I'm going to be taking it tomorrow in my hometown. I'll be taking the 4-kyuu even though I'm in my 3rd year of Japanese. I just want to ensure that I'll pass so I can include this in college applications.
Is anyone else taking it? What level? If you have already taken it in the past, what was it like? Did passing the JLPT give you any benefits career-wise?

I have no idea what you're talking about! But it sounds really interesting! Can you explain what exactly it is for those of us not in the know? Good luck, by the way!

Well, when Japan opened up its work force and universities (mainly universities) to foreigners, they had no way to measure how fluent they were in Japanese. So after a while, they came up with the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). Also, if you want to study in Japan, you do need to be certified to a certain extent, and you can do so by taking the JLPT. But I think universities require you to take the one of the more difficult levels.
The test then got around and is taken all over the US and in other countries like China and England. A lot of college and high school students end up taking the test to see how well they're getting along with the language.
Basically, the JLPT is the japanese version of the TOEFL.
The test levels go from:
4-kyuu (Level 4 - beginner) 3-kyuu (Level 3 - beginner intermediate) 2-kyuu (Level 2 - advanced intermediate) 1-kyuu (Level 1 - advanced)
The test is filled with an array of kanji, vocabulary, and grammar and includes a listening comprehension portion.
EDIT: The JLPT is actually strictly for educational purposes, upon quick research. The BJPT (Business Japanese Proficiency Test) is geared towards use of Japanese in a business environment.

Wow, what a coincidence, I was learning about that yesterday! How expensive though I mean... If you're not in one of those states that gives out the test. There was only a handful in the US that I saw. o.o You'd have to fly to another test site! Yow.

I guess I don't have to take it until I graduate with my BA in Japanese. Best of luck though! heart

Hey! I just realized that this is what my friend was talking about! We went to high school together and now he's in Japan teaching English. He apparently took the Level 2 test.
