Investigators were trying Friday to determine why a Coast Guard airplane on a nighttime search for a missing boater collided with a Marine Corps helicopter flying in formation with three others to a military island off southern California.

The collision occurred minutes after civilian air traffic controllers told the Coast Guard C130 pilot to begin communicating with military controllers, said Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor.

All seven people aboard the C130 and the two-person crew of the Marine Corps AH1W Super Cobra helicopter remained missing as a search of a 644-square-mile area focused on a debris field about 50 miles off the San Diego coast.

The accident has "likely taken the lives of nine individuals," Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said.

Question: how the ******** does a Marine attack helicopter NOT see something as large as a C-130 either on radar or in their view? How does one miss that?

What angle was the collision? The C-130 could have stuck the top of the chopper from behind, and neither the C-130 crew or the Marine crew would have seen the other. Then again, that doesn't explain radar. They should have seen each other on radar.

I can see not seeing an attack helicopter on radar. It could be stealth'd out. But not seeing a C130? That's walking headfirst into a wall, that is.

At close range radar is picking up a SuperCobra attack helicopter. Sorry, but it is. A Cobra ain't anywhere near stealthy enough not to be picked up at collision range.

Y'know, maybe they thought it was a boat. It's small, it could easily have been moving slow...

This is quite possible.

Still doesn't explain why the chopper pilot failed to see the BLIMP approaching him on his screen...
