I'm honestly trying to control my cursing, but this has got to be said. I know there are some good, kind hearted people who live in the same town as me (I know I'm one of those people) but if somebody does an hr of hard labor for you by shoveling your driveway that has almost a FOOT OF SNOW ON IT then it's common kindness to at least thank them for the hard work that they've done.
This happened to me today. We have gotten over a foot of snow within the last day. There are blizzard alram things on our t.v.'s and all over the radio, so much that it's rediculous. This is the first time in the 14-15 years I have lived here that we have gotten this much snow.
Back to the main topic, I decided that since work got cancelled today that I would go out and try and do an honest days work shoveling driveways. I do the first one, and the guy was laid off but offers me a hot drink and a thank you.
I have no problem with that, and it warmed me that he was kind enough to offer me a drink.
The second one I did the drive way slanted at a high angle so I was slipping all over the place, even fell a couple of times. I let the guy know I'm done, and without even a thank you he slams the door in my face. It took me an hr to an hr and 15 mins to do his driveway, and I walked away feeling angry and hurt.
I have the satisfation of knowing I did a lot of work, so I got a work out, and that's calories burned. I also did something that I honestly wasn't even expecting to get paid to do, but to not even get a damn thank you?!
I know it's hard for people, and I know the economy is s**t, but come on?! Not even a damn thank you for someone who busted her butt off to try and make life a little easier for this person and his household! I am very disapointed in not only him, but all the other people out there who are just as rude and mean as he is!

yeah, some people really don't appreciate help, but maybe sometimes they think they don't need it. maybe the guy was actually looking forward to shovelling his driveway for some reason that we aren't sure of. did you go up to his door and ask to shovel his driveway first? he may feel that there was an ulterior motive behind it if you just started shovelling without asking first, and so decided to be rude and not say anything so he wouldn't have to pay...or something. there could be plenty of reasons, but i do agree that he was certainly a jerk about it.
the climate must be out of whack O.o even if there's a snowstorm threatening to blow in within the next couple days, other strange places seem to be getting a lot more snow than my area...and we usually have at least more than a light coating about this time of year (and by light coating, i mean that you can still clearly see the grass underneath).
but getting back to the point, don't get too disheartened Sachan *hugs* there's always gonna be jerks who don't appreciate the work people do, whether they get paid for it or not, and there's gonna be people who love it. just keep the nice people in mind and you can ignore the jerks ^^

I've come to realize that if you're going to do manual labor for other people, not to expect anything in return. Because the majority of the human population are ungrateful. By not expecting anything though, you don't get hurt in the end. Also, by doing this, when someone DOES say thank you, or as the previous home owner did by giving you something warm to drink, you feel a hundred times better.
So instead of expecting anything, I just concentrate on the good work that I did, calories burned, labor that others can no longer do for themselves, that sort of thing, and I feel better, because I contributed in my own way. :> I'm so glad I don't have to shovel snow, the most shoveling I have done are those darn leaves in the backyard. And let me tell you, fishing those leaves out of the pool in my backyard is hard work (I use the big nets, gets it done faster.) I can only picture myself shoveling snow... and I probably would just go out there with a hair dryer until someone came along and helped me. razz I'm blonde, I could totally pull it off.

In Memory of Soldier A yeah, some people really don't appreciate help, but maybe sometimes they think they don't need it. maybe the guy was actually looking forward to shovelling his driveway for some reason that we aren't sure of. did you go up to his door and ask to shovel his driveway first? he may feel that there was an ulterior motive behind it if you just started shovelling without asking first, and so decided to be rude and not say anything so he wouldn't have to pay...or something. there could be plenty of reasons, but i do agree that he was certainly a jerk about it. the climate must be out of whack O.o even if there's a snowstorm threatening to blow in within the next couple days, other strange places seem to be getting a lot more snow than my area...and we usually have at least more than a light coating about this time of year (and by light coating, i mean that you can still clearly see the grass underneath). but getting back to the point, don't get too disheartened Sachan *hugs* there's always gonna be jerks who don't appreciate the work people do, whether they get paid for it or not, and there's gonna be people who love it. just keep the nice people in mind and you can ignore the jerks ^^ Yeah, I did knock on his door first. I mean, I know I'm 23 and walking door to door asking to shovel their walk is kinda wierd, but I've been doing this since I was a kid. I know the knacks of the trade (if you know what I mean). I know where the best houses are in my folks neighborhood, but this year Toboe and I moved in with koopabrat and her family so I had no idea about the houses and how the families acted. And quite honestly, I should of just done what Hisa said. I shouldn't expect anything at all. I shouldn't of expected a thank you, but I did. Maybe it's because I always say thank you when it comes to someone dong something for me. I don't know. Toboe mentioned both of what you suggested D and Kira. By the time he got home I was cooled down enough to stop him from doing it. I didn't want a fight to break out because of the guy being a complete jerk. I do hope he gets the kind of karma that's coming to him though! *hugs everyone*
