To be honest, I thought the episode itself was pretty average for Doctor Who, and nothing amazing. The concept wasn't carried out very well, in my opinion. The whole water things was a good idea but they left it completely unexplained and it didn't make much sense. Very awesome design for the villian though. And the characters were really really good for one-time characters. I cared a lot more about them than I normally do, and the companion was amazing.

The end was what made it a jaw-dropping though, and the whole "fixed point" dilema was very interesting. Literally, the last part though, my mouth was wide open. That was one of those moments when I got completely sucked into a movie or tv-show, and couldn't think of anything else. I actually think they are setting it up for us to be a little more okay with Ten leaving.

And I saw someone post something intersting about the whole Doctor going mad thing... about how this could tie into the wiser and more powerful Doctor that River Song seemed to know, and right now he's just realized he had all this power. He's being careless with it. He is in the weird time of realizing the responsibility and power and also careless and ignorant of it. If this is his awkward, young (assuming he's young for a Time Lord, or at least he's young to having this power), and reckless learning stage... maybe that's why they picked Matt Smith and are having such a young actor play him??? dunno, just a theory.

I really, really, really can't wait to see how this all turns out. Very nervous but very excited.

I agree with the lack of backstory on the part of the water creatures, though the mystery can also makes them that much scarier.

As for the end... Well I hadn't thought of that tie-in to Eleven, but now I'm hoping you're right. I like the idea that he needs to mature and fight his own personal demons because otherwise he'll end up like the Master. Or the Valeyard, I suppose.

TRhe Valyard, ha!
He does end up like him, because it IS him rofl

T'was not a bad story.
The abscence of backstory on the alien lifeforms was good for mystery to keep people wondering (though i swear they made everybodies mouths look a bit reptilian...ala Ice Warriors...(?)).
I really didn't dig that rant the Doctor went on at the end, about being all lordy and god-like....evebn if he kinda sorta actually really is.
It just seemed way too much out of character for the Tenth, and a little psychotic to say the least (TIME LORD VITORIOUS!!! hilarious to say the least).
All in all, it wasa good episode, but one that should have been written and done in a regular full season.
Waitingall those months after Planet of the Dead (which wasnt all that nominal itself) and getting Waters of Mars was a little disappointing.
But mayhaps they are just saving all the good stuff for the final two episodes.
I heard also that they will be showing scenes 4 and 5 for the annual Children in Need charity thingy this year.
So an early sneak peek.
Anybody know exactly when that is?

Well, I understand the abscence of a backstory, I don't think that's exactly what I mean... but you need to make them make more sense. That making their own water thing seemed like a ton of BS. It made it, at least to me, seem more like laziness on the writers part than going for the terror of the mystery. And from what I know, they were going for a scary episode.... but I really wasn't scared by them at all. It was definately a darker episode, but just not scary. Then again, I don't get scared easily at all in general, like, Blink didn't truthfully ever really scare me.... but all the same. I think the concept was great. I just think it wasn't done very well. That's just my opinion though. Like I said, I wouldn't call it terrible, but I would except more from a special I have been waiting so long for. >>;

It did feel out of character and it did seem very wrong for the Doctor to be doing that, but that was the point. I was sitting there honestly thinking "Where is my Doctor and what have you done with him?" They want you to see how wrong it is, because it is very wrong for him to act like that.

But I don't think it was truely terribley out of character as you seem to think it is though. Ten always has seemed more cocky than some of the other Doctors. That, added to the fact that he just realized what power he has, and that he is exactly the right position to save someone he shouldn't but he wants to, can add up to a very bad mix. He did realize his mistake very soon after too. And before now, he's usually had a companion to give him a good punch.

Having a character who is good all the time wouldn't be very realistic either. This will be some interesting character development for him, and will hopefully lead up to him being an even better person.

I thought the episode was good. The not having a back story about the water creatures was a good part of the mystery of the story you know. I kind of thought that the creatures were like a sort of parasite that affected the water.
The part where the doctor is walking away and you here what he has said to all his companions about being the last made me tear up a bit. crying

The whole Time Lord Victorious thing was interesting to say the least. The doctor has spent all this time following the rules, at one point he had to break at one point. I guess he was tired of losing in a way.

In my opinon, it was the DARKEST episode yet.
Trust me, that's a good thing.
1) It shows that the Doc can be stupid and smart. He hasn't realized that people win AND lose. He just keeps thinking he's losing.
2) Adelade was fantastic. Once I saw the gun I thought "Oh please no." I didn't know how deep a person could go.
3) The idea of "water" being the enemy was smart. It's so common. It's so easy to get. No one would ever think it could be evil.
4) I was REEEALY happy to see the Doc finally break. Once seeing Adelade die, I had a big feeling the Doc was going to lose it. He already lost it when he came back for them.
BUT
1) I wish the darkness and humor were more evenly distributed. It felt more dark then funny. That's not bad. I just wish it would be a little more funny.
2) The rest of the crew wasn't really needed. To be honest, I wasn't that sad to see most of the crew turned into "the enemy".
3) Once I saw the shuttle, I immediately thought of "Moon" and "Alien". The shuttle was like the other movies. Big. The characters were similar to the stuff in "Alien". Even the vids made me think of the vid links in "Moon." All that stuff.
In the end, it was VERY VERY good.
I think I've gotton a little insane.
