To be honest I haven't had much experience with the French, though I read a tourism survey that said they have a tendency to refuse to learn other languages.

Not that I'm in a position to complain about that, since all I can speak is English.

That's not the question you should be asking. Substitute "believes" with "wants to admit." I will say with some confidence that most people in a developed country like France have at least a rudimentary knowledge of English. Enough to, say, tell a tourist where the nearest bus stop is. stare

That's not the question you should be asking. Substitute "believes" with "wants to admit." I will say with some confidence that most people in a developed country like France have at least a rudimentary knowledge of English. Enough to, say, tell a tourist where the nearest bus stop is. stare

I know people in America that wont even do that though.

I asked a Boston police officer how to get to south station, this is how the conversation went:

Me:"can you tell me how to get to south station?"
Officer:"Yes"
.......................
..............
........

Me: "So...are you going to tell me?"
Officer: "yes"
..................................................................................
..............................
....

Me: "ok, thanks for you help" *slips away and looks for someone more usefull*

Yeah, the police there aren't very helpful.

As long as you have enough patience to ask them to repeat all over again and maybe even spell the words for you...

Frenchmen are the last nation on earth that I want to hear speaking English. Spanish are 2nd to them, btw.
