Going to work?” “Of course. Bye.” “Bye.” I walk inside of the house and close and lock the door behind me. Today was a good day compared to yesterday. I wasn’t expecting Lucas to be in such a good mood after what happened with his mom and dad. I walk down the hall to my room; I plug up my cell phone then lay on my bed. I close my eyes and drift off into sleep. “Kirsty, wake up.” I groan and sit up. I rub my eyes and look around my room. It is still dark outside. “Kirsty?” “Lucas...is that you?” “Hey, sleepy head.” “What are you doing here so late?” “I brought you something.” Lucas puts a necklace around my neck. He smiles at me; I yawn. “You like?” “Lucas why did you buy me this?” “It’s a best friend necklace. Just a gift; I got paid a lot tonight. I’ll see you when the sun comes up.” Lucas walks out of my room. When I hear the front door close I fall back in my bed and go right back to sleep. ***** The sound of rain outside wakes me up. I sit up and rub my eyes; my clock reads 1:30 p.m. I over slept; it’s not like me to over sleep, but I can see why. I take the necklace off and look at it. Lucas what were you thinking sneaking into my house just to give me a gift. I get up, take my shower, then get dressed. I walk in the kitchen to grab a bite to eat. “Hey honey. I was wondering when you were going to wake up.” “Mom? What are you doing here?” “I do live here.” “You know what I mean.” “Grandma wanted to come home.” “In other words she ran out of money.” She laughs; lightly then puts a plate in front of me. It’s a turkey sandwich and chips; that’s my mom for you. “How has Lucas been lately?” “He’s been better since the thing with his parents. He got a night job.” “Where at?” “I think at some night club.” “Oh that’s good.” “What’s wrong?” “Nothing. Why do you ask?” “Well mom when you say oh that’s good it’s usually not good.” “Well I’ve heard from a few friend that Lucas has been sleeping around for money.” “Mom, really. You know Lucas; he’s a nice boy and he would never.” “I also heard that he was selling drugs.” “Mom!” “It’s just what I’ve heard.” “You know Lucas, and he would never do a thing like that.” She turns towards the sink; and runs some dish water. I take a few bites of my sandwich. “Just keep your eye on Lucas.” The door bell rings; mom walks out of the kitchen to the front door and opens it. It’s Lucas; only he would visit on a rainy day like this. “Hey Kirsty. It’s raining cats and dogs outside.” “Yeah I know. Thanks for the gift but did you have to give it to me so late last night?” “I’m happy you liked it and sorry about that.” “Uh...Lucas my mom has been hearing things about you.” “Like?” “Well...” “Lucas how is your mom?” Leave it to my mom to break into my sentence. I guess she doesn’t want me to ask him about it. I finish eating my sandwich and chips; then put my plate in the sink. “She’s just fine. It’s been a really long weekend for her.” “I was going to come over today but it’s raining so hard.” “Yes I know, I’m sure my mom would enjoy your company.” “Come on Lucas.” “Alright. I’ll talk to you later Mrs. April.” Lucas and I walk to my room; he sits in my computer chair and spins around. I sit down on my bed. “Where is the necklace I got you?” I take the necklace off my bedside table and put it back on. Lucas smiles at me. “Do you really like it?” “How did you afford it?” “I got paid.” “Lucas there is no way you get paid every time you work.” “I do.” “Lucas please I’m begging you, tell me where you work.” “Ok, I work at this night club down town. It gets a lot of business; and a lot of people come there.” “Oh, that’s great.” “Why?” “Well, my mom has heard some things.” “Like?” “That you are having sex for money and selling drugs.” Lucas burst into laughter. I throw a pillow at him; he catches it and throws it back. “How long have you known me Kirsty? Do you really think I’d do those things?” “No I don’t but I”m just telling you what my mom heard.” “Well your mom has heard a lot of crap. I guess that’s what I get for getting a job down town at night; rumors were bound to start, but I didn’t expect for them to spread so fast.” Lucas walks towards my window and looks outside. He sighs deeply then turns back toward me. He walks back over to my comper chair and sits down. “I only took that job because I wanted to help my mom.” “I know that Lucas, but I don’t want you to do anything that would hurt you.” “I’m not. I’m working at a night club.” “Can I go with you tonight to check it out?” “No, you’re to young to get in.” I hit him with a pillow; making the computer chair spin. Lucas laughs at me. “Just be careful Lucas.” “Of course, careful is my middle name.” “Isn’t that what you said before you lit those