“I do not know,” replied Xiu truthfully. “Hazeline says that umm…the soul I possess; a Pi Yao, used to have long fangs but…we are not sure if…these fangs are because of that influence or because…recently I am capable of drinking blood…,” admitted Xiu truthfully with a slightly embarrassed look regarding his diet. “And…no, they do not hurt. Not me at least…,”
At the mention of Zave’s scar, Xiu gave the other a thoughtful glance. He had been pondering about that mark Zave had but did not know how to bring the subject up for fear of offending the other. But now that Zave himself had talked about it, Xiu guessed it was alright for him to do so as well. Carefully, of course.
“You were born with that scar, Zave?” enquired Xiu curiously. “That’s odd…do you know…why?”
“And no, I did not see anything weird in the office, Zave,” said Xiu looking puzzled, “Was I supposed to? To tell the truth, I was kept rather busy by Doctor Kyou during my stay here,”
------------------------------
Hazeline listened to what Tsu had to say regarding their options and was a little disappointed. Well, she should have known better than to get her hopes up with stuff from fiction. In real life, there were always consequences. The guardian folded her arms across her chest as though deep in thought. “Yes, but Xiu; he does not get bloodlust if he drinks blood before he starves himself, Doctor. But that’s where the problem lies as well. He’s a good raevan and drinking blood simple tears him apart. He does not want to drink blood and in doing so, he starves and bloodlust sets in,” said Hazeline with a frown at her frei’s predicament.
“Instead of trying to suppress his bloodlust, isn’t there a way to substitute the blood, Doctor?” asked Hazeline hopefully. “Something that Xiu could take in place of blood should the time come for him to begin feeding in that manner again?”

Zave looked thoughtful for a moment, weighing out the right question to ask. Finally seeming to make up his mind, he just said "Well... which came first? The fangs or the new diet of yours? Maybe that would give you a better hint as to which one it was?"
Looking over at the other raevan's embarrassed state, Zave added "I'm not sure if it makes a big difference... but I don't think that you'd ever be considered a monster. You seem to care too much about not hurting the others. Sure you may look different from the others and some claim that's what makes a monsters, but I think the real ones are the people that are able to hurt others without thinking about it... just because they can." Hopefully Xiu realized he was saying this because he truly felt this way and not just as a means to cheer up the other.
Feeling the scar along his forehead carefully Zave looked a bit sheepish. "I don't know much about this scar, to be honest. It's weird huh? I just know I was born with it. Also that the weather is bad when it hurts... or when I get headaches. But I guess a lot of people have that happen, so it's not a big deal." Forcing a weak smile he tried to think of other things to talk about.
"So what exactly is a Pi Yao anyway?"
------------------------------------------
Tsu scratched his chin as he looked down at Xiu's file. White blood with the soul of a Pi Yao. That was going to be an interesting problem to try and solve. "I understand you want the best for your raevan." Tsu started out addressing Hazeline finally "There is one other long shot, but I need to know what Xiu's previous food source was. After I have that information, I'll tell you the last long shot there is, if it's possible to use. Otherwise, things will have to work out naturally... one way or another."

