im just wondering about one thing.. how many kinds of elf are there exactly?

that is question for your father. i know there are wood elves, half elves, high elves, shadow elves, and dark elves... at least i think that is what they are called.

Well son.... there are many many kinds of elves. In the beginning, there was the one Eldar race, which are the ancestors of all elves. After a while, several tribes of elves began to form their own identities.
I will continue mother's list, but this is by no means a complete list:
High Elves: Oldest and most regal of all the elves.
Grey or Moon Elves: These are the most populous of the elves.
Green or Wood Elves: These elves live in the deep woods.
Wild Elves: These elves are feral and quite rare.
Sea Elves (The Dargonesti): These elves can breathe under water and live in great cities beneath the waves.
Gold or Sun Elves: A small group of High-Elves that live on an island where the Eldar once lived.
Starry Elves: These elves live in cold climates and are great masters of magic.
Dark/Shadow Elves or Drow: There is a large population of our race that lives below the ground and this is where we get our name.
Half-Elves: These are children of one elf parent and usually one human parent.