firecrackers that set the bushes next to your house on fire two years ago?” “Shut up.” “Lucas, your mother wants you home!” “Yes Mrs. April. I’ll see you at school tomorrow.” “Ok. No more late night trips to my house to give me stuff.” “Alright.” Lucas walks out of my room. After he leaves my mom walks in my room carrying a bowl of popcorn. “Why the random bowl of popcorn?” “I’m getting ready to watch a movie. You want to join?” “Sure, I’ll join you right after I check my e-mail.” “Alright.” ***** “So after I left you and your mom spent the rest of the day watching movies?” “Yeah, mostly ones with a sad ending.” “Did your mom cry?” “Yes, which was really weird.” “When is your dad coming home?” “I don’t know. Wait, why do you care?” “I don’t know just trying to make small talk.” The bell rings for seventh period. Good thing it isn’t Friday; regardless Mr. Duncan will still get onto all of us. Lucas and I walk into the classroom. “Yes we have a sub!” “Excuse me where is Mr. Duncan.” “Kirsty, don’t bother the sub.” “Mr. Duncan is in the hospital, he had a few breathing problems last night.” Lucas and I walk to our desk and sit down; in a few short minutes the bell rings and everyone is in the class room. “Hello everyone I am Mrs. Sims. I’ll be your sub until Mr. Duncan gets out of the hospital. I see here that he wrote down that all of you were working on an essay.” Beth raises her hand. “Yes?” “Some of us are finished with our essays.” “Well those of you who are finished can take a nap or do whatever; just be quite.” “I’m so happy I’m done with mine.” “Lucky you Kirsty.” “You’re almost done aren’t you Lucas?” “Yeah.” He takes out his essay; and begins to write on it. I lay my head down on my desk and look out the window. It’s been raining since yesterday; I wish it would clear up. Lucas grabs my shoulder as hard as he can and shakes me. “What?” “Oh, I thought you were sleep.” “That really hurt Lucas.” “Suck it up.” “Whatever. Are we still going to the new fast food place that opened up?” “That was today?” “Yeah, we talked about it at lunch.” “Really? What did I say?” “You said that we’d be able to go.” “Oh, well I can’t go.” “Why?” “Work.” “Lucas you said you didn’t have to work tonight.” “I lied.” “Lucas.” “We can go Friday.” “Fine.” The bell rings; everyone gets up and walks out of the room. Lucas and I begin our walk home; good thing the rain stopped. “You better promise me Lucas.” “Promise you what?” “Going to the new place Friday.” “What new place?” I stop walking; Lucas stops and stares at me. I glare at him as hard as possible. “What’s the matter Kirsty?” “Lucas are you ok?” “Hey Lucas!” I turn around to see some strange guy motioning for Lucas to come over to him and some other guys standing in a group. “Hey! Sorry Krissy I got to go.” “It’s Kirsty.” He runs towards the group. I continue my walk home; this is the first time I’ve walked home alone in a while, Lucas has always been by my side. It’s also not like him to forget things. “Mom I’m home.” “How was your day?” “What’s with you asking me all these questions nowadays?” “Maybe I’m turning into one of those mother’s you see on TV.” “I rather you not. What’s to eat?” “Pizza; it’s on the stove. Dad called while you were at school.” “What did he say?” “He just wanted to check in on us. He might be coming home around the time school gets out for summer.” “That’s great.” I stuff a piece of pizza in my mouth; Mom keeps talking about how dad is going to come home for summer. “Lucy told me that Lucas didn’t come home until six this morning. He took a quick shower then got dressed for school.” “Ok.” “Was he at school?” “Yes, where else would he have been?” “Kirsty, I keep hearing the rumors and so have Lucy.” “He works at a night club down town Mom. There are going to be rumors.” “Where is Lucas now?” “He went home.” I eat another piece of pizza; to try to avoid talking but it doesn’t work to well with my mom. “I’m telling you Kirsty, Lucas is doing bad things.” “Mom can we not talk about this?” She frowns and nods; her sign of giving up. That’s a good thing. I eat another piece of pizza then grab a drink out of the fridge. I walk in my room and get on my computer. I get on my e-mail; a few spam and that’s it. I shut down my computer and check my cell phone. No calls from anyone; not even from Beth. “Kirsty!” “What is it?” “Lucy wants to talk to you.” I walk into the living room and pick up the phone. Mom sits down on the couch with a slice of pizza on a plate and eats. “Hello.” “Kirsty I was wonder if you knew where Lucas was.” “I thought he went home.” “No, he didn’t come home and that’s why I’m worried.” “I’m sure he’ll be home soon.” “I called his cell phone and I