Let's start things off with a fact. Lyell wasn't a scaredy-cat.
At least, that was what Lyell claimed. It wasn't that he was scared of the potential thunderstorm that may begin after Mari left. It was rather that he would like to accompany her so she might not be alone. She was going to meet one of her clients this evening, and who knew when she may return or how far she may be going. Lyell also told himself that he was there to protect her... even if he knew that he probably wouldn't be any help...
Looking out the window as Mari drove, Lyell blinked as the car slowed to a stop. Mari had mentioned that they wouldn't be going to the client's house, but to some neutral location. However, this location... "You're meeting at a haunted house." Lyell remarked, voice deadpan.
Mari laughed softly, shaking her head as she parked her car and stepped out. "It's not haunted," she assured.
Sliding to the ground and shutting the door, Lyell moved around the vehicle to stand at Mari's side as she locked the doors. "It looks haunted," he stated in retaliation.

((btw I like the different colors for who's talking thing, so I'm going to steal it. whee ))
Two red eyes peered out of the window of an old house. They blinked a few times and then disappeared. If anyone was looking into the window at the time they may have thought they saw some sort of ghost or monster. However it was neither of the two. It was a boy named Dorian. He drew back from the window and went over to Knife. "We've been waiting here for 20 minutes." he complained. Knife peered down at him.
"Yes I know Dorian. Do you remember what I said about being here so early?" Dorian looked contemplative.
"Because it's better to be the first one at any sort of meeting. Something about neutral territory and establishing a dominance and awareness of surroundings?" Knife smile and patted his head.
"Yes exactly...'something' like that." Knife glanced out the window as he heard a car go by.
"So why did you bring me along? Just to teach me that?" Knife shook his head.
"Well it is something that is good to learn, however, it was not the reason I brought you along. You see the woman I may be hiring has a boy around your age, I thought if she happened to bring him along it might be nice for you two to play. It certainly doesn't hurt to have friends." Dorian's eyes widened a little. He hadn't gotten a chance to play with any boys his age before. He was excited, but he didn't want to show how much that pleased him just in case the boy didn't come along.
"I see...that could be fun..." He wandered back over to the window to peer out of it. After waiting for a bit, impatiently, a car finally pulled up.

((x3 If playing more than one character, I've always preferred highlighting dialogue rather than full paragraphs. From there, it just became habit. Either no color or dialogue color in prose.))
Lyell gave a last wary look to the house before following after Mari as she moved to the back of the car. Watching as the trunk was popped, he observed his caretaker remove a bag from within. Frowning as the realization struck that he was now the pack mule, Lyell accepted to offered bag and shrugged it up onto his shoulder. Well, he supposed this is what he deserved for insisting on coming along (even if Mari had started it with an offhand suggestion).
Turning back to the old house, Lyell continued to offer it a cautious look as he followed after Mari. He rolled his eyes as she gave the door a cheerful knock before entering the house. "It's called being polite, Lyell. Even if it isn't the client's house, people are a lot more relaxed when they know you are there."

Dorian watched from the window excitedly as he watched a woman and a boy with wild looking brown hair and green eyes get out of the car. He pulled away from the window and stood by Knife. A knock sounded on the door and Knife went over and opened it stepping aside so the woman and boy could enter. "Welcome." he said with a charming smile. "Come right in." He placed a hand on his chest. "I am Knife, and this is my...well, this is Dorian." He gestured to Dorian. Dorian bowed politely to them both.
"Pleased to meet you." He smiled at both the woman and the boy, forgetting in his excitement to hide his fangs while smiling.

Mari smiled faintly, looking to the young boy who seemed to be accompanying her client. Well, he did seem to be quite the young gentleman, and Mari had no protests to that. "Your Dorian?" she stated, acknowledging both that the male gave no specifics to their relationship and yet that there was some sort of relationship between the two. "Charming."
Lyell saw those fangs! He did, he did! Glancing up at Mari, he didn't say anything in regard to those fangs, though he did shoot her a look that quite clearly read 'I told you so!'. Much to his regret, Mari ignored it and continued speaking. "I'm Malice, and this is Lyell." Lyell gave a little nod at this, shifting slightly on his feet.

