It's not a hoax, it's a misinterpretation of what happens when the Mayan calender runs out.

The mayan calender is not a usual calender

It's a glyph, not a book.

Beyond that are the years in the years and beyond that are the "centuries"

Aztec centuries are 52 years long, hence the quotes.

The Calender also acted as a Almanac, showing what days were days the gods would be favorable and everything would go well, and what days when things would go horribly wrong.

So taking into account when Europeans discovered Mayans and figuring out what day the Mayan calender was on... the Europeans figured out the Mayan Calender would run out on December 21st, 2012.

On that day, the calender terminates and the only glyph relevant to time is the death head in the center.

On December 22nd 2012, the calender starts at day 1, year 1, century 1.

However the Mayan civilization collapsed do to European influence before it was known what happens on the 21st.

So people have been scaring themselves stupid thinking that the ancient Mayan gods will be extremely pissed off at the world and cause a major catastrophe on a biblical level.

Also, I'd like to add more onto what Neuf has shared, which is all 100% bonafide correct. As a young teenager, I had an avid interest in the Aztecs, Omlecs and Mayans for a few years. In that time I learnt a lot about this subject, attending university-level lectures and the like.

Whilst little is known about the Mayan beliefs of the end of the world, many people are willing to slot the Aztecs into this void, as there is no doubt that the Aztec religion is an offshoot of the Mayan. And besides, we know much more about the Aztecs.

Currently, according to the Aztecs, we are in the age of Olin ("it moves"), the Sun of Movement, the fifth sun, created by the combine powers of the gods and bloodletting from Quetzacoatl's loins, in Teotihuacan, the City of the Gods. The previous four suns and four earths were aligned with the four elements. These elements was involved with the end of the world, by floods, volcanic eruptions, tornados and mountain avalanches depending on which Sun it was. Hence, it will not be Fire, Water, Air or Earth which kills us, so don't worry about them.

We can also translate their word "movement" as "vibration", so it's likely that 2012 would happen with earthquakes or, sticking to the original translation, via strikes from meteorites.

An important note: It is a common misconception that the end of the world will lead to a new one. This is wrong. The Mayans and Aztecs had no belief about what will happen after 2012. There is no "2013". Many websites are happy to talk about how there will be some race of giants or something on the "new" Earth, but apparently this is it. Earth will not regenerate as the gods already gave up too much power restoring it last time. So long, life!

Remember - this is all mesoamerican religion. Why you believe this, I do not know. If you believe this, why don't you believe that the sun will only come up if a human sacrifice is performed daily, or that the gods will destroy humanity if we don't smash all our crockery and fetch holy fire every 52 years?

Every year there are millions of prophecies about armegeddon. The chance were that ONE would sound slightly possible. It's the same reasoning (or lack thereof) behind horoscopes.
