Hi I just joined ^_^ I stopped eating beef last January and now I want to step it up and stop eating poultry and pigs. I guess I'm just trying to gradually become a vegetarian so it won't be such a huge switch. Is that so bad? One day I hope to be a lacto-ovo-vegetarian.

I applaud your desire to change your dietary habits for whatever reason. whee
But remember, there is always MORE you can do to help animals. Even a vegan can be lazy in the campaign for animal well-fare.
But I think it's awesome how you refferred to yourself as a pescitarian instead of a vegetarian who eats fish. that irks me.lol. 'w'

Every little bit helps. That is how I started too, by slowing cutting out meat over the span of maybe six months or a little more. I stopped eating cow and pig meat. Then I stopped eating bird meat. Then I cut out fish as well. I'm working on the dairy now, but that is a lot slower going for me.

I think that cutting down ANY amount is a positive thing. smile As long as you don't eat fish at EVERY meal or something. sweatdrop
Pescetarian's don't annoy me, I just find it annoying when people assume that ALL vegetarians eat fish. It causes a lot of misconceptions.

Thorndrop I just find it annoying when people assume that ALL vegetarians eat fish. It causes a lot of misconceptions. My mother is one of those people who thinks fish aren't meat. At dinner tonight, actually: Do you want some salmon? It's vegan, right? Not even joking. Not to mention that I never ate fish in the first place. Oh how my mother loves & appreciates me.

Kudos to you for consciously changing over to a cruelty-free diet. Good luck on your transition, I hope you discover a lot about animals and about yourself in the process.

I'm vegan because I care about animals, but I'm going to give you an answer that might surprise you. If by "pescetarian" you mean that you eat fish perhaps just once or twice a week, but you consume eggs and dairy every day, I think the biggest improvement in your diet towards kindness will be to drop the eggs and dairy. Both egg and dairy industries are quite violent towards their animals. Instead of the relatively quick cruelty of killing some poor fish once or twice a week, the cruelty of the egg and dairy industries are prolonged. Male chicks plowed into fields alive. Hens crammed into crowded cages for the rest of their lives. Male calves isolated from their momma cows, confined in stalls where they can't move, given an iron deficient diet, then killed for veal. Cows slaughtered for hamburgers well before their natural lives are lived out. I can go on and on with the list....
Meanwhile, I add kudos to those already given. Feel free to ask anything about anything....

I never liked fish, even back when i still ate meat. the smell of it alone was enough to keep me from ever, ever touching it.
but yeah, I agree with what was said before...if you are going veg because of the cruelty factor, please take into consideration the fact that eating dairy and eggs also contributes as much misery....the average age of an egg-laying hen in one of those factories is less than 2 years. they're beaks are usually chopped off to keep them from pecking at each other due to overcrowding and stress. they are killed as soon as they stop being quite as productive.
and lets not forget that cow's aren't just milk machines. The are forced to have babies every year in order to keep producing milk, and their babies are almost immediately taken away from them. i've seen how mother cows react when they are separated from their babies....I can't imagine the emotion distress they are under having that happen every single year.
Not that i'm knocking you. we ALL had to start somewhere, and I'm thrilled that we have another caring, compassionate human being in our numbers. But it would be even better if you would consider going vegan eventually. <333

you're a lot like me in the way you're going veg. I first sopped eating red meat 2 years ago, then everything except fish, gelatin, and things with meat (that I took out). now I'm more serious, but I still eat fish and I always want to unless there's an extreme fish shortage.

Nautilus96 but I still eat fish and I always want to unless there's an extreme fish shortage. A lot of fish populations are dangerously low. So if you're going to eat fish, make sure you at least know what kind of fish it is and check to see how the population of that fish is doing. You should also check the mercury levels of that fish. Some fish, for example, absorb more mercury than others. As a result, some types of fish should be eaten sparingly, if at all.
