Pyro looked in the direction the sound came from, and kept looking back at it as they retreated toward the caves. She didn't want to be surprise attacked by a great wyrm...

Meri continued to swear as he practically ran down the mountain side and onto the hidden path to the caves.

"That was one of my cousins. I do not recognise the voice, but the word 'attack' kind of startled me." Meri swung around and indicated that his companions should continue down the path. "I do not know how many dragons were up there, but that voice was powerful, one of the chromatic leaders."

"Sounds like a party." Pyro commented sarcastically as Bale stumbled down the slopes at his top speed.

"Not a party I want to be at." Meri went around a tree stump. "Even."

((Okay, warping time a little again.))

Not long after hearing the roar, another couple split the air. Meri was glad that, a few minutes later, they came across the first caves in the system.

"Let's be keepin' movin'. Not sure what's inside or out, but we'll be needin' t' get t' the monastry quickly as possible. We'll try to keep the horses wi' us, but they might'n be needin' t' be left behind. No' sure yet."

Pyro had jumped off Bale and was leading him as they entered the caves.
"They're coming with us." She said with conviction. "And anybody got a torch?" She looked between Rayel and Meri.

Meri sang a few notes and a small group of coloured lights sprang into being.

"Better than torches," he said, waving two ahead while keeping three back.

Rayel knew she should be beyond this by now, but she couldn't help gawking at the pretty lights. The knight shook her head; this really wasn't the time. Echoes of the last roar was still shaking the pebbles on the ground, and the woman couldn't tell whether there was another snarl within the cave itself.

Looking over her shoulder often, Rayel hurried after the other two.

Pyro followed along the path of the lights with her two companions, equally uneasy as Rayel.
"Do you have the slightest clue where we're going?" She asked Meri.

"If the map is accurate," Meri said, "then we should take," he paused and looked ahead, "that path," pointing to the left. A small waft of air breezed through the cave tunnel, smelling faintly of fresh air. Meri smiled. "I may not be a tracker, but what I've learnt tells me to follow my nose."

"Alright." Pyro turned and led Bale down the indicated tunnel, the horse's hooves clopping and echoing on the stone. The mice in the bullseye lanterns at his sides squeaked slightly.

"It's okay," Rayel muttered to her horse as she led him through the tunnels, more to herself than to Cheiron. She patted his nose absently as her eyes raked the surroundings, as if expecting to find some sort of message on the walls. Her sense of unease, which had plagued her since she had met up with this odd half-dragon, was now at its height.

Knowing that her instincts were often wrong, especially as of late, the knight concentrated on the rocks in the walls. Quietly she recited the meditation of the stone, a simple prayer meant to bring peace to the mind.

"Let me be as the stone in the mountain, content to be one of the whole. Let me support those about me and protect the way for those who walk the path. Let me be at peace. Amen."

It wasn't an ordained prayer of the order, so she kept her voice as low as possible. It was an old one, one she had heard in her youth in her backwoods homeland.

When this was all over, she would return to her birthplace. She had no idea whether her family was still alive or not. It would be nice to tell them she was okay, and see how they had done.

Rayel grinned for a moment. It would be nice to know whether her father had ever grown that giant turnip he'd always dreamed of. Perhaps he had finally won a prize in that stupid fair. Maybe her brother had finally stopped mooning after that village girl Rosalind and settled down with someone less empty headed.

It would be nice to see home again.

"It's okay," she muttered to Cheiron, still petting his nose, "everything's going to be okay."

Pyro absently stroked Bale's neck as they progressed through the tunnels. He had been with her from her very first adventure not too long ago. He was her father's old adventuring horse, though Pyro didn't know where he was now. Her human mother had just said it was his elven wanderlust, though Pyro never understood why he left without Bale.
