What are your opinions on the use of gene therapy for curing some genetic defects?

I think gene therapy is OK, but some ethical dilemmas may arise out of how the gene therapy is researched or obtained. This is the case with stem cell research. With aborted embryos being a good source of stem cells, research in this area is tied closely to the abortion debate and its many impationed supporters and detractors on both sides (but let's not get into that here and now as that is an entirely different topic unto itself).
The truth is that we human beings have sort of gotten ouselves into a genetic pickle by thwarting natural selection on our own behalf. Human compassion and our desire to save and improve the lives of all people have maintained, and even in some instances increased, the prevalance of genetic disorders both big and small. Now we need to use our life saving science to fix the problems that it in part helped cause. It would seem no big decision is ever truly easy.
