Intro_____

You are welcome to skip this post it's just informational.

The bubonic plague striked hard around the 1300's in Medieval Europe. Carried by fleas that lived on rats, because of the state of fiefs and other property during the time is spread very quickly. The mortality rate was 100% and the Black Death took out over a third of Medieval Europe's population.

It started in Eastern China and traveled west, consuming all of Europe as it went. Though the Black Death is the most well known case of the bubonic plague striking, it is not the only case. The bubonic plague has striked since then, only taking smaller numbers. The believed reason for the plague weaking is a mutation that got passed from generation to generation that made us immune to the bubonic plague.

The Black Death did not spare lords, bishops, or other nobles, even though it would seem they had less contact with the plagued serfs in the fiefs, they were also struck quite hard by the plague. On the other side, some nuns and monks survived the plague, even though they helped to attempt treating the bubonic plague during the time.

My story does have some history to it, but is otherwise fiction, and should be taken as a fictional story. Enjoy~

Turning____

“I want to tell you a secret, come closer.” The girl whispered. Her hair was stained a dark brown, but it was blond before. I briefly wondered where she had gotten the dye from, but when I stepped closer to the small ten-year-old girl, I could smell it, and I knew that it wasn’t dye. I wasn’t sure what it was really, but it gave off a repulsive smell. Have trouble recalling where the girl came from, hadn’t she just wondered out from the ally? I leaned closer so she could whisper in my ear. Her words, startled me, “They’re going to kill you.” With those words she fell into a fit of giggles. Those simple words, made be realize her hair was stained with blood, I had seen the little girl only four days ago, before the chaos. “They’re coming!” The little girl’s voice was high pitched and hysterical. She walked away crumpling to the ground after only a few yards. I noticed her neck, it was swelling, and it looked black as if it have been burnt. Why hadn’t I noticed it before? They told us when it first started, they all fled, now I was alone, I felt like the last person in the village, and the only other person who remained in this world of mine, was the little girl who was dieing, from the black death. As I looked down at her she smiled. “Ring around the rosey, a pocket full of poisey, ashes, ashes, we all fall DOWN!” She chuckled hysterically again. Even the black death didn’t account for such behavior. The little girl was going to die, and if I didn’t want to die like her, I had to leave.~

Part Two_____

Beginning to walk in the direction the little girl had came, towards the death, and towards the fires that were burning the village down, I knew I was going the wrong way, but the other way had more bodies then this way. Rotten egg, mixed with lemon, and flowers, and death lay in the air, it’s from the bodies, stacked up by buildings to be taken off and buried, the rats going across the ground only add to the smell. Maggots, are spilling out into the streets from the bodies. It’s a horrid sight, it makes me feel filthy in my clothes, it makes me sick, and it makes be afraid that I too had the disease and will die. All of the victims look the same to me, swelling everywhere, vomiting blood in their last days, and black patches stretching across their necks, I hold my breathe as if that will stop me from throwing up, it doesn’t. My vomit spreads green and brown and tan across the ground, but it’s not red, for that at least, I’m grateful. I know it’s best that I don’t linger here, but something catches me eye, a figure standing in the direction I’m heading. He doesn’t appear phased of the smell, he is dressed in black, but that may just be the fog that casts the city in gloom as if showing that there was no resurrection of the once busy town. He begins forward, and stops only yards from me. I can see him much clearer now, he is dressed in black, a black cloak that covers his eyes even when he looks up at me. He has a fair face, it’s clean with a slender nose that’s rather small, I can’t see his eyes but bits of curly blond hair fall around his face, and I guess his eyes are blue. He seems very skinny as if he were starving, but that is no surprise, most of the serfs, including myself, look just as lanky if not more. I am not afraid of him, until he speaks.~

