She nodded, "Respect is earned, experience gained. You wouldn't give an apprentice a boom stick any more then you would expect a master to do the grunt work the new recruits are supposed to do. Like I said, I don't know a whole lot about the Weyr's upper echelons - few riders would even speak to me before Sharath chose me - but I'm not definitely not interested in screwing up the Weyr."
Improve, maybe, but not make dysfunctional. Sharath chirped in, the sentiment echoed by a nod from Amelia.
The goldrider laughed and shook her head, "How can I be amazing when I'm still stumbling over myself to care for Sharath? Perhaps later on I'll have reason to say that but not for now. I haven't met any other goldriders besides Luci - I grew up in the Weyr, I only know here - and Luci's not too bad. There must be several with entitlement issues though if you dislike them so much..." Her tone spoke of agreement with his comments. Those kinds of people annoyed her something fierce. She worked hard for everything she earned and while Sharath had an inborn sense of superiority, it was... well, it was heriditary and she was not incorrect to say she was of great import. (Didn't mean Amelia and Sharath butt heads as she tried to explain the subtle difference between 'I am better then you'', 'dictator', and 'leader'.)
Yours sounds much more demanding them Mine. Mine simply enjoys well worked furnishings and room structure... The gold sighed, I wish she would want more. I like an interesting room but the room is close to barren. You are lucky to have a rider who enjoys comfort. It was one of the few complaints she actually ever voiced to anyone other then Amelia. As far as she was concerned, Amelia was perfect but for her tendency towards spartan quarters. She could, and should, demand more - Sharath was not interested in staring at rocks every time they retired to their weyr.
The young gold nodded at the comment about being a messenger. That would make sense. Sharath knew she was too important to be sent on frivolous things like a messenger run and was content to remain within the Weyr and only explore as the whimsy struck but Amelia... the more Amelia learned of the outside, and how very much movement the dragons had, the more she wanted to explore - to learn and see things she'd only been told about.
Sharath flicked her tail at that thought, sparing a moment to ponder the future as she wasn't particularly interested in running about on a tour of the world thank-you.

L'thor made a vague noise in the back of his throat and shrugged. "Yes, the weyrwoman seems alright here. Things weren't so nice back at Ista; we were packed in like salted meat in a barrel and the senior said nothing, while the youngest mature junior only plotted to get more power for herself. One of the reasons I came here, couldn't stand the stupid bints any more." They were well shot of that place, he just wished more of his old friends had chosen to come along. It was better here, colder but better. At least he had nice sized quarters, and didn't have to share.
"He is quite demanding," Raith agreed with an amused rumble, "he is a creature of comfort, nearly as sensible as a dragon in that respect. Why deny yourself pleasures when you can get hold of them? Nice things are worth working for, like my bed; it's all covered with black sand from Ista's beaches. Mine and I spent a long time collecting enough and bringing it back here, and sometime I suppose we'll need to make more trips to replenish it but I like it so much better than any other covering that it's worthwhile to me." When had they last gone to Ista? She had friends there... she couldn't remember any names just now but she knew when she saw them again it would all come back. Soon, they would take another trip there soon and enjoy the heat.

Amelia blinked at that information and even Sharath lifted her head to gaze at L'thor, "That's... well, sad. I don't understand how someone could let that happen - I can't imagine anyone was particularly happy." She pursed her lips and shook her head, glancing at Sharath, we won't let that happen, will we? I'm not much of a weyrling but I know better then to force people together.
Sharath nodded, No, it will not happen. When I become Senior, the Weyr will be a shining example under our guidance. She whuffed and nosed Amelia's side then, pleased that her rider and she were of agreement - she know that she could count on Amelia to have a fresh opinion of the weyr and be more open to any change Sharath thought would be appropriate.
She turned her attention back to Rath then and tilted her head, Nice things are worth working for... You sound like Mine. It is also worthwhile to pay respect to what you admire. I do not have any collections yet - but I will soon enough. She fell quiet, pondering the green's words. Was it really all that much better to work for something? They were given what they wanted whenever they had need of it and that was how it should be, she was a gold. The thought of actually having to earn something, however, had not occured to her. It made the gold curious, what was so different about it?