got no answer. I’m really worried.” “If you want I could ask my mom if I can go out and find him.” “That would make me so happy.” I turn to my mom; she shakes her head yes while still taking a bite of her pizza. “She said yes. I’ll call you if I find him.” “Thank you so much Kirsty.” I hang up the phone; then walk to my room and get my cell phone. I walk out of the house and begin walking to the schoo. Lucas where could you be; it’s starting to get dark. You should at least been at home by now. I walk back to where I saw Lucas join the group of boys; they are still standing there some of them are smoking. I walk over to the group; I have a bad feeling about this. “Excuse me.” “Hey look it’s that girl that was walking with Lucas.” “Do you know where Lucas is?’ One of the other guys pull the guy I was talking to, to the side and tell him something I can’t understand into his ear. “I’m Blane, just in case you wanted to know.” “Oh, ok. I really want to know where Lucas went Blane.” “Justin just told me that he went past the school.” “Thanks.” “Your name is Krissy right?” “My name is Kirsty, not Krissy.” “Oh, Lucas said it was Krissy. You might want to be careful around here.” “I’m not scared.” “Lets just say we’re a nice group of boys. All the others won’t be so nice.” The group of boys all laugh at the same time. Blane laughs then smiles at me; I take a few steps back. “Thanks.” “No problem; anything for a friend of Lucas.” I turn around and being my walk towards the school; I can still hear Blane and the group of boys laughing. Why would Lucas even be friends with a group of guys like that? I walk past the school; still no sign of Lucas. The sky is staring to get darker by the minute. “Where are you Lucas?” “Hey girl.” I turn around to see some strange guy telling me to come towards him. I shake my head no then continue walking. “Hey!” He runs up and grabs my arm and squeezes it tightly. I try to pull away from him but I can’t. “Let me go.” “I wanted you to come here.” “Well I didn’t want to so let me go.” “I don’t think I will.” I try to yank away from him; but still no good. He grabs me by my hair and pulls it; I scream out in pain. He laughs. “Let me go!” “If you would’ve came to see what I wanted then maybe I would’ve let you go.” “Let her go.” “Lucas, help!” “No.” “I said let her go.” “What are you going to do about it?” Lucas punches the guy dead in the face; he falls to ground. I’ve never seen Lucas fight anyone before; I didn’t even know he could fight. “What are you doing here?” “Looking for you.” “Why?” “Your mom wants you to come home. Aren’t you suppose to be at work?” “That’s not important right now. We really need to get you home.” Lucas grabs my arm and pulls me towards my house. He’s sweating and he smells like he’s been smoking; but Lucas doesn’t smoke. When we get to my house the sky is pitch black dark. “Lucas are you going home?” “Yeah. Don’t come and look for me anymore.” “I only did it because your mom wanted me to.” “I know; and if she wants you to next time don’t. I won’t be there to help you next time Kirsty.” “You didn’t call me Krissy.” “Your name isn’t Krissy.” “You called me that earlier today.” “Oh, sorry.” His watch beeps four times; he quickly turns it off. I walk up the step of the porch of my house. “I’ll see you tomorrow Lucas.” “Yeah, whatever.” He walks off. I walk inside; mom is sitting on the couch watching the news. I walk in the kitchen and grab a bottle of water. “Did you find him?” “He walked me home.” “Kirsty you smell like you’ve been smoking.” “I do?” “Was Lucas smoking?” “No; but a group of guys that was standing by the school were.” “A group of boys. Are you alright?” “Yes I’m fine.” “That’s good, I was starting to worry.” “I’m going to turn in for tonight.” “Good night Kirsty.” “Night mom.” I walk in my room and take off my shoes. I change into my pajamas, pull my covers back and get in the bed. I really hope Lucas went home; I don’t want anything bad to happen to him. My cell phone rings; I answer it. “Hello.” “Kirsty, thank you for finding Lucas. He just walked in.” “You’re welcome Mrs. Lucy.” I hang up my cell phone and put it back on the charger. I’m so happy to know that you’re home and safe Lucas. I really don’t want to lose my best friend. *****