‘The fangs but…the diet followed soon after,” said Xiu quietly, recalling the incident vividly. “I was shocked, Zave. I had not expected such a thing to occur and well, let’s just say that it was good that Rivever found me when he did. You do know Rivener, the Sigel right?”
“And…do you really think so?” said Xiu softly after he had heard Zave’s words. “Thank you, Zave. Thank you,” said Xiu gratefully. The incident had certainly damaged the frei’s self esteem a little; what with being called a demon by the housekeeper when she realized that the white frei will be drinking blood for the duration of the Hungry Ghost Month. Apart for that, Xiu had also attacked Dr. Kyou on instinct during the Fel Outbreak incident…
But before the white frei had much time to dwell upon past recollections, Zave had spoken about his scar. Xiu waved his own thoughts away and listened attentively as the other spoke and nodded at Zave’s reasoning. It made sense in a way. Xiu recalled hearing the elderly complain of aching joints whenever the weather changes. However, Xiu found it odd that Zave was born with a scar but chose to not comment on it. “A Pi Yao? Well err…they are luck bringing guardian creatures for the most part I guess,” said Xiu looking sheepish. Despite knowing the origins of his soul, the white frei had yet to do much research on it save from what he heard from Hazeline and what could be found with a few simple clicks on the internet. “Hazeline came across the Pi Yao (it felt odd talking about his soul in this manner) in a temple just before it was torn down. Apparently she got the Pi Yao’s soul with minimal effort,” said Xiu with a slight shake of his head, indicating his own disbelief. “Naturally I am…a little puzzled myself but I guess I guess the err…Pi Yao must have had his reasons…,” said the white frei with a small shrug.
“So umm…what do I for the X-Ray?”
--------------------------------------------
Hazeline nodded. She understood the Doctor’s predicament. Dr. Tsu would be trying his best to solve this problem but Hazeline was aware the Doctor was no miracle worker as well. “Xiu usually feeds of innocence, as he is doing now. You can tell by the colour of his eyes and rune. They turn red when he consumes blood,” said Hazeline as she touched the side of her eyes with her hands. “But with regards to the innocence, he sorts of …I don’t know, I guess his rune absorbs it when a person comes within its range. At least, that’s what I am led to believe,” said Hazeline to the Doctor.

"Oh right... the X-Ray." Zave shook his head, finally after he stopped touching his forehead unconsciously. He was supposed to be working, but it seemed like talking with the other was a lot more distracting. He was still curious about the other, and wanted to do what he could to help with the whole lack of confidence the other felt over feeding off of blood. "Well... for one thing, you will need to put this vest on, to keep your rune from shining too brightly and causing problems in reading the information we need. After that, you'll stand by a machine and need to keep really still. We'd like a picture while your fangs are still grown out. Don't worry, the machine does most of the work. Just close your eyes and try not to think too much about things."
After helping Xiu into the leaden vest, Zave made sure that the x-ray film was put in place and moved over to a room connected to the X-ray machine. "I'll be over here if you need anything. It should be quick and painless though." After he finished the explanation, Zave disappeared into the next room, but there was still a window for observation in case something came up. With a slight humming, the X-Ray spun to life. As Xiu floated there, the machine made a full pass around his head, before another loud click sound resounded across the room. "Okay... the X-Ray itself is done, so now we'll just have to wait a bit for the film to develop. See? That wasn't so hard, was it?"
Zave quietly sat down searching for something to talk about. There were still a lot of questions he had about his scar himself... so he didn't really feel comfortable talking about that in front of the other, just in case the information he guessed was wrong. Plus it didn't seem that Xiu was too fond of dwelling on what happened during the Hungry Ghost month. "So... uhhhh... what do you like to do in your free time?" Zave offered weakly... franticly searching to break the awkward silence. "I mean... Riv apparently has his camera. At least from what I heard from Laz... and others play video games or what not. Is there anything that you and your Hazeline do together? Or anything that you like to do?"
----------------------------------------------------------
Innocence!? Tsu nearly dropped his pen in disbelief. A cynical side of him thinking it's nothing short of a miracle that the guy hasn't starved to death already!! Thinking about this new information Tsu mused aloud, "And this diet change occurred during the Hungry Ghost month....tell me... what exactly did he come into contact with then?" Flipping through the notes in his file Tsu had taken particular notice of the essence. "I still can't help but be intrigued by the essence that you were given... white blood. There is a chance that his true feeding characteristics have emerged. In this case... I can only tell you this. You are not to treat him as a monster. I'm pretty sure he's already feeling bad enough about the situation as it is. Try and support him as best you can. Sometimes it's nothing wrong... so there isn't really a 'cure' or a 'fix all' for the things that arise from this experiment. Show him that there are things to take blood from that aren't that appalling, and if he doesn't starve himself to an extreme, then maybe, just maybe he can take a controllable amount and still retain his dignity."

