Who: Kinsey and Phiel
Where: It's a myyyystery~
When: Christmas Eve
Weather: Cold, nippy, with some snow starting to fall

"Where the hell is he? I told him to be here at six! I told him I had to get ready! It's almost seven!" Kinsey through her hands up and disappeared back into her room.

Varun watched her from the kitchen. The redhead was currently shirtless, watching his guardian flit to and fro as she worried. The leviathan kept considering sampling the Christmas cookies, but Kinsey had slapped his hand away and told him they were for Phiel, not Varun. Besides, she'd taken him to the depot store and he'd already had his fill today. Then she ran back into the bathroom to try styling her short hair again.

The leviathan sighed and lounged against the fridge, flicking his wings boredly as Kinsey darted back out. Varun sighed again, more dramatically, this time, and shook his head. "No," he rumbled, wondering idly when he became a fashion consultant. "...too...flat." The Raevan ducked when Kinsey hurled her hairbrush, face turned red as she stomped back down the hall. Varun huffed and rolled his eyes. She was twisting his words again and-

Varun glanced over when the doorbell rang. He floated over and undid the latch. Varun frowned when he did not recognize the teenager at the door. "Zuzen?" he demanded.

"Yeah, where's-"

"ZUZEN I TOLD YOU TO BE HERE AND HOUR AGO. JUST TAKE VARUN AND LEAVE."

"But he's not wearing any-"

"I SAID TAKE HIM!"

Varun and Zuzen exchanged looks. Kinsey had made this explicitly clear earlier. Zuzen was Kinsey's brother. He was not a threat. He was going to take Varun to Kinsey's mother and he would stay with her family for the evening. If he behaved, Kinsey would take him out after Christmas. This was very important to Kinsey, that much was obvious. Sighing, Varun shrugged and nodded to Zuzen.

"Seeya, sis!"

"Goodbye, Kinsey. Good luck," Varun rumbled quietly, slipping out the door after Zuzen.

Kinsey emerged from her room a few minutes later, finally dressed and come to fetch her high heel (yeah, the one she whipped at Varun's head), when there was a knock on her door.

"It's open!" she yelled, not really thinking about it.

There were flakes of snow still in Phiel's hair, littering the soft red yarn of his scarf, and melting gently on the broad shoulders of his black wool dress-overcoat; his face was flushed from the chill, and though he looked utterly composed, his grey eyes still and his features somewhat impassive, his stomach was tying itself up in complex knots. Deep breathing, he thought, was not helping. It was just making his head, which was already light, feel like it wanted to float off his shoulders.

Shifting the large bouquet of roses he carried to the other arm and feeling thorns prickle at his elbow, Phiel knew he'd been standing still thinking too long about this, but what did one even say in a situation like this? 'I'm here'? 'Have some roses'? This was not his forte, and he knew that better than anyone.

Nothing was going to be gained, he told himself as a bolster as he lifted his head to stare up at the door, by standing around here like a creeper. Approaching like a man with confidence though he didn't necessarily feel it, Phiel knocked, and when he heard her voice, his bravado felt as if it would melt away. Come on, man, he told himself, making a moue of distaste at his own indecisiveness, you're acting like a child.

And so, shifting the flowers so he could take hold of the doorknob, he announced himself politely -- "very well, I am coming in, then..." -- and opened the door, stepping inside quietly. "Good evening," Phiel said, surprised that it came so easily, though he barely had time to celebrate, as his words dried up at the sight of her.

Kinsey's head jerked up and she flashed Phiel a quick smile. "Hi! Hi, I'm almost ready! I'm sorry I'm not ready yet, my brother was late coming to get Varun, and then Varun didn't want to leave, and I think he took my shoe, and-" The young woman threw her hands towards the ceiling and, for lack of better words, growled. "It's a plot, I tell you. I'm never late when I actually want to be." Kinsey made to run a hand through her hair, remembering not a moment too soon she had already styled it.

She paused, realizing she'd been babbling, and flushed a little deeper. "I...my shoe. Just let me find my shoe, and I'll be ready to go, okay?" Kinsey rubbed the red gems under her eye and smiled softly. Catching herself, she glanced away and just by chance, noticed the shoe hiding under the oven. She sighed in relief and hobbled over, sinking to the ground before trying to retrieve the heel. She caught it, barely, and dug it out, dusting it off before sliding it on.

"Okay. Okay, I'm ready-" The young woman wobbled, clearly not used to the form-fitting dress or the shiny heels, or even the painted nails or lightly applied makeup. "Whoa." She glanced away, sheepish. "I, uh. Just...my coat."

"It's okay," said Phiel, at the flustered, quick apology, and he smiled sheepishly, biting his lower lip as he looked at her. Damn, his mind supplied. She looked absolutely wonderful, and he was more than content to just watch her and listen to her talk for a long moment. He'd never seen her quite this way, and truth be told, the slow appreciative smile that spread across his mouth was more than honest. A soft breath escaped him as he just observed a moment. Something in his chest loosened, eased -- tension unwound, settling back down warm and comfortable there.

"You look... amazing," he said quietly, some of the usual gruffness in his tone easing into a surprised warmth. "I brought flowers..." Somehow, though, they seemed inappropriate in the face of this. "Though I suppose it is up to you what to do with them..." Phiel sounded faintly embarrassed, at that, his cheeks pinking just a bit despite himself.

"Flowers!" Kinsey chirped, shrugging her coat on with far less grace than her dress demanded. Phiel had brought her flowers! (He was also turning a little pink, but Kinsey chose to ignore that or-) No, it was a little too late; the young woman's dark cheeks had already taken a rosy hue. Ducking her head, Kinsey took the flowers and quickly evacuated for the kitchen. "One second!" she called, pulling out a vase.

Once the flowers were appropriately taken care of, the indigo-haired woman emerged from the small kitchen, flush still visible as she approached Phiel. Standing next to the older man, she offered him a tiny grin and nodded towards the door. "Are you ready to go?"

Smiling when she returned, Phiel found himself genuinely... happy, if embarrassed at himself. Watching her emerge from the kitchen made him melt, just a little. That sweet blush... was that his fault? He drew a deep breath, and offering his best smile -- the one he hoped said I am confident and in control of this situation -- he gently held out the crook of his arm, an old-fashioned gesture of chivalry. Even though Kinsey hardly needed to be chauffeured around on the arm of a man, strong enough to stand on her own, seeing her this way made him want to play the old-fashioned gentleman, even if just for tonight.

"I am indeed ready," murmured Phiel gently, inclining his head with a soft chuckle. "Whenever you are."
