I'm a freshman. And this is the first time I've had to try out for 1st chair. Usually I'm 1st chair automatically because all the other flutes in middle school sucked.
But now I have competition. Joy! >.<
I'm not too worried about what chair I get. I've just heard some pretty bad rumors on Chair competitions in sections. I don't want to be a part of that. My section..well all except 1 person rules.

BUT ANYWAYS! Discuss you're past Chair Feuds!
I wish to know!

And oh yeah, band Kids freaking rules. 'Nuff said.

well in high school i've been first chair since sophmore year, freshman year i was on the first part but i was on second clarinet cause you wouldn't believe this other guy, WOW. So, ya, in my school we dont audition, you can tell by skill that i'm first clarinet biggrin lol. Last time i had to work was in seventh grade and i can tell you i majorly ended up POing about 4 eigth grade red heads eek

we audition for chairs right before marching season ends. it sucks because our scales determine our seat and we don't get to play a solo. it sucks worse taht we can't challenge for chairs; like, right now, i'm 4th chair flute and the only piccolo and i want to move up a seat, but i won't get to until we retest...IF we retest.

Last year we didn't really have chair challenges, which was weird, but I think we will this year. Only thing is in my band first chair means little. We get to switch off parts, so on one song we will be first on another we may be third. But i'm fine with that I haven't played second part for 2 years, 3 part ha! But right now on our only song I have 3. I never realized how much fun lower parts could be. I always hated them because I like high notes, and last time I had a second or third part I barely played. Right now, I am playing strongly and confidenty instead of "wimpy and scared"(As said by my 7th grade bdXD) And frankly, I'm quite enjoying myself. On first part, I couldn't play nearly as loud. "Calm down, let the lower parts show."(Didnt help that our lower parts failed last year) You never get told to quiet own on lower parts unless it is out of context(aka ff on pp. you know what I mean) And then it sounds really cool, which I never noticed. Like in our song, a christmas festival, there is this cool part where we have melody that has occasional harmony notes and a few extra eighth note runs. And what makes it more fun is the only other clarinet on third a part with me isn't very good(though she is better then the two male clarinets, who are not in our class period.)

I'm a percussionist, so we just fight over parts that we want :3

I'm not the best clairnetest in the world. But I can just say I play 2nd Clarinet. I really don't care what chair I am as long as I play 2nd, I can't play first at all. There are some notes that I just don't know that are that high.

My friend.. oh my god.. -.-
The day we found out what chair we sat in, Kiera (the friend) found out she was last. The whole time she was complaing AND THEN SHE STARTED CRYING. I'm like O.o wtf, really? So afterwards I asked a friend what was wrong with her ( i already knew i just kinda wanted details) She told me Kiera was pissed because shes last chair, and then i guess Kiera sat there saying she was better then all of them. Im like "O.O WTF bunch of bullshit, because shes always last chair she always has been and she doesnt even know half the notes, she has to ask me what a F-sharp is, the low one... shes just ugh... -.- i dont get whys shes complaing shes been last chair since middle school...

Last year, in 8th grade, I seemed to have improved on the trumpet drastically, to where I was fighting between first and second chair with this person who had the chance to go from Beginning band to the top band of the school in 6th grade. (They chose to be in the second to best band instead.) The chair tests felt more competitive with that person than they did before.

XD I'm a freshman, so there's no point really. The fish are automatically given last chair, unless their low register sucks... And my low register is really good... emo

I'm the only piccolo in band ,
But I sit in the flute section.

I sit on the right of the Section leader :3.
The BD argues with me and tries to get me to sit on the end of the section.

Unless I go back to playing flute.

Then he puts me 2nd to last.

Which is completely messed up, because the person sitting above me is BEGINNER. And his register tone is more terrible than mine.
I'm an intermediate player, who has memorized most of the scales, yet I get stuck sitting 2nd to last.

I'm in 8th grade. Me and another girl are pretty much exactly as good as each other, so it's always hard for my director to choose who gets first chair. We were barely divided in all-district, too. I was first and she was second. We make each other improve pretty quickly. I've been first chair every time since December, though, so maybe I've finally passed her.

We never got to audition for chairs. So I'm stuck as "second" chair, even though I never call myself that, indefinitely. I will never call myself a chair when I never was even given a real chance. I guess that I don't support the lead player because he still riding on an audition from last year when we had a director that did auditions. The whole band always look at my section and at looks down at me for not being first. confused

Well, I'm in the flute section. We are all usually okay with what we get. I challenged up my freshman year. There's been some controversy over people who kinda aren't good at all and have always been in the lower band getting into our top band, but that's about it.

My good friend and I have always kind-of been almost on the same level, but she's always topped me by just a hair. It isn't really a big deal to either of us, but when I got a chair ahead of her in county, I was happily surprised. razz I've never passed her before then!

We have seat auditions maybe about a month after the end of marching season. We do one concert where the bottom 2 bands are combined and the top band is alone (we have large band...something like 140 members). Most of the freshmen are automatically put in the bottom band, but some are moved up directly after marching (I was heart ...~nya!). We then have chair auditions after the winter concert, where the two bands are separated and the chairs are usually rearranged.

Well, we're currently having chair try-outs. we are playing scales from memory and one song. I have never really been first chair my entire instrument years.
