Does anyone know how I can improve my tone on bassoon? I use vibrato but the mid range notes just sound...like a dying cow. DX

I've recently started learning. Mine doesn't sound like a dying cow though.

Tone on bassoon is up to the bocal and the reed quality and the condition and material of the body. If you're using good air support and not biting down on the reed, that's all you can do before you have to start considering material factors. Start with trying out different brands of reeds - if you can get the advice of a lessons teacher, that's the best bet. A good reed is vital. Second, get a pipe cleaner, fold one end over so there's not a sharp wire edge and use it to clean out your bocal. Third, take the cap off the end of the boot joint and check for damage to the u-tube or the cork that seals it to the body. If there's damage there, it needs to be fixed. If you still sound awful, send the instrument to the shop to have the pads checked. Beyond that, there's only replacing the bocal with a quality one (Fox is good) or if you're playing on a poorer quality instrument, upgrading to something better.

I am also fairly new at playing the bassoon, but I always stick to this kind of advice: Practice, practice, practice! I know hearing that may be annoying, but the more you practice an instrument, the more you get used to how it is and how you should adjust to play. The more you know your bassoon, the more you know how to make it sound good.
I recently played about fifteen measures in a piece we're going to play that I couldn't play before. I was so happy, lol! [<--random fact I decided to throw in]
