I thought we could use a new topic of discussion, so how about Gackt? He's a j-rock artist, a bit Bowie-ish in style. Anyone else like him?

My best friend is obsessed with him, so I at least know who you're talking about.
And the reason he's Bowie-ish in style is because Gackt has said in one place or another that he was inspired by early glam-rock-Bowie. After the seventies, though, Bowie's glam-rock persona stifled down to some fairly ugly suits (but hot on him! ;D.)
In fact, all those little male j-rockers you see wearing women's garments, look up who inspired them and I'll betcha Bowie's name is on the list.

Mana from Malice Mizer is a total Bowie rip off. I used to really like Malice Mizer and Moi Dix Mois but know they come off as a bit too contrived

DecadentLotus alice from weirdland Mana from Malice Mizer is a total Bowie rip off. [I don't feel like quoting the photos] confused I sincerely doubt those are the only photographs ever of those two people. I also think that those drag-dressing J-Rockers are copycats of something that Bowie started a long time ago, but I wouldn't call them 'rip-offs'. I won't start hating them until they start saying that they were the "first" or their fans say that they were the "first", 'cause that would just be wrong. Bowie was the first main-stream glam rocker, and he deserves all the credit.

By all means, go and try to find any picture where they look anything alike rolleyes And by the way no JRocker ever claimed to be the "first." X Japan was the first real visual kei band in Japan, and they're pretty open about who influenced their visual style, namely Bowie and KISS.

I've listened to several of his songs and I honestly can't see what people find so fantastic about him. I can't stand his voice - it's way too gutteral and icky sounding, and I don't really like songs that are in other languages, whether you could look up the lyrics or not. They just aren't my cup of tea, and they never will be. I'll stick with the God of Glam, Mr. Bowie, thanks. (:

Please know that I'm not implying that anybody is ripping off of anybody else, but I think that they were most likely referring to Bowie's "Man Who Sold the World" era-look, or maybe the "Hunky Dory" era... both certainly show their influences much more than "Aladdin Sane" (in fact, I think that particular era is the worst example one could pick... perhaps with the exception of "Diamond Dogs"). But again, I don't think anybody ripped anybody off in this case. The influence Bowie had on other rockers is certainly a reality, but I think it's a good thing. Personally, I wish Western glam rock hadn't died with the 80's after its degeneration into hair bands. Personally, I think Gackt is OK, but I find that Malice Mizer is easier on the eyes than on the ears wink In other words, I'd rather look at pictures of them than just listen to their music.

I liked some of his stuff in Malice Mizer, he was probably the most charasmatic of their lead singers.
Although I like Tetsu the best

I'm not too sure who Gackt is. >>
I have just a few Idols... David, Billy, and some old school slayer-ish music.
Doesn't really fit, but that's okay>>
