Chapter 1
"Dalla Mamma! Dal Babbo! Da Suzana! Scriverò ogni due settimane." (By Mom! By Dad! By Suzana! I will write every two weeks.) said Letana as she headed towards the gate that would lead to her new life. "Dal mio tesoro! La mangia le frutta e la verdura, oh la sono sicuro lei desidera fare questo? Possiamo annullare sempre il volo. Lei è realmente sicuro che lei desidera andare per tutto il tragitto verso l'America per il liceo? Oh perché lei non rimarrà in casa con me? " (By my darling! Eat you fruits and vegetables, oh are you sure you wish to do this? We can always cancel the flight. Are you really sure you wish to go all the way to America for high school? Oh why won't you stay home with me?) cried her mother. "La mamma che desidero per questo. Questo è un'esperienza che servirà me bene nella vita. Prometto sarò buono, e conserverò così posso venire a casa per Natale! Da!" (Mom I wish for this. This is an experience that will serve me well in life. I promise I will be good, and I will save up so I can come home for Christmas! By!) she said over her shoulder as she walked away.
Letana left Italy, her family, and her old life behind. Her new life in America would come with many wonders, and one of them would be meeting a girl named Zoe.

"Il porto 33 volo A9, sopra il volo atlantico a New York, il trasferimento al volo 83 porto B6 all'aeroporto di O'Hare, trasporta da lì a Harwood." (Port 33 flight A9, over atlantic flight to New York, transfer to flight 83 port B6 to O'Hare airport, bus from there to Harwood.) Letana reminded herself as she boarded her plane. "Puah, perché l'aereo non può volarmi appena sopra Harwood e salto fuori con tutte le cose e col paracadute giù al mio appartamento? Farebbe la mia vita così molto più facile!" (Ugh, why can't the plane just fly me over Harwood and I jump out with all my stuff and parachute down to my apartment? It would make my life so much easier!) she complained as she shoved her two bags in the overhead compartment. "Look Mommy! That girl has a black cape on, is she a bad guy?" asked a little American boy who was sitting in the seat next to Letana. "No sweet-heart, but she might be a decibel of Satin so try not to make eye-contact." said the mother. "Ah così piacevole per vedere che lasciano la sporcizia come lei sui voli, se gli incidenti di aereo ci sarà poi qualche meno come lei nel mondo!" (Ah so nice to see they let filth such as you on flights, if the plane crashes then there will be a few less like you in the world!) said Letana to the mother and son in a voice that sounded very pleasant. "He he, Mommy she sounds funny!" said the little boy. "And she looks funny to, when you grow up be sure to stay away form people like that ok?" "O.K! But her cape is cool, so can I have one?" "No, thats another funny thing about her, I don't want you to be anything like her, promise?" "Promise!" The rest of the flight continued in this manner, with the mother pointing out flaws in Letana and the son promising never to be like her. When the flight was finally over Letana turned to the two and said, "Well, it has been a pleasure sitting next to the two of you. I hope we never meet again." In her mind she laughed at the astonished face of the mother as she took her bags and exited the plane. "Forse essere nell'America non sarà come annoiando mentre ho pensato. Se tutte le persone sono qui questo stupido poi potrei diventare anche il loro presidente!" (Maybe being in America won't be as boring as I thought. If all the people here are this stupid then I may even become their president!) She toyed with this thought as she boarded the flight to O'Hare and sat down next to a prep dressed in pink.
