the modernist composition we are being taught.

Like, what the hell happened to writing music with a tune? To playing instruments without spending all your effort trying to make them make weird noises that they weren't designed for? To writing something because it pleases your ears rather than because it looks clever on paper?

Obviously it depends what piece it is, but some of us (me) actually like that kind of thing. I am actually offended by the notion that one should have to play instruments as they are designed to be played.

Of course the way they were designed to be played shouldn't be the be-all and end-all, but I detest being made to feel that it is wrong and uncreative and whatever.

I really just do what I want. I wouldn't even call it composing, there's rarely ever theory involved in the music that I make, other than selecting random root notes. But anything "experimental" will just be whatever I do on a whim. I think that notion applies for how I feel about instruments. It's unfair not to use them in any way possible, including how they're "properly" supposed to be played.

I think you guys are misunderstanding me.

I'm practically being taught that it's incorrect to write a piece of music with like, tonality, and traditional technique. This is what is pissing me off - not the suggestion that I might use instruments in an unusual fashion.