Part Three_____

His voice is chilling like frost that wraps around me and tries to strangle me. It’s almost as if he were killing me just by talking, no matter how kind his words were. “Are you lost dear?” He asks worried. I can not answer, I am frozen, he must assume my parents are dead. “Come now, do not fear me.” He said, obviously coming to the conclusion I thought he would. Even though I was frozen I step forward unwillingly. Again I step forward till I’m only a foot or two from the man. He looks only a year or so older than me, maybe eighteen, but he seems older, now that I can look into his eyes, a pale gray that was most frightening, I decide he must be much older, or very wise for such a young serf. Unless he isn’t a serf at all, which I doubt, since lords and bishops look much more well fed. “In this city filled with dead, you look for salvation of course, what is your name?” He asked kindly and then took a graceful bow. “I’m Devear.” He said, overdoing the pronunciation of the ‘ear’ part of his name.
I switch my weight from one foot to another and study him closely. I do not know much, I am illiterate, having never learned to write, and only slightly learn to read, I don’t think I can make an educated decision on if I should trust him or not. Since he seems to be the only other living thing in the village I decide I have little to loose, since I too shall probably die. “I am Alvir” I know it’s a boys name, but I had brilliant blue eyes, and blond unruly curls that were short they reminded my mother of a boy. I kept my hair short too, though if straight I suppose my hair would reach far past my shoulders. I’m small for my age too, so I hope this man- Devear- does not take me for a young child, since I am of marrying age.
It’s quickly apparent he doesn’t for he smiles grimly. “You have no one, maybe you should come with me.” Even if it was a question he grabbed my hand and practically pulled me along with him. I wasn’t sure where we were going but I was obviously given no choice but to follow.

Part Four_______

It was an hour of walking, once I had giving up struggling from his tight grip it went much faster then I thought. Strangely he took me to the castle, the lord had died not six days before, and everyone who took his place soon died, and once all the lords and bishops were gone, the serfs ran for their lives, so the castle was abandon, it already looked abandon too. As soon as we walked into the main part of the huge building it felt too empty to ever be comfortable. I chewed at my nails as I looks around, until Devear turned to look at me. His gazed was cold, and I could not hold it for long, I let my attention turn to a large rat that had ran when we entered the castle, and it was still running as if it’s life depended on it. Rat’s weren’t normally so fearful of people, so I wondered why this one had gone to such trouble to run for it’s life. Before my attention was drawled away by Devear’s voice. I hadn’t notice till now how hard that cruel voice was to ignore, it was somewhat annoying that I couldn’t escape it, no matter how I tried. “Alvir, you must listen to me, it’s going to hurt, but then it’s going to be better, understand I choose you for a reason, not because you survived, but because you are already dead even as you live, you will understand the beginning from the end.” I hadn’t a clue what he was talking about, all I knew was he was gripping me so tight and so close to him I couldn’t move, I could barely squirm, and it hurt. I struggled to get away, but he leaned in to me, and a flash of white made it impossible for me to move. He was a demon, his teeth were sharpened to a point, all of them, and he was going to kill me, he may very well have been the cause of the plague to begin with. I hadn’t a clue why a demon had come to kill us, I suppose I thought myself protected by our lord as my parents taught me we were, but the plague told me we were never protected. Yet I still had never thought the plague had been the fault of demons, even now, as pain grasped me, burning most in my neck and spreading through my body like a horrible fire as blood was redirected from my heart to my neck, I did not believe it was the fault of this demon.

Part Five_____

It took a few minutes, we must have a lot of blood in our bodies, because as Devear pulled away from my neck, blood dripping to the floor from the open wound, and dripping down his chin, staining his teeth, I was still conscious and very much awake. I felt so tired I may die right then, but at the same time an energy that felt much like fire still burned through my body. I didn’t see what Devear did next, he put his wrist to his mouth, and then to mine, and suddenly, the elixir of life came to my mouth. In my sate, the warm liquid he pored down my throat tasted like the best of wines ever made, mixed with something sweet like honey, to make an irresistible drink, the quickly reached to have more and drank, grunting as it was pulled away from me after a minute. I saw Devear fall to the ground clutching his wrist for a while, then he stood up and looked down at me. That fire I had felt before was gone, replaced by something that can not be described at a feeling, but more like a color, it felt like black. If it was possible to feel black, darkness creeping over you, tightening it’s grip on anything that made you feel pain, suffocating you, killing you. It was horrible, I had never felt something so terrible, I never knew pain could reach such a level. I had broken a leg before, gotten many cuts, been through the worst of headaches and sicknesses, nothing compared to this pain. It didn’t end, even as my vision went black, as my hearing went away, the blackness ate away at me, until it didn’t seem like I had a body to eat away at anymore, and I went numb. At that time, I did something I was trying to avoid, I died.