“Class take out a clean sheet of paper and write about your weekend. I’ll be taking up this assignment at the end of class.” I take out a sheet of paper and lay it on my desk. I wish Mr. Duncan would come back; he’s been in the hospital for about three months now. I also wish I could see Lucas; regardless of his promise to me he stopped coming to school. I haven’t seen him in what seems like forever; and when I do see him he’s standing with a different group of boys. “Kirsty can I have a sheet of paper?” Beth has moved into his seat next to me; I really do miss Lucas. My mom is staring to hear more and more rumors; which she believes that they aren’t rumors anymore. His mom, Lucy, is coming to our house more and more. Just yesterday she told my mom that Lucas didn’t come home again; where he stays at night she doesn’t know. “Earth to Kirsty?” “What is it?” “I asked you if I could have a sheet of paper.” I rip out a sheet of paper and hand it to Beth. I already know what her paper is going to be about. This weekend we went shopping at a new store that opened at the mall. I don’t mind Beth’s company but I miss when I used to hang out with Lucas. I really wish I could sit down and talk to him; but that’s not going to happen any time soon. “So Kirsty, what do you want to do tonight?” “I don’t know. What do you want to do?” “There is a new movie coming out tonight. Want to go?” “Sure.” I quickly finish the assignment and turn it in. Mrs. Sims has been watching me more and more. She even pulled me aside yesterday to talk about Lucas. The conversation consisted of her telling me that everyone loses friends and that Lucas is a boy and that he doesn’t want to hang around girls all the time; the same speech she gave me when Lucas stop coming to school a long while back. How she became my instant school mom I don’t know. “How has your Friday been Kirsty?” “It’s been find Mrs. Sims.” “What are you planning to do tonight?” “Going to the movies with Beth.” “That’s good.” I walk back to my seat and sit down. She startedd acting like that after her talk with my mom. I still don’t know what they talked about but knowing my mom she told Mrs. Sims to watch my every movement. “When was the last time you saw Lucas?” “What’s with the random question Beth?” “I don’t know. You don’t seem to be the same without Lucas around.” “I saw him the other day, but we didn’t talk.” “Oh.” The bell rings; everyone gets up and walks out. It’s another Friday that Lucas isn’t walking home with me. “So what time do you want to go to the movies Kirsty?” “Lets go to the nine o’ clock showing.” “Ok I’ll see you then.” Beth runs off towards her house; come to think of it I’m the only friend Beth really has. I wonder if she felt lonely when I was with Lucas. I walk in the house and toss my backpack in the corner next to the closet. I walk in the kitchen and take the note off the fridge from mom. Casino with grandma blah blah blah, money on the counter; it’s the same note every weekend. I set the alarm on my phone for seven thirty; I walk in my room and lay on my bed. I’ll sleep until seven then I’ll wake up and get dressed for the movie. “Kirsty.” I sit up in my bed; and groan. I rub my eyes and throw my feet over my bed Who called my name? “Are you awake?” “Lucas?” “Yeah it’s me.” “Lucas!” I throw my arms around him and hug him tight. He smells like smoke of all different kinds; there’s no used in lying to myself any more he’s been doing drugs. I pull away from him; he doesn’t look terrible but he doesn’t look like he used to before all of this happened. “Kirsty can I borrow some money?” “Money?” “Just a few bucks.” “Why?” “I have to pay this guy back right now and I’m short.” “How much?” “Thirty dollars.” “That’s not a few bucks Lucas.” “I know, I’ll pay you back after I’m done working tonight; promise.” “Alright.” I get my wallet out of my purse and hand Lucas forty dollars. An extra ten would be enough to maybe make the guy leave Lucas alone. He takes it from my hand; and walks out of my room. I follow him; he’s wearing a short sleeve shirt. “Lucas, you have cuts on your arm.” “Oh these, I made them a while ago.” “Why did you cut yourself?” “I got to go. Bye, Kirsty; we should hang out when I’m not so busy.” He runs out the front door. Lucas what’s going on with you? The alarm on my phone goes off. I walk in my room and pick out an outfit. I go in the bathroom and fix my hair; I walk to my room and quickly get dressed. I grab my purse and my cell phone and walk out of the house. I begin my walk towards the movie theater; there are a lot of stars out and a lot of people walking the street. I run to a near by corner, only one more mile to the theater. In the ally by the corner I can see two guys making out. The boy up against the wall has his hand down the pants of a guy with blonde hair. The blonde boy has both his arms wrapped around the other guy’s neck. I stop walking; I really don’t want to walk past them. My cell phone vibrates, good thing it was on silent; it would be awkward for them to stop what they’re doing and see me. I step back hiding myself from them. “Hello.” “Where