It seems they really want a military on par with the most modern ones around the world. Have you read up on some of the stuff they've been designing? Their new K2 tank completely blows the M1 Abrams out of the water, and their new K-21 IFV isn't far behind in design brilliance. Plus three different South Korean companies just produced three awesome APCs, and the Army is struggling to pick one to buy.
Seriously. These guys are getting good. They're like the Germany of Asia. Hell, if this trend keeps up they'll be better designers than the Germans. And what if they export this stuff? They're already selling the Turks some of the tech from the K2. It's not a stretch to think that South Koreans weapons could soon become as popular as German weapons once they get their production lines warmed up, reducing the enourmous cost of the K2.
Damn. We weapons enthusiasts should keep a close eye on these guys. Who knows what awesome toys they'll come up with next.

Keep in mind that at least one of the bigger arms makers in South Korea is also a radical religious leader of a powerful pseduo-christian cult.
Ever hear the name Sun Myung Moon? He owns the Tongil Group that makes rifles for the Korean army.
Oh, and his son founded and remains the CEO of Kahr Arms in Worcester, Massachusetts. He also bought Auto-Ordanace, the makers of the semi-automatic version of the Thompson Machine Gun.
I agree. Let's keep an eye on them.

I was just saying we should watch eagerly to see what other cool things they make so we can oogle at them lustfully.

Back on topic, the South Koreans do make some interesting production choices that the US seems too timid to commit to, given the scale of our military requirements.
For example...
http://world.guns.ru/assault/as98-e.htm
It appears that the Koreans are willing to invest in the DD / Daewoo K11 dual-caliber air-burst weapon. If this weapon proves out in the field, this will give their ground forces a distinct edge in engaging various levels of threat.
