She just did not understand. How did this happen? How could she be broke? That would mean she was overspending!
Ana Cruz, an over-spender? Ludicrous! She tipped the valet guy a twenty to park her brand new 2010 Porsche convertible, marching furiously through the parking garage of the Walk of Fame agency, her new pumps clicking on the floor with every step. She had just gotten her hair restyled and recolored at Los Demones's most famous salon, only to find out that her credit card was rejected when she tried to pay.
She hadn't been watching her spending much lately, but it was the holiday season! Besides, between the paycheck and royalties for her last photo-shoot in the beginning of the year and the money she received from her father's inheritance, she figured she had plenty to spend! But it seems she was wrong and she needed a new paycheck to come in - and as soon as possible.
She barged into the offices of the Walk of Fame Talent Agency, making her way directly to the secretary of Miss Phoebe Wilson.
"Excuse me chica, can you let Phoebe know that Ana Cruz is waiting for her and would like to speak with her as soon as possible," she said in a flurry of words before taking a seat by the secretary's desk. As she sat down she tapped her foot nervously on the floor. What if she wasn't able to get a new job? Working with Hannah Winter at Chic magazine was getting her nowhere fast, she hasn't done anything professional or for pay since January, and its almost a new year now! But that's what agents were for - finding Ana a job. All she needed to do now was wait.

The secretary blinked slowly and adjusted her glasses as she looked up, deliberately, at the model standing over her head. The girl, while still quite young (just out of college), had the air of someone who had been around the rich and the famous for years, which had quite obviously been a plus when Phoebe had chosen her. The girl cleared her throat and and opened her schedule book in front of her.
"I'm not seeing your name in here, Miss Cruz," she said, keeping the corner of her mouth from twitching. Not only was she never impressed by all the people that were in and out of Ms. Wilson's office, she almost seemed to have it out for them. Maybe it was from too many divas, she never really knew.
The blond agent, having heard her most beautiful (or so she would always coo to Ana's face) client burst in was leaning in the frame, waiting for her assistant to finish her crowing. As much as she liked seeing upity stars taken down by people other than herself, she couldn't let her secretary think that this was acceptable.
"Now, now," she said, smiling broadly. "I'm sure we can squeeze her in. Just stall my next appointment, won't you dear?" she said, an icy smile aimed at her assistant, Natasha, warming over as she held open her door with one arm and indicating Ana enter with the other.
"How are you? Lovely as always I see."

"Thank you, you look great too," Ana said, making friendly small talk. She started to enter Phoebe's office, but gave a cold look to the secretary before fully emerging into the room. What a b***h.
Once in Phoebe's office, she immediately sat down on the small couch and lied down, resting her head on the armrest and getting comfortable as if she was in her therapist's room. --Not that Ana had a therapist, because that would imply she had a problem of some sort! She put her tiny purse down on the ground, hearing the keys jingle against the flask of vodka inside.
Right. No problems.
"I need a job, I really do," she said with desperation in her voice. Finding herself uncomfortable already, she stood up straight in her seat. "I've been trying to stay with Chic magazine, buttering up to Hannah Winter, but its gotten me nowhere. I haven't gotten a paycheck since January and I'm finding myself in a financial crisis now." She spoke nervously and rapidly. Financial crisis? Hm, maybe this was like that economic crisis she heard about on the news.
"Do you have anything for me? I know its last minute, but I need to pay the bills."

Natasha stuck out her tongue at Ana's retreating back, and pulled it in quickly as Phoebe glared at her and shut the door behind Ana. Phoebe wondered briefly if she'd need a new secretary soon, but decided that she actually quite liked the brattiness of the girl. As long as it didn't affect business.
When the door shut, she watched Ana cross the room and make herself comfy on the (very expensive!) leather couch. It had always been more of a sort of...decorational piece. She cringed inwardly a bit, to see the model flop down on it. Phoebe let it go, like many other things her clients did, and continued to smile and listen patiently.
The blond woman shuffled through some papers on her desk. She wasn't exactly looking FOR anything (the meticulous woman knew exactly where the paper was, that was about a magazine looking for a model for a photoshoot) but she wanted to appear as though she was doing more work than she really was. It always seemed to make them more grateful...or something.
"Well...hmm." She set a few letters off to one side, as though they might be something potential to give her. "I'm not entirely sure. Hannah, she's a difficult one to talk to, isn't she?" Her tone of voice changed, ever so slightly as it always did, when she was trying to plant ideas. "I know I'd certainly have a hard time talking to such a powerful woman about work." She peered over the top edge of a piece of paper, at Ana. "But I'm sure that you wouldn't, you'd have already spoken to her about your...dilema?"
Before wasting Ms. Wilson's time.

"I didn't tell her about my situation yet, no," she said, fiddling with her fingers nervously. Perhaps that would have been a good idea, but Hannah probably would have fired her on the spot in refusal to have a poor person among her staff of assistants. Besides, it would sound so desperate asking for a job. "I didn't want to come off as desperate or pushy, that could really kill my chances of ever getting a job with her."
Ana attempted to peer at the papers Phoebe was searching through on her desk, but was much too far away to get a good look. Did she have something for her? That would certainly solve the situation. At this point, she'd take pretty much any job!

The blond woman's friendly gazed iced over, just slightly, and it would be almost hard to tell that she was even angry, except by those who knew her well (and she had made it a point in her life to never get TOO close to anyone).
"Ah, of course," she said. "Well, I suppose..."
She finally reached into her bottom drawer (where she really kept her potential jobs) and pulled out a file. Handing it over to Ana, she shrugged.
"You can look that over and decide in a day or so, if you need to," she said.

Ana glanced briefly at the file. It was a photoshoot for BELLE magazine. BELLE?! That was one of Chic's top competitors. Doing a shoot for them would be stabbing Hannah in the back!---
"I'll take it," she said. Ana knew that back stabbing was common practice in the world of fashion, and Ana had no problems playing by the dirty rules of the game. "Hannah will hate me, but I need the money. Send BELLE my portfolio, ask if they're interested and I'll sign with them for the shoot," she said, starting to get nervous. Normally Ana wouldn't hesitate backstabbing to get what she wants, but this was Hannah Winter. And you just don't mess with Hannah Winter. Perhaps she was being too bold?

Phoebe didn't feel surprised at Ana's acceptance of the job, but she feigned it, for appearances sake. "Well...if that's what you really want."
It wasn't for the blond agent to keep jobs from her, although she had secretly hoped the model wouldn't burn one of her best bridges. Ah well. Perhaps Phoebe had invested too much time in Ana already... After all, what was the point of having a prize like this exotic model if the model was about to chuck any chances at a future down the toilet?
But then, maybe appearing in BELLE would help her fame. Who knew in this town?
"If you want to think about it a bit longer, I'll understand." She tried once more. "I've had that for awhile now. They keep sending back models I send to them. And after all," she looked up here, catching Ana's eye. "It is a very BIG decision."
She doubted Ana was going to take the hint.

"It might be best to give it some time to think, you're right," Ana said, feeling a bit more rational. But it wouldn't Ana in crisis mode if she weren't a teensy bit irrational. "I'll let you know before the end of the night."
A few hours, that was plenty of time to make a possible life-changing decision that carries the possibility of several career-shattering ramifications, right? Of course it is. "Thank you Phoebe."
She rose to shake Phoebe's hand, a large smile on her face. Maybe everything will turn out okay. Or disastrously. It was a 50/50 shot.