Xiu flared his wings a little as the vest was placed onto him. It felt odd; having another piece of clothing added onto him like that. And the vest was rather heavy too. Xiu fingered the vest tentatively before placing himself before the X-ray machine as indicated by Zave. The other raevan had then left the room but not before assuring the white frei that the process would be quick and harmless.
There was a slight humming as the machine came to life and Xiu floated motionlessly as the machine made a scan of his head; the scanning process completed when a click was heard. Letting out his breath (Xiu hadn’t realized he was holding it in), Xiu smiled as Zave entered the room once more. “No, it wasn’t hard at all. I hardly did a thing,” said the white frei with a soft chuckle.
There was then a moment of silence as Xiu was left to his own musings. Zave however, must have found it uncomfortable as he soon broke the silence by asking Xiu what his hobbies were.
“I like reading,” said Xiu with a slight nod of affirmation. “Any books are fine although I find fictional ones more appealing than others. However, there is much that I’ve yet to read. Romance novels for a start; Hazeline has forbade me to read them until I am older,” said Xiu with a slight frown as though disagreeing with his guardian’s logic. “But that aside, what do you like to do, Zave?”
--------------------------------
Hazeline pondered Dr.Tsu’s question, tilting her head slightly as she thought about it. “Well, it’s a rather odd story, that. Apparently, during the Hungy Ghost month, there’s a change in…well, let’s just say the environment and a human’s innocence tend to form a sort of spherical shield around them, guarding them against ghostly attacks or so I am told. Apparently if Xiu feeds off the humans during this time of the year, they’d be more open to attacks. That’s what led him to starve himself in the first place and made him switch to blood drinking mode. I must say it was a…shocking event for everyone involved,” said Hazeline with a sigh.
The Doctor’s next set of advice made the guardian smile wryly. It was easier said than done. Despite her assuring people that Xiu was harmless (at least when he isn’t in blood lust mode), people (read: housekeeper) tended to treat Xiu as one might a particularly dangerous animal once they knew of his diet. Keeping Xiu’s spirit up was nothing less than a feat in some ways. Suffice to say, Hazeline was glad that the event was no longer than a month.
“I shall certainly heed that advice, Doctor,” said Hazeline as she folded her arms across her chest. “Thank you,”
Then, as though realizing how long they’d been in here, Hazeline looked at Dr. Tsu “Would there be anything else or…is this check up over, Doctor?”

Zave crossed his arms in thought... "I like to read books, too." Zave finally admitted, "But besides that I think I tend to roam around the area. Tsu finally has let me go out on my own, provided I keep in contact with him. It's kinda nice that he's starting to trust me more like that." Zave said, surrendering a small smile. There have been some rough times with Tsu, but the guy does have his good points as Xiu has shown him too.
"I'm sure that everything will be alright with you though." Zave said once more, not sure who he was trying to reassure. "There is one thing that kinda worries me. Have you been eating properly? I know it must have been hard to feed off innocence... and for someone like yourself... it seems like blood was even harder for you to eat... but you have to take in something. If you don't... things will just get worse for you... and I don't want to see you get hurt. Let's face it... in the world... you can be a good person... and you can follow the rules to a certain extent, but neither is absolute. Sometimes there are rules that we can't always follow... or else we get hurt. Or sometimes following the rules doesn't make us good. There's a lot of gray out there... and it's hard to say anyone is completely innocent. I guess though... as long as you try to not take freedom away from others... then you're still a good person. Try to remember that, no matter what they say... you are you. And you are a good... erm... raevan." Zave looked down a little flustered and said nothing more.
Luckily... there was a rapping on the door to break the silence as Tsu and Hazeline came filing in.
----------------------------------
Tsu eyes grew wider as he glanced down at his watch. A lot of time had passed since when the two had first gotten here. He still had some reports to write up that night, too.... This was no time for idle chit chat about what happened in the past. Forcing himself to maintain professionalism, Tsu sucked in his breath silently and thought about it. "The X-Ray scan should be done by now. We can head over there and pick up your charge there. That should finish it up for today as well. It'll take a bit for the film to develop, so I'll just go ahead and mail you the results in a couple days. Honestly though, I don't see the fangs really hurting him physically, and I get the feeling that they're growing to be a part of him. If that's the case, he's just going to have to learn to live with them. I'm a doctor, not a dentist after all.
Leading her down the hall he walked towards the door leading to the changing area for the X-ray machines. He rapped on the door sharply twice before entering. "Sorry to interrupt here... but I think you're ready to go." Tsu said brightly. "As I already mentioned to Hazeline, the film from the X-ray will take some time to develop, so we'll be in contact in a couple days. If you have any questions later about what I tell you, then feel free to ask them as they arise. In any case... there's nothing more we can do for you today, I'm afraid. On the plus side there seems to be nothing wrong with you."

