Since most people in America are Christian.
I highly doubt it. There's a lot of christians, but not most americans are christians.

Though I can definitely say I don't enjoy when people make negative or ignorant comments about Buddhism, you can't really blame them for doing so. Buddhism is still relatively new to the west...

I guess I've just gotten used to this and have accepted it. I feel firm in my beliefs and don't need anyone else to approve of them. There are many religious practices and beliefs in other religions I certainly don't agree with, but I figure to each their own. For me Buddhism is the way, and that's all there is to it. If someone genuinely wants to know about it, I'm more than happy to try and explain it to them. However, if they insist on being ignorant then I just don't let it get to me.

Yes, it's sad to know how ignorant and just plain stupid people can be when it comes to knowing even a little tiny bit about Buddhism, or any religion for the matter. But at least its a good way to tell who's the competent and intelligent among us.

Buddha wasn't fat, though.

I've been told that the fat man is either a respresentation of the Buddha as being content, or the chinese "jolly fat man"

Buddha was Indian, and though he had a slight belly, he wasn't what I think anyone in the right state of mind would consider fat.

I agree about his representation as fat because he was content but I'm almost 100% sure he was born in Nepal? Can someone who is sure clear this up?

I think the ridicule yields less from stupidity and more from ignorance. You ridicule what you don't understand. If they understood the meaning of "Fat Buddha" I highly doubt anyone worth holding a conversation with would still mock it.

I am shocked at the lack of knowledge most people have when it comes to Buddhism. Whenever I say that I'm Buddhist, or whenever I quote Buddha I always get a response like, "Oh, don't you worship that elephant guy with 8 arms?" or "Don't you worship that fat guy?" one girls response to that last one was "No, no, hes only fat when he sits down!" I've heard people call Buddha a god, the son of god, and all sorts of other things they pul out of their a**. My favorite is "Aren't Taoists those people who yell at trees?" gonk Scociety's lack of knowledge on this is appaling, so many people with so many misconceptions. Ever feel like Buddhism is disrespected and not taken seriously?

Well, as far as the poll goes, some people have the same opinion of Jesus, so it isn't just Buddhists that get it.

I wouldn't say its ridicule, just stupidity and ignorance.

Well ... since we are 'pagan worshippers of fat, smiling, bald fellows with multiple arms' instead of a large letter "t" and someone bleeding on it ( I hope no one gets offended by this ... sweatdrop ) ... we would pretty appear weird to them ... blaugh

In fact, I didn't know we were 'pagan worshippers of fat, smiling, bald fellows with multiple arms', but well ignorance is really really powerful ... sweatdrop

I remember when I had first made the choice of practicing Buddhism. I told my father and he gave me this very strange look. My friends did as well and said something along the lines of, "Buddhism... Isn't that the Chinese thing where you worship that big fat guy?" My distant relatives were not too keen on it, seeing as they were what you'd call (as my friend puts it), "Hard core, fire n' brimstone spewing, bible-thumping Christians". When they somehow found out, they would tell me that I was not a Buddhist... That I was born a Christian and I would always be a Christian. Their lack of acceptence hurt for awhile... Been then I remembered that it is important not to let other people's ignorence put such a negative effect on me... and that my family is crazy.

But I find that Buddism seems to be the least respected well known religion out there based off of reactions I have seen in person and things I have read. It's a shame really... Buddhism is such a lovely religion, it should definatly be treated with more respect.

I suppose the difficulty Buddhism has with "outsiders" is that it's really a religion you have to find yourself. And even then, it can be a relatively private matter. I don't know of any sects that are actively converting people all over the place... but that's just as well. Can't force people to understand when they don't want to.

Also.. like any religion that has a few millennia of history and many sects... there's a LOT of metaphysical elements that snook in, and generally makes Buddhism a bit bizarre looking from the outside if you don't understand that all that stuff is rather optional... and most of it has little to do with the point.

Oh well. sweatdrop