Knife patted Dorian on the head in a way that some may perceive as -gasp- fondly. "Yes he is quite charming isn't he?. It's a pleasure to meet you both." He offered his hand to shake.
Dorian smiled politely at Mari but kept his focus mainly on Lyell. He seemed rather nervous and not overly pleased to be there. Dorian wondered if he had done anything wrong or something. He kept his face carefully blank and polite though. Knife glanced at both boys. "Dorian why don't you and Lyell play while Malice and I discuss our business?" Dorian nodded up at Knife.
"Ok Knife." He smiled back at Lyell, more carefully this time. "Let's go over here Lyell." he started heading over to the room next to the one Knife and Mari were in.

Lyell glanced to the older male when his suggestion was made. While he wouldn't deny he was slightly wary of the other boy, playing with someone else would surely be more interesting than lingering around for words of business and other boring details. Leaving Mari's side, the boy strayed to follow after this other child, Dorian, as he moved into the next room over. Sure, he was leaving Mari's sight... but he doubted anything bad would happen.

Dorian walked into the next room and patted around a bit on the wall close to the door looking for the light switch. Once he found it he flipped it up with a click. The lights seemed reluctant to start back up after so many years of rest but they flickered on. The room had obviously not seen any human activity in quite a while. It seemed that it had once functioned as a study, containing an old fashioned desk, bookshelves and a couch. The floor was carpeted both with an old Persian rug and a layer of dust. Everything in the room was covered in dust in fact. He peered around at all the books. "Wow.... There are so many old books in here..." He eyed the shelves looking for any familiar books or any books with fun pictures. He ran his fingers along the spines gently and then he turned to look at Lyell. "Do you like books Lyell?"

Lyell hesitated in the doorway until the lights flickered to life, following Dorian into the room only once he could see. Toeing at the rug, Lyell frowned for a few moments. So dusty... He was still fairly convinced that this place was somehow haunted or otherwise filled with ghosts and similarly creepy things. It certainly was abandoned years ago, and that wasn't earning it any points.
Though Dorian's question snapped Lyell's attention back to the present. Blinking, the boy looked over to Dorian. "Hm?" Though a few moments later Lyell continued, recalling the question. "Ah! Yes," he answered, crossing the room to climb onto the chair behind the desk and seat himself there. "How about you?"
Lyell was certainly at least becoming a little more comfortable around Dorian.

Finally finding a book he found worth looking at, Dorian pulled it carefully from the shelf. Knife had taught him old things needed to be treated with love and care to keep them intact. He wiped the dust from the cover and it read in red lettering "Dracula". He watched the other boy settle in behind the desk and then made his way over to the couch. He stared down at the dust and then making a face tried to brush most of it off before sitting. He sat carefully as not to disturb more dust.
He turned his attention back to Lyell. He smiled a bit. "I love books. Both looking at the pictures in them and reading them." He opened the book he currently had gently. "What kind do you like? I like ones with paintings in them, scary stories, and funny ones too."

Settling himself at the desk, Lyell closed his eyes as he let his imagination run with some fantastical ideas. That he was some rich gentleman, sitting in his fine and noble study... funding some expedition to the far corners of the globe... and maybe accompanying the ship? The illusions were broken as risen dust coaxed a sneeze from Lyell, eyes blinking open afterwards.
"Mm.. I like books about places. Particularly far-off places," he answered, wiping absently at his face to rid any clinging dust he may accidentally breathe. "I'd love to go traveling sometime. Mari said maybe when I'm older."

Dorian turned the pages of the book as he listened. As he was going through the book he came across a page with an illustration of Dracula biting a woman. Why...that thing had fangs just like he did! Dorian glanced nervously around and then shut the book carefully and went to put it back.
"Ah...um yes. I'd like to travel too. I really want to go to Europe and see all the beautiful art." His voice held just a hint of how much that picture had unnerved him. Why did that thing in the picture have teeth like him, and why did the blood look so pretty?! He was feeling very concerned about this and was tempted to dash out to Knife and make him answer about it. Instead he stayed and tried to pretend everything was fine.

Lyell tilted his head, eyes following Dorian as the boy moved to return the book he'd been looking at. Something suddenly seemed different about the boy. Like he was worried or concerned about something he'd seen in that book. Not that Lyell was willing to do too much probing, if Dorian didn't want to say.
"That's nice. I'm not really sure what I want to see or do... just that I want to see new places and do interesting things." And then he couldn't help himself... "Is something wrong?"
