T h e _ s t o r y _ b e g i n s . . . _ Zol, a known criminal of the Joanai people, better known as The West Tide, has a personal vendetta against his ruler, King Rasarei. To get his revenge, Zol breaks into the royal palace in attempt to kidnap the heiress of his people, Princess Razei. However, his plans are twarted and he is thrown into the dungeon. Later, the princess he had been aiming to capture appears in front of his cell. She tells him she'll let him out as long as he promises to take her with him. Long story short, the two escape and fall in love. When word of his daughter's detrayl reaches him, the king strips her of her title as crown princess and exiles her forever, leaving the younger Princess Selene as the new heiress.
Years go by and Razei and Zol are blessed with a beautiful baby boy named Sebastion. However, their happiness only lasts a few short years before Razei discovers that Zol has been living a secret life and has another younger son with a commoner named Luna Rose. That boy's name is Orion. In a rage, Razei murders Zol: The West Tide and lives her life broken hearted in the depths of insanity. Meanwhile, her son is left to fend for himself and eventually seeks out refuge with his father's brother, Yuca, and his family. Back at the palace, King Rasarei passes and now Princess Selene is named queen. Fearing for her position, she seeks out and murders her banished sister and begins her search for the missing son, Sebastion.
Hearing that his mother has become a shut in, Sebastion and his cousin, Keturai, travel back to our central character's childhood home only to discover that his mother (or her body, rather) is, in fact, missing and her home is a wreck. When they began wandering the town asking questions, they are confronted by a mysterious figure, another Joanai named Rain. Rain tells Sebastion of his mother's murder and that his life is in mortal danger. As the boys hurry back to Yuca's house to gather their things, Selene is tracking down any tie she can relating back to Zol and the illegitimate prince. The first place they go? They track down Luna Rose and Zol's b*****d son, Orion.
W T F _ i s _ a _ J o a n a i ? Standing at average human heights, they have slightly round faces adorned with sharper features (a pointed nose for example). Their skin is generally pale, if not whitish, but some have been known to get a tad bit of color to them. Front teeth are extremely flat but the canines are very pointed (but not so much that they look like vampires). Finger nails are thicker than a human's nails but do not quite yet resemble claws. Joanai hair is also usually thicker and shaggier than human hair.
Joanai hair color generally ranges from grey, white, and soft blonde to sandy blondes and light browns. Although the darker colors are genetically recessive. Rarely will you ever see a Joanai with black, or even dark hair, but it IS possible. Red hues in Joanai hair are even more rare than black hair. Eye color is generally secondary colors: greens, blues, & violets. Grey is also very common. Very fair-skinned Joanai are known to have brownish (maroon) or even red eyes. Blonde Joanai are even known to have a goldish hue to their eyes.
By nature, Joanai are very lean or lithe. Body sizes are usually between average and thin and usually, it is very difficult for one of these beings to bulk up a lot of muscle mass. Being creatures of nature, they are all born under a hailing element. Common elements are earth, wind, fire, water, shadow, ice, rock, and lightning. While the four basic elements are more common (earth, wind, fire, & water) the remaining four elements are not completely uncommon. All of this means that the element is naturally drawn to the indiviual. As a young child, it may protect or guard them and, as the individual grows into adulthood, a strong bond is formed. Tis bond enables the Joanai to request actions from the element, so it may appear as the Joanai has control over the element. However, if the individual at any time begins to lose its ties with nature, the element may stop responding to calls from them. Pending on the mood of the Joanai, while calling out to their element, their eyes may darken into a pure black or cloud over into a pure white.
As a Joanai reaches their adolscent stage, their bond with their element (or nature as a whole) becomes strong enough to cast a simple illusion of "transformation." The element causes it to appear as if the individual changes into an animal guide. The stronger the bond, the more the individual literally becomes the illusion. Mature Joanai can literally transform into their charted animal form. However, if their ties with nature begin to weaken, so will this skill. Also, due to their ties with nature and natural energy, it isn't strange to see mature Joanai travel about as mages, witches, wizards, healers, or other magical professions. However, most Joanai that take up such professions are nomadic.
Nomadic Joanai are very rare. This species/race tends to be proud and remain among their own kind. They're a pretty well kept secret to the rest of the world. Although rumors of their existance always persist. They are very conscious of rank and duty. Upper class citizens and lower class citzens rarely mingle among each other.
There are also two cousin species/races very similar to Joanai. Mjric (mee-air-ick) and Urphin (yer-fen). Mjric are much more peaceful and isolated (surprisingly) existing in a singular small community. They do not communicate with outsiders and are extremely difficult to locate. They are generally tanned (think native american) with red colored hair (generally) and are very tall and very thin and eye color is usually primary colors (reds, oranges, and yellows). Urphins, on the other hand, are very social. Short (the tallest being about five feet) they are very dark skinned with either black or white hair. All Urphin have black, white, grey, or brown colored eyes.
