Yeah, but it's a stigma too. I mean, was NBA09 a bad game? I'm sure not. But right away 2K9 comes out and they say, "Let's compare it to 09!" And then, "Well, 2K9 is better. Therefore, 09 is s**t. Don't bother with it at all!"

I guess when you're not the best in a category of 2 then it does make you the worst, it's not like there were any other major basketball games for the 2009 season. It may still be a good game but to not be the best is all it takes to not be a good sports game.

Well yeah, I guess when there's only one alternative, it is black and white. As opposed to, like, shooters, where you get a dime a dozen. And many of them are good, and many are bad, but there's no clear consensus on which is the worst, unless it's epicly bad and gets like a 1.0 on every site.

Point is, there's a large, grey area in shooters, and other genres. With sports, they don't even place the national league and the college league into one gategory some of the time. Even though it's still Football/Basketball/what-have-you. And it's so formulaic that it would be difficult for another publisher to say, "Let's make a sports game" because what could they possibly do to make it original? I'd love to see a current generation "Mutant League Hockey".

Sports games are less about sports and more about simulation. It always feels like each year of FIFA brings the horrible threat that this year will allow players to dive. I'd just like to see more sports games which is less about playing the game like the real sport and more about playing the game!

Yeah, that's true. I mean, graphics is one thing... Having near-realistic players on the field is always good. But going over the top to have every possible combination of sports moves and maneuvers that ever existed for that one sport... Yeah, it's essentially a "Simulation" game, and not so much a "Sports" game. I mean, I used to play a LOT of sports games, back in the 8 Bit, 16 bit, etc... But NHL2000 is as complicated as I'm willing to take time learning.
See, that's another problem with today's gamer society. There's WAY too much focus on realism and practicality. All the aesthetics get sacrificed for "realistically believable", i.e. the new super ugly Batmobile. And all the fun is traded for, "Let's make this as close to real life as possible." Before you know it, it's gonna be like, "My character is shot. I'm forced to sit here for five minutes as he's writhing in pain. Oh no! He's going into shock!" GTA games are gonna have full standard transmission with clutch and everything. And you'll have to change the oil.

I agree that people tend to pay too much attention to the visual of a game above all else. But then, it's the same with everything in society. As humans we tend to put more importance on sight than anything else, including how we judge each other as human beings. rolleyes