“I-I see…,” said Xiu trying not to look too guilty. Freedom was something he had acquired at a young age. What with her career in mind and all, Hazeline had been quite lax in her guardianship and had deemed Xiu old enough to head out on his own when she knew that he was able to detect a person’s malicious thoughts. Xiu had really never given this freedom much thought until he had met Rivener. Apparently it was not normal for guardians to let their freis run loose; even to feed. Dr. Tsu seemed to think so too; judging by how happy Zave looked when stating that he could finally go out on his own provided that he kept in touch.
Which was amusing, really…
Hazeline had told Xiu that he should only call her if something terrible happened. She was a firm believer in “No news is good news.” Xiu decided to not let Zave in on this. There was no point in mindless bragging and it might prove to be counter productive; ending with Dr. Tsu giving Hazeline a lecture on responsibility or something. Instead, Xiu turned his attention to the next part of Zave’s speech; which, all in all, was rather deep. Impressed, the frei listened attentively as Zave gave his opinion on morals and what was probably the definition of ‘good’, ending his speech with acknowledging Xiu as a ‘good raevan’. The white frei could feel his cheeks reddening slightly. Apparently Zave felt the same way as the blue eyed frei was keeping his eyes firmly locked onto the floor.
The sudden rapping of the door was a welcomed one and Xiu couldn’t help but let out a sigh of relief as the Doctor and Hazeline filed in.
---------------------------------------------
Hazeline nodded. That sounded reasonable. Inwardly, the guardian was rather about what the results of the X-ray might yield. Falling into step behind the Doctor as he led the way to the X-ray room, Hazeline mused over what had taken place in the office.
When Dr. Tsu opened the door after giving it two sharp raps, the silence between Zave and Xiu were lost to Hazeline as Dr. Tsu repeated to Xiu what he had told Hazeline; that the film would be ready in a couple of days time and the results would then be mailed to them. Then as if on cue, Hazeline nodded and stepped forward. “Thank you, Doctor. I shall certainly follow your advice and it was nice meeting you,” said Hazeline looking at Xiu with a ‘We are going home now’ look.
Xiu nodded. “Thank you Doctor Tsu, Zave,”
Then turning to Zave, Xiu gave the stormy raevan a smile. “I really enjoyed our talk, Zave. Perhaps we could meet again someday? Without the hassle of the check up of course,” said Xiu with a soft chuckle. “ I’ve yet to know what kind of books you like after all,”
“I’ll be glad to drop you off at the lab whenever you err…boys would like to meet up,” said Hazeline with a smile. “But for now, Xiu, we have really got to go,”
“Right,” said Xiu as he floated towards his guardian. “See you around next time then. Goodbye,”

ONE WEEK LATER...
A flat envelope from Lab 305 was delivered to Hazeline's home. In it was a letter that Tsu had scrawled hastily and a copy of the x-rays they had taken from the check up.
The letter read simply
Dear Hazeline,
I took the liberties to have a fellow doctor (or rather a dentist) take a gander at these x-rays. He confirmed my suspicions that there is no danger to Xiu with the location of these teeth, just that he's never seen anyone with teeth like that before. I danced around what it was about with him, as that just seemed to be more of a hassle to tell the truth... but in any case. Since there is no real signs of danger for the fangs to be there, I will go ahead and suggest that you leave them be. They may become helpful to Xiu in the future.
Now, for the bad news. Since Xiu has started to drink blood once, I can go ahead and say that there isn't going to be a way to stop that. Since he's growing still... the body has a habit of remembering what it did to get nutrients. It's kind of what makes up the instincts in us. Anyway, there is no easy way to unlearn instinct... it's there naturally. Even if there was a way to force it out of a person/creature/raevan, there could be other things that it must lose in the process. For that, I recommend that you don't let him stop feeding. The process of forcing himself not to eat causes shocks to the body and then the blood lust is more prone to appear. With that knowledge in grasp, it's up to you how you use it.
If you have more questions, or if Xiu feels like visiting Zave at any point, feel free to drop by.
Tsu.
