Better to be a Samurai than to be a Ninja during Japan's feudal era. The former were military aristocrats and social elites, while the latter were assassins and pariahs of the society.
There has to be price for everything. Samurais are bound by a code of honor and expected to set an example for others. There are samurais who chose death in favour of protecting their honor, but that represents only a fraction of the entire group. They were just as practical as any other common warrior when it comes to battle.
Edit:
Samurais wore armor that consisted of mainly bamboo, but the chest plate was often one solid piece of metal, and metal plates were attached to arm and neck segments.
