I was thinking of doing a bit of bug catching in towns but I'm concerned that if I equip my net I'll lose my skin!
Can anybody help?

I don't think you need a net to go bug catching. When i went around carolling, i clicked on the bugs and i caught them. Of course, i had to be right next to it, but you can still catch bugs without equipping a net.

Thanks for the information. I'm guessing no fishing either?
Is making it harder to keep my skin particularly as I am taking part in a Secret Santa and somebody has sent me a gift I've never heard of and I'm sooooo tempted to try it on!

The fishing pole is not equip able so you should also be able to go fishing. (I haven't tried this myself tho 'cause I usually don't fish)
...and as for the item you CAN play with the item as long as you do NOT SAVE your avatar. So no hitting the save button... but you can see what it would look like. ...OR you can make a mule and play with the rest of your items on that. (what I did) =3 Hope this helps!

You don't need to equip the net or fishing pole to do either activity.