"I imagine you will," Raith smiled briefly before giving a slight sigh, the colour of her eyes dulling a little. "I must admit to being a bit jealous, it would be easier if people just gave us things. I don't mind working for things... and in a way I suppose it is satisfying but sometimes it would be nice to get something special for free." She didn't actually dislike the golds for it, she didn't even care all that much that they were just handed leadership. So long as they were good dragons, fine, she was jealous but not angry like L'thor was... She wasn't sure about Sharath as yet, she seemed a proud little thing but not awful. She had time to grow into being a decent sort though. Though she was usually very quick to decide if she liked someone or not, Raith held back from a decision about the young dragon cautiously; deciding your opinion on somebody who could be the supreme ruler of the Weyr one day was important, it was not to be rushed.
"Laziness? Incompetence?" L'thor sneered briefly and shrugged. "That's what we get for picking our leaders based on dragon sex, as often as not you get an idiot with too much power, too much sense of self importance... There are some very good Weyrwomen," he allowed grudgingly after a moment, "and a lot are at least decent but that woman... I just think there should be a way to remove a leader who's doing a bad job, to actually be able to choose based on ability in the first place, that's all."

Sharath didn't really understand why you would yearn for free things. She was not a material dragon and Amelia, despite the gold's attitude, had done well not to spoil her. Really, in the grand scheme of things, her rider had refused her much more and guided her in a much stricter manner then others might have. It was a sign of her rider's strong will that they clashed like that. In the end, however, Sharath just didn't feel a need to gather things. It would all fall into place, everything would be as it should so there was no need to pine after handouts or the like. Perhaps you will get that wish one day. She spoke after a moment, responding with a noncommittal comment.
Amelia frowned, "Was she really that terrible of a Weyrwoman? If I'd grown up in a place like that..." She sighed, "And here High Reaches is, calling for dragons and other Weyrs are hoarding theirs. Tch. What I don't understand, though, is if you put people in charge based on merit alone, how do you manage the dragons? Only the golds hold that authority... and I'm certain not all golds would have their authority challenged. All you can do, really, is hope your Weyrwoman and Weyrleader are good people." She fell quiet then, considering L'thor's comments.
He was right, to be so angry if his home was as poorly managed as he made it out to be. Cramped quarters and haughty dragons were not good for comfortable living conditions. That, she knew, she would try to avoid if she came into power. She wanted to be a decent leader... not incompetent.

"Mmmh, maybe I shall." Not sharding likely. If she wanted more oil than was her ration it would need to be bought, if she wanted finer food than was standard it would have to be bought too. That was right. That was fair. She might wish that it wasn't, but she wasn't going to ignore facts, and she would try her best not to huff about them, difficult though it was at times. It was hard not to want the best of everything once you'd had it on one occasion, or it was for her anyway. Perhaps she was just greedy and selfish, the green shrugged internally, or perhaps everyone felt that way and just didn't admit it. Maybe it was a bit of both.
"It could have been worse," L'thor said as he worked the last bit of rough hide smooth and turned back to face Amelia, "but not a lot really. We weren't starving, and the outbreaks of illness we had were mostly non-fatal. Compared to how this place runs though, it seems unreal. Every rider having to share their weyr, no matter what... except the gold riders of course. The weyrwoman always made sure that she and her juniors were comfortable." That had been his perception at any rate. Perhaps his perceptions had been wrong, perhaps the golds and their riders had secretly gone without, had confined themselves to one corner of their opulent quarters out of guilt... Ahahaha. Haha. Yea, right, and next week Raith would lay a clutch of one thousand gold eggs.