Part Six_____

I didn’t wake up for six days, and when I did I was sure I had been dropped in heaven. I lay on sheets, looking at my hands and clothes. I was clean, not a spot of dirt on anything that I could see, my hair, normally plastered to my face, seemed an inch longer and puffy like curls should look, and my clothes were clothes I had seen only the lord’s wife wear. There sitting at the edge of the elegant four post bed, was Devear, he looked smug, dressed much like a lord himself. He looked so smug though, that it scared me. I scrambled for words, something I never seemed to be able to find, even when the blackness overtook me I couldn’t find words to scream, I could only let out a wail of pain that sounded much like an animal. Perhaps, I did not need words for Devear though, he was not looking for words, but something more, and by his expression, he must have gotten it. “Hungry?” He asked his voice harsh and smug. I had not noticed hungry until he mentioned it. When he said that word my throat burned for a thirst I had never known, and it felt as if it were on fire, as if I were dehydrated and would soon die without the liquid I seeked. I knew though, that I did not thirst for water, even though I could not place the thirst. Only when Devear handed me a glass of wine, and I drank ever last drop, did I know what the thirst I had was.

Finish______

Blood. I had never thought I would drink such a horrid liquid, and enjoy it so much. I paled when I realized what I had drunken, and even though I was digested, I was dieing to have more. I demanded more even as I tried to think it wasn’t possible. Devear didn’t look worried though as he took the empty glass. “Alvir, welcome my darling to the word of vampyres!” He said in a welcoming tone. It was anything but welcoming though. I was pretty sure I was going to faint, but my mind had already accepted it. I was a demon. I was damned. I would no longer be accepted into heaven or hell, I would be immortal, a horrid creature that killed to live. My eyes began to tear, and Devear leaned toward me to kiss me cheek.
His lips however, did not make contact, with speed I did not know I had, I grabbed his neck as if to strangle him, even as I applied pressure, all he did was laugh. “Don’t touch my you bloody demon!” I managed, even though my throat had been dry all this time, I finally was able to get out what I wanted to say. It felt wonderful. I tossed Devear toward the wall, and he hit, still chuckling, I knew I would not be able to kill him, but I knew I had to.
“Alvir, you can not kill me.” He assured. I took a post from the bed, snapping it and pressed it into his chest where his heart should be. All the myths said that was how you killed a demon. He gurgled a bit but then pulled the piece of wood out and smiled. “You do not want to kill me, you will die without me.” He continued. I hissed, my mind wouldn’t let me process the words. All I knew was he needed to die. I took a torch from the wall and tossed it on him, throwing sheets o him as well. But he just brush them off, the flames included. I even managed to come across a bucket of water as I ran away from him, walking steadily toward me, leaving me to attack with no use. Everything I tried didn’t work, and I was so filled with angry I was ready to break. But not yet, I had to try at least one more thing. A ran toward him pushing him, I had already tried throwing him into a wall, I knew it wouldn’t work, but I had to get my anger out some way, but this time was different, he hit a window, the glass breaking, and he fell threw. Light from the day poured into the room, I hissed instinctively and backed away before my skin got badly burned, but Devear had fallen out the window, into the sunlight that had given he a bad sunburn in only a second or two. He couldn’t have survived, and my anger was draining from me finally, knowing he was dead. My conscious mind came back in time to realize, as I heard his last screams of his immortal life, that without him, I would not know how to live in this new life. I would be alone. And most importantly, I would not be able to kill myself, not after listening to Devear’s screams from the sun. I would be forced to live in this world, living only in the night with no training, or restriction, what if I killed entire villages, like the black plague? I collapsed to the floor and tears spilled over. I was a monster now though. I would just have to live with that.
