My school district has a program, called middle school band night. Basically, the middle school bands go to a high school in the same district on the night of a football game to see what it's like to be in high school marching band. I'm not sure if other school districts do this, but I wanted to share a video that I got from this year when the trumpet section started doing the YES dance and the colorguard joined in. Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vgo2IS24S00If you have middle school band night in your school district, post a video here from it or tell a story you have from any of the middle shcool band nights you've experienced. If you don't have middle school band night, share some stories or videos from a football game or competition. And yes, I know this topic is posted at the wrong time of the year, but I just came up with this topic and wanted to share.

We have middle school night at my high school. The two middle schools that combine to form my school's student body have their band come to a football game, and we all play stand tunes next to each other. There's not really too much out of the ordinary that happens during that night though. The high schoolers try and make the middle schoolers do our dances in the stands. That's about all.

We have that too. Usually, we have two seperate ones for the two different schools that feed into us most. I have a story from this year, which we had both groups on the same night.
Well, we were supposed to have it at a football game. Unfortunately, this was upposed to happen when our stadium lights became stupid and we couldn't se our field because of the possibility that they might explode(*eyeroll*)So, instead, the eigth graders came and watched us have a rehearsal. Not the best idea for the day before state championships. They talked the whole time we were actually rehearsing. We were already marching in almost pitch black. This was the second night where the only way we could see our dms was having ineligibles shining flashlights on them. After it got relaly dark we went back inside and played stands tunes with the eighth graders. Now that was interesting. Our BD had us go into 20 minute sectionals so the eighth graders would knnow how to play the music better so they had more fun. Well, our clarinet SL had us high schoolers "show them how to do it". We completely failed. We started laughing. I mean, we have had this music all year, two for some of us, and yet we completely butchered it. It was pretty funny. And it was on one of our favorite tunes too(crazy trainXD)

We dont really have middle school night. Once in a while we invite the middle schoolers to do pep-band with us. But middle schoolers in 7th and 8th grade can choose to do marching band if they want. =) That's what I did, and I love it... though my seventh grade year was a catastrophy.
Though the marching band middle schoolers like me who actually could play where invited to do stuff with high school concert band like concerts and district festival and such.

The middle schoolers play with us in the stands on senior night, which is the last home game of the season. It sucks. Because generally, middle schoolers are annoying as hell. At least the ones here are.

Well, there's always a thing they have called "8th Grade Night" It's where any 8th grade band students who aren't in marching band get to march with the marching band when they enter. They also get to know about the marching experience and all. Then during the game, they get to sit in the stands with the marching band and off the side of the football field when they perform. Our band teacher gets pissed at any 8th graders that miss out on that chance. xD
I can't find any videos, though.

In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance...
We also have something similar to that. Only it has nothing to do with Marching Band. The 7th and 8th graders come over to the High School to play 1 song that they've learned, then we play, then we all play a combined song.
The song was Guillaume Tell (William Tell Overture). Extraordinarily slow when we play with the 7th graders, but still a blast. We try to keep as many band people as we can in this ever-shrinking band-related world we live in.
... In Switzerland they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace, what did they produce? The cuckoo clock.

We have the same thing here. One game of the football season, the 8th graders (and some 7th) come and sit with us in the stands (we warm up, stretch, play, etc. with them). We all go out on the field and play the fight song during halftime (no halftime show D: )
It's all good fun most of the time. Sometimes there's kids that think they're hot stuff because they're in 8th grade and they act snotty and incredibly immature. I want to slap them, but I never do :L
I remember when I was in 8th (or 7th...don't remember) and they scheduled 8th grade night on the homecoming game. The band members in high school were incredibly angry (I don't see why they wouldn't be).

We have two events.
One is "Area Night", where all the elementary cheerleaders and middle school cheerleaders get to perform cheers during the game with the high school cheerleaders. The middle school band also comes and performs with the high school band for pre-game and sits/performs in the stands until after the half-time show.
The other is our "Area Concert", in which our feeder elementary schools' "advanced bands" (six-graders, typically), the middle school band, and the high school band perform in the gym, with each group performing its own piece (usually pop music) and the Jazz Band A performing. Then we all perform a mass band piece. It's usually during late winter.
My favorite Area Night (the football one) was my freshman year. It started raining that night, pretty hard. The middle schoolers had to go home before they even came out to rehearse with us. We were told we had to wear ponchos, and so we did. Moldy, smelly "clear" ponchos. In uniform. With our instruments. Woodwinds didn't perform pre-game, and afterward we all we home. biggrin It was also our school's rival game, which we won. xD