Sharath nodded and fell into silence, the soothing of her itches enough to make her docile for the time being. She loved to be doted upon by Amelia... Hers was always so careful, the massage always felt good. And, she thought, she could look forward to hours of oil massages when he was older and much bigger. Rumbling with pleasure, the queen's eyes whirled soft greens and blues that echoed her tranquil state of mind.
Again, Amelia blinked. "Sharing Weyrs? Really? I wouldn't mind that so much..." She frowned, "We have our own weyr separate from the rest of the weyrlings. It gets lonely sometimes - especially since it's at the far side, away from the main chunk of bunks. At least there's room to grow here, even if the tithes can get tight." She offered a smile as she finished up with Sharath as well and patted the gold's rump. "Are you finding life better here, though? Besides taking issue with the chain of command, are you comfortable?"

Was she just playing at miss 'I'm a good leader because I care about the little people', or was she genuine? Well, he supposed it didn't really matter if she was doing it for appearances or not, that she was doing it at all was a big improvement over many gold riders. Given time to mature, and the proper training, she might turn out to be a reasonable weyrwoman. Practicality was something she seemed to have and that was a very good starting point; add in concern - or apparent concern - even for green riders and the whole thing was shaping up pretty well.
"It's too cold for my liking by half," L'thor flashed a grin, "but other than the weather I don't have any complaints to bring to your attention at the moment! The food's fine, the people are good and bad like people anywhere are, and the views are quite spectacular. All in all, despite my skepticism on how we pick our leaders, things here are good. Either the weyrwoman knows what she's doing, or she takes advice well!" Either way it didn't bother him; so long as things got done well he didn't care who was doing them.

Perhaps is was a good thing that Amelia could not read thoughts. Her sincerity was true, born from the life of an Excavator. Those of her Craft were often ignored, expected to work and work right and that was all... the bottom of the totem pole, as it were, despite the importance of their work. It had shaped the young woman before L'thor into someone who was both proud of her work and sincere in her dealing with people - she knew, first hand, that everyone was important. Some just wouldn't take the time to see it for whatever reason.
Amelia flashed an answering grin, "It does get chilly. If you heat some rocks in the fire, let them cool so they burn through a bag, then toss them in a bag you can tie the bag to your belt or put them at the foot of your bed - helps you keep warm then." She nodded as he continued, "I do love the views too... especially the spindles against a setting sun. Very pretty."
When he finished, she seemed relieved and nudged her gold to get up, "C'mon you lazy bum. You can't sleep in the middle of the hallway."
The gold rumbled annoyance but stood, acting as if it were her choice all along, I could. But I prefer our weyr, mine.
Laughing, Amelia smoothed a hand over the young queen's shoulder and shrugged, "If you say so." Turning to L'thor, she nodded a farewell, "Mmn, I should get going, I think. I have a few chores to do yet. But! If you do come across something that truly bothers you, tell me? I'll tell Luci and see if anything can be done. Okay? Thanks for the oil!~"

"Right, I won't keep you then," L'thor smiled very slightly, "and it was my pleasure... I think you have the potential to be one of the good sort of gold riders, Amelia." Her concern might have seemed a little condescending, but she probably hadn't meant it that way, he was just very swift to judge her as the rider of a large dragon. "Enjoy the rest of your day then, and thanks for the advice about the rocks, I'll give that a try."
It was a good idea, he was surprised nobody else had suggested it to him yet... Perhaps it was so sharding obvious to natives of this climate that it hadn't occurred to them that he might not already be doing it. Or perhaps his dear friends just like to chuckle over the southerner suffering; he wouldn't put it past the flight of evil-minded whers!
"Good day to you then, Sharath," Raith said with a draconic smile. "I hope your lessons get more interesting soon." She was an alright young dragon really, minor jealousy aside she thought she could come to be quite fond of Sharath if given the opportunity. Given her rider didn't seem snobby about rank, perhaps she would have the chance. Only time would tell, she supposed.
