What does OC stand for?

I'm not sure if this is the right place to put it, but this seemed to be the best place. Anyways, what does OC stand for? I have a basic idea of what it is, but what are they used for? The things people always ask for in the freebie section.

OC stands for Origninal Character. Normally when people ask you to draw these, they give you a discription of what they want you to draw. Basically, they create a character in their head and want you to put it on paper for them.
