LOG 1

It was the beginning. She had been created. Her life had begun on the snowy mountaintops. She turned to find another just like her beside her. She knew without asking that it was her sister and that her sister’s name was Lenneth.

Her eyes looked across the meadow. Two figures moved toward them. Her heart beat wildly as he walked toward her. He had been made for her. Made to love her…

As our eyes focused on him, she saw his stray…stray to her sister’s. Her racing heart faltered as she saw the look he gave Lenneth.

Her eyes strayed over to the other male, the brother of the one meant for her and his eyes were locked with her sister’s-they had eyes only for each other.

She cleared her throat thinking that maybe the one who was meant for her was confused, but his eyes did not falter. He stared on at Lenneth.

***
Arwen breathed deeply as she awoke. She was sweating, her hair was damp with moisture. Getting up, she wandered into the cool night air. She had lost her only chance at love. A being created to love only her, and even he could not love her.

Wading out into the lake nearby, she let the cold water go over her. Going beneath the surface, she let her mind rest. Resurfacing, she washed up and made her way to the bank.

She heard a sound. It was subtle but distinct on the wind. She moved slowly, as if she had not heard a thing.

“Stop pretending.” Yongnian stepped out of the forest. “We both know that you heard me.”

Arwen smiled faintly, “But I didn’t know it was you.”

“Why are you out here alone?”

“I like to walk alone.”

Yongnian scrunched his face oddly, “Why did you join us?”

Arwen’s cheeks flushed. “Would you rather I leave?”

“No, but I question why a pony born to rule would allow another to rule her.”

Arwen shrugged her shoulders. “I’m done walking now. Goodnight.” Walking by him, she headed back to bed.

LOG 2

Yongnian watched as Arwen walked by him. She was visibly irritated at him. It had been rude to ask her why she had come to them-most ungentlemanly. But at times like these, he often found himself asking embarrassing questions. It came from being around Nite Owl too long.

Turning, he watched Arwen saunter off toward their home in a pissed of manner. He wondered idly what was bothering her. He liked to know how things worked. There was something odd about her….

In Yongnian’s mind, he could see things like a blueprint. There were lines connecting to other lines showing how lives were intermingled. But her life was oddly devoid of lines, of ties to others. She was an island in the midst of a vast uncharitable ocean.

Rubbing his chin, he wandered if a mere touch could illicit a line. No one was that unconnected. Everyone had some line, some trace to another being. He didn’t want to bother her, but his curiosity was getting the best of him. He would find out as inconspicuously as he could.

***
Arwen walked back and forth across her room. She was angry with herself. After all, what was she doing here? Why was she trying to be like others? She obviously was not. She had never been normal, had never been able to be carefree like others. She had been told time and time again what was expected of someone of her breeding…her rank. Yet, she could not bring herself to be high and mighty.

What did it matter that her past haunted her? Others had come from worse and had became great, but she had become nothing. She had never risen above what had happened. Every night the dreams came, and every night they were different. It had been so long ago that the memories had largely faded but the pain had stayed. She couldn’t remember exactly what had happened to her sister’s beloved only the final outcomes. His dead body lying there and three immobile forms looking over it.

Shaking it off, she continued to pace her cave. She despised the sniveling coward she was. Why could she not move on? Why could she not love?

LOG 3

Arwen spent a restless night trying to sleep. Her eyes were bloodshot when she finally decided to quit trying and get up. Making her way to the kitchen, she found Yongnian sitting there sipping coffee. Her brow furrowed, “Are you following me?”

Yongnian took another sip. “Not hardly. We’re in the same herd, it would come to reason we’d bump into each other.”

Arwen glared at him and moved off to fix food for herself before beginning to prepare more for the younger ones. Scarfing down her food, she washed the bowl quickly. Nimbly, she cracked the eggs and prepared breakfast for the little ones.

Yongnian was beside her smiling as he gave her a plate to scrape eggs onto. “Here, let me help you.” His hoof touched her skin gently, almost caressingly as his eyes held her own.

Her heart fluttered and instead of filling the plate, she scooped hot eggs onto his back leg.

Yongian jumped back laughing, but his face creased with an unusal look. “If you didn’t want my help, you didn’t have to burn me.”

Arwen paled, then turned her face away. “You should be glad that’s all that happened to you.”

Yongnian put his hooves on her shoulder and turned her to him. “What’s wrong?” His face held that same scrutinizing, wondering look.

Sniffling, she wiped at her nose. “I’m fine. The smoke’s just got in my face.”

He looked at her a few moments longer, but her eyes would not meet his. Gently, he tilted her chin up to look into her eyes. Deep and welling with tears, they looked into his with what he thought was fear and some other indefinable quality. Letting her go, he walked away and sat back down to finish his coffee.

As she busied herself with finishing cooking breakfast, he thought hard about what he had seen working. Small lines were being forged, but before that…there had been a longer line reaching out to touch someone. But now that someone was replaced with darkness, decay…Was it her perception or was there nothing there to remember?

LOG 4

His eyes were looking past her, toward her sister…

Arwen woke up in a cold sweat again. This was getting ridiculous. Why did her heart have to race? Why did she wake up to this dream now after all these years?

Getting out of her bed, she wandered outside and into the night air. Her mind kept dwelling on things she didn’t want to think about. She kept seeing his face….his eyes, but never looking at her.

She heard soft footsteps behind her and without turning, she knew who it was. “Why can’t you leave me alone?”

“I don’t know what you mean.” Yongnian stepped out of the shadows.

“You know damn well what I mean.” Arwen’s eyes flashed with fury. About her a soft auora glowed for a moment as thirteen daggers appeared in the air about her.”

“Going to kill me?”

Arwen’s anger faltered as she paled. As she turned to cover her face, the daggers disappeared. She could see his face…Just one of the many scenarios that her dream took on…That it had been she…

Shaking her head, she choked back the tears. “Leave me. Get away from me.”

Yongnian stepped closer. “Why can’t you trust me?”

“It’s never gotten me anywhere before.”

“Maybe you’ve trusted the wrong people.”

Arwen turned her flushed, angry face toward him. “Then if you’re so good that’s why I can’t trust you or couldn’t because I never trust anyone good!”

Yongnian looked at her keenly, “You’re irrational.”

“No,” her voice was low. “It’s the truth.”

“It doesn’t have to be.” He placed his hooves gently on her shoulders.

A confusion filled Arwen as she looked up into his earnest face. “What do you want from me?” Her voice was more a plea than a question.

“Let me see the real you.” Yongnian looked into her eyes, touched her skin waiting to feel connections streaming out toward people-for his power to work. But her links, her path remained completely blank to him.

Arwen looked up at him as she began to tremble. Her whole mind reeled as she thought of what he could mean. But something more than trust was filling her, something she’d only felt once before…
