I've been experimenting with improv in D major, but I want a good set of backing chords that would fit with the bends and slides im doing, sort of like a psuedo-sitar style. And if you have any suggestions for more darker sounds I'm all ears.

I strongly suggest going to a local library and seeing what they have in the music section. I once found a book on folk songs from different cultures, and tried a lot of the chord progressions in there. Some were very unusual and sounded horrible on guitar, some sounded great though.

If I was trying to approximate Indian music on guitar, my first bet would be E -> F/E. The drone seems to make it sound pretty sweet, but I really don't know all that much about their musical system. Too many notes. sad