are you Kirsty?” “I’m on my way Beth.” “Alright, I already brought your ticket. You can pay me back by buying the popcorn.” I hang up the phone and walk back around the corner. The two boys are still there, now the one with the blonde hair is moaning. How did Beth get past them? This is the only way to the movies. I get as close to the wall as I can and try to move around them. The blonde boy on the wall moves his head down to the other’s neck. I can clearly see the boy with his hand down the blonde boy’s pants. “Lucas!” I put my hand over my mouth. They both stop moving; the boy with the blonde hair pulls away and fixes his pants. I take a few slow steps back; I hope he doesn’t see me. Lucas fixes his clothes, the blonde boy kisses him full on the lips. “I’ll see you later baby.” He walks off in a different direction from me; but he’s not who I’m worried about. So it was true; the drugs and the sleeping around for money. “I know you’re there Kirsty. You can come out now.” I step into the light; I keep my head down. I really don’t want to look Lucas in the face right now. “You’re not going to look at me. Of course you aren’t. Are you happy that you finally found out what I do at night?” I shake my head no and try to walk past him put he grabs my wrist and won’t let go. I yank away from him but he still won’t let go. “Aren’t you going to answer me Kirsty?” I fight to pull away from him but it’s still no good. Tears are streaming down my face; the only thing I want to do right now is get away from him. I look up at him; he has hickies on the side of his neck and his hair is messed up. “Kirsty!” “No Lucas! No I’m not happy!” “Finally I get an answer out of you.” “Why Lucas? Why are you doing this?” “I need the money.” “So all of the rumors are true? You have sex with random people, you sell and do drugs. Tell me Lucas don’t lie to me anymore.” “Yes, it’s all true ok.” “What happened to your pride Lucas?” “It died the night I stared this.” “Is that why you cut yourself?” “I cut myself because I know what I’m doing is wrong and cutting is the only way I know how to punish myself.” “Lucas you quit school, you were a smart boy, you were my best friend, but now you’re on the street at night with some guy.” “No just guys, girls too.” “That’s not the point Lucas!” He reaches in his pocket and pulls out forty dollars and hands it to me. I look at my hand then back at him; the expression on his face is bland. “That’s the money I owe you.” He walks past me. The tears are coming faster now; I want to run after him but I know it won’t end well. I take out my phone and call Beth; there is no way I can go to the movies now. I clear my throat and wait for her to pick up. “Kirsty you better hurry.” “Beth I can’t come to the movies.” “Why?” “A family problem has come up.” “Oh, I’m sorry. Call me when you can.” “Alright.” I hang up the phone and sigh deeply. I’m sorry Lucas but your mother deserves to know what you do. I begin walking towards Lucas’s house. How will I tell her? How do you tell a woman that has nothing but her son left that her son is doing things he shouldn’t be doing. I walk up to the door of Lucas’s house and knock. Lucas answers the door; he stares at me with cold eyes. “Why are you here?” “I wanted to talk.” “To who my mom? You were going to tell my mother?” “Lucas.” “I don’t want you coming to my house anymore. Stay away from mother and I mean that.” He slams the door in my face; I bang on the door, but no one comes to answer. Tears stream down my face. I can’t let this happen anymore; Lucas I’m now in your problems. I begin walking home; I take out my cell phone and call my mom. “What’s wrong Kirsty?” “Mom, Lucas I need to help him get better.” “What’s going on Kirsty?” “He’s doing all of that mom.” “All of what?” “All the rumors are true and I tried to tell his mom but he was there and I couldn’t. Mom I have to help Lucas get better. He needs help!” “Kirsty, go in my room and look in my top draw you’ll find my address book.” “What help is that?” “Robert’s number is in it. He might not be there, but he still cares about his son. Call him and tell him and I’m sure he’ll do whatever he can to help Lucas.” I wipe away the tears and walk inside of the house. I make sure to take the other key inside with me; I lock the door then walk to my mom’s room. “Have you found it?” “Yes.” “Calm down Kirsty. If anyone can get help for Lucas it’s his father.” I hang up my cell phone. I flip through my mom’s address book for Lucas’s father. I have to call him he’s the only one that can make this better. I find his number and quickly dial it; the phone rings a few times. “Please pick up.” “Robert speaking. Who is this?” “Mr. Robert.” “Who