I've noticed alot of talk on the forum as of recent about help with practice techniques, regimes etc. So I figured that I'd post up my current regime, as to compare and improve with the fine guitarists of this guild.
07:40 - 08:00: Stretches and warm up 08:00 - 09:00: Scale & Chord practice 09:00 - 10:00: Chop Builders / GST 10:00 - 11:00: End of Chop builders & AFT / AFT 11:00 - 12:00: University Band work 12:00 - 13:00: University Solo work 13:00 - 14:00: Big song for the week 14:00 - 15:00: Technique practice 15:00 - 16:00: Piano Practice 16:00 - 17:00: Piano Practice 17:00 - 18:00: Songs & Jam 18:00 - 19:00: Composition 19:00 - 20:00: Composition 20:00 - Onwards: Freestyle (when guitar is concerned, usually involves some ear practice, more scale and chord practice, songs, jamming and composition)
A note: I aim to do this everyday. Obviously it doesn't all always happen at the right times, or even all of it on occasional days (Let down). I have Uni work and Compositions and other crap to get in from time to time. This is a general outline though to aim for. the times with '/' alternate daily.

My guitar practice is all over the place. Mainly because I get home from college at different times each day plus I have so many coursework deadlines for christmas. I'd love to start learning to play the piano cool

I'm the same with Uni, but like I said this is an outline for the day. I figure it's best to set more than you can always get. That way your always going to be doing as much as you can, instead of wasting time on Youtube and alcohol and PS2's and whatever you kids fraternise with these days.

Lethkhar How the hell do you have that much time? eek
I am infact made from the purest awesome...
No like I explained, it's an outline for the day. It does get broken. For example, I only did one hour of composition yesterday because I've an assignment I wanted done and out of the way for Uni. I like to set this amount for a few reasons:
1) Anytime I have nothing to do, I have something to 2) By setting an amount that is a challenge in itself to complete, I ensure I'm doing 100% of what I can do, so any missed compositions or projects (current tally, 0, I thankyou blaugh ) is not down to lazyness or anything, it's simply something I could not get done. 3) I like to advance. I don't see the point in remaining on one plateau for longer than I need to.
MAKQ: That's what Jamming and composition is, to a degree at least. Jamming is basically that, just going for it. Composition is work pieces, personal song writing. Focused jamming basically.

If you're going to college, there is no way you're managing to go to all of your classes, eat, and do homework in just 3 hours a day. Even if you don't sleep more than 5 hours a day, it's a stretch. Do you go to a conservatory?

A conservatory? Those building attachments over 30's are going Bananas for recently?
I sleep for 3-5 hours tops. Uni work, I just do an hour a day plus lectures obviously (on those days I don't do everything...like...I...said). I eat on the go, good food can be very quick to make and most of my projects need me to be practicing and writing too.
It's not really a stretch because... Like... I... said... it's a general outline for a day. On a slow day, i'll get it all done plus. On a heavy day, I might not get everything done but the fact it's there means that the absolute maximum is getting done, because I'm trying.
I don't mean to be sarcastic, by the way. I'm just stressing the point that I have said this. If I'm not explaining myself correctly please inform me and I'll do my best to explain again.

There's some logic in making plans for the best- and worst-case scenario; having them available is better than none, I guess.

Well, I must say I guess I can respect your dedication. I guess I'm just not dedicated enough to let my guitar-playing be the driving force in my life, where I try to even cut down on eating time so I'll have more time to practice. They say that it takes about 10,000 hours of practice to master an instrument. At the rate you're going, you should be an absolute master in a matter of a few years. That's really cool. That said, I would like to make the point that only getting 3-5 hours of sleep is probably hurting you more than helping. There have been numerous studies that show that getting enough sleep is essential to best retain knowledge/muscle memory that you learned during the day. If you practice a ton but don't get any sleep, you'll actually progress slower than if you had used some of that practice time to get enough sleep. I don't say this to criticize you; I'm just saying that you're clearly very dedicated to this, so if I can help to maximize the benefit you're getting from practicing then it will make me feel better.

I'll give you three guesses what i study...
That's right, Equine studies.
No, music, obviously, and your completely right on the studies, but your forgetting one fact. Not everyone naturally needs 8 hours of sleep. I, for one, never have. I've tried to 'get more sleep' because it's healthier but I'm in perfectly good shape. I have a little work out that I do regularly, I eat well, and most would describe me as too relaxed in my attitude so it's not stressed related. I have a completely stable sleep pattern too, unless I choose to wreck it but that's another story of indulgence and debauchery.
In short, it's not forced, it's just how I role. The advice is much appreciated though, and I hope it helps other people (please read top of thread).
Also, your compliments, you flatter me. YAY Compliments!