is this?” “This is Kirsty, you know. I’ve been friends with Lucas for years.” “I remember. What’s the matter?” “Lucas.” “What about Lucas?” I spend the next three hours on the phone telling him about everything since the time he left. The cutting, the so called job, and Lucas dropping out of school. The only things I leave out is Lucas kissing me; that doesn’t seem like something important. After I finally finish telling him it’s silent for about twenty minutes. “Thank you for tell me Kirsty. Lucas will get help.” “When are you coming.” “I’ll be there tomorrow morning. I have to make a call to put him in an institution.” “It won’t hurt him will it?” “No, Lucas will only be going to get his life together. I promise Kirsty everything will be better.” “I just don’t want anything to happen to Lucas.” “He will be just find. Thank you for calling me Kirsty, you should get some rest.” “Yes, sir.” “I’ll call you before I come there so you can see Lucas before I take him to the institution.” “Thank you.” “Get some sleep Kirsty.” I hang up the phone and walk to my room. I lay down on my bed and cry into my pillow. I’m so happy he’s coming tomorrow; Lucas will finally get the help he needs. I close my eyes and drift off into sleep. My phone ringing wakes me up. It’s Lucas’s dad; he tells me to get up and go over to the house to make sure Lucas is there. No use in him coming and Lucas not being at home. I get up, take a quick shower, and rush over to Lucas’s house. Lucas is sitting outside on the porch leaning against the door. I call his dad and tell him about Lucas. I walk to the front door; Lucas stands up. “I told you not to come back here.” “I know Lucas but I want to get you help and I did.” “What?” A black car pulls up in the drive way. It’s the same car that Lucas’s dad was putting clothes and boxes in three months ago. The door opens and Lucas’s dad steps out with a concerned look on his face. “You call my dad?” “Lucas I’m sorry.” “How could you call him? I thought you were my friend Kirsty.” “I am.” “You’re nothing but a back stabber!” “Lucas, that’s enough. Kirsty did right calling me. Son if you needed help why didn’t you call me?” “I don’t need you.” “Lucas what you’re doing isn’t right and I’m here to help.” “I don’t want your help.” “But I do Lucas.” Lucas’s mother stands in the door way; tears streaming down her cheeks. She’s the main person that knows about the rumors and by now she has to know that they are true. “What?” “Lucas I know all the rumors I heard about you were true, but I didn’t want to believe them. Your father called me last night after you left again and told me he was coming. Lucas please, he only wants to help” Lucas clenches his fist; a tear runs down his cheek. He wraps his arms around his mom and cries into her shoulder. “I’m sorry. I just didn’t want us to lose the house and I know you couldn’t support us both.” “Lucas it’s fine you don’t have to worry anymore. Your father is here to help you Lucas; he’s going to take to a special institution. You’ll be ok.” Lucas pulls away from his mother and walks towards me. I turn my back to him; he grabs my shoulder and turns me to face him. “I’m sorry Kirsty. I know you only wanted to help. I’ll make you another promise and this time I’ll live up to it. When I get better, and when I come back home. We can go to the movies and just goof around. I promise.” “That sounds like a good promise Lucas.” I wipe the tears away from my face. Lucas wraps his arms around me and hugs me tightly. I don’t know how long Lucas is going away so right now I want to be as close to him as possible. “Lucas go and get your things, it’s time for you to go.” Lucas pulls away from me and nods. He walk in the house to go get his things. His mom and dad talk amongst themselves until he comes back outside. “Bye Kirsty.” “I’ll miss you Lucas.” “Don’t worry Kirsty, after a while they allow visitors. After a while when they let Lucas get visitors I’ll come here to get you.” “Alright.” I try to hold in tears but I can’t. Lucas waves bye; and the car pulls out of the drive way. Lucy walks back inside of her house; I walk back home. Maybe now Lucas will get the help he needs. It’ll be great to finally get him back; to finally get Lucas back to normal.

Wow. This is a pretty good story. I like the mystery of it. I would add it bit more paranoia to keep you on the edge with the suspense. If you'd like my advice, it could be more discriptive since most of it is talking. Commas, commas, commas. Basically all my english teacher talks about. Which, now, I see his point. A good writer can really paint a picture in your mind. I like the reality of this story. It's sad though. A very good job.
