Amelia frowned slightly at A'ram's response... wondering at how someone could say that. If asked the same question, she would have much to say of Sharath, for the gold was very far from 'nothing special'. Wasn't each dragon as dear to their rider as a lover might be? She thought so, but... ah there. When he relented, she smiled her thanks to the brown before turning her attention. Perhaps he was just trying to modest.
"Noble." Amelia replied, glancing at the brown once more, "He sounds like a noble dragon. No wonder Sharath likes him." For that she really was grateful. Friends of the dragon were few and she encourage Sharath in her awkward attempts at a reigned in ego and queenly presence. Maybe this would prove to the gold that she needn't try so very hard to impress her place upon other or expect loyalty so immediately - both would come in time.
"Ah, that's good. I was afraid I'd been chosen by a particularly stubborn and determined one." She chuckled, then staggered slightly as Sharath nudged her hard enough to move her.
You do not mean that, right Mine? Her eyes whirled with the colours of worry and Amelia immediately felt awful. Turning away from A'ram, she hugged her dragon's head and kissed her nose.
No, I did not mean it in a bad way, Sharath. It is good that you are stubborn, good that you are so confident. I can count on you, always, and I would not have you any other way. When she withdrew, Amelia paused to look at her dragon, I am sorry, I did not mean for that to be hurtful, mine.
Good. Because I think you're stubborn and confident too and I think those are good things as well. Sharath quipped, her smile returning and the worry fading from her eyes.
The gold returned her gaze to Rath and bobbed her head, You are welcome Rath. And even if you cannot fly in a wing, I am sure there are things you can do... I do not know what right now but I am certain you can still be important. It was a youthful encouragement as tried to think of things an old dragon could do and found herself coming up with not a clue.

A'ram wondered at Amelia's frown. Had she never heard someone tease their dragon? True, her bond was new and like all dragon-rider bonds very precious, but even A'ram, who had no appreciable sense of humor, would tease his dragon every so often. Very occasionally. Mostly no one could tell when he was joking because he did it so rarely. He probably would not make another attempt for many days after this one went over so poorly. He didn't quite understand how his grandson, whose face was as expressive as stone, could amuse others with wit. There was much he did not understand about B'shir, though. Not that he would ever admit it.
"He strives for nobility," A'ram acknowledged. But he knew that neither he nor his dragon would ever achieve it. Nobility was a thing one was born to, and although Rath was the finest brown ever born, browns were not nobility in the Weyr hierarchy. "And if Sharath likes him, the both of us are honored. She seems to be a queen to be admired, and if she is stubborn and determined, so much the better."
There are things I can do. You needn't worry that I'll be useless, Rath said with a dragon's smile. He knew that to a young dragon he seemed positively ancient and all there was to the future was fighting thread, but he had been giving the matter some consideration. I can help train weyrlings, and A'ram can fill bags with firestone for those who are fighting. I can serve as a watch dragon.
He did like the young. They may annoy his rider, with their questions and challenges and disregard for rules, but he tolerated them better, with the hope that they would come to understand that some things could not be challenged, not all questions had answers, and that rules were there for a reason. This charity did not extend to Sakneth, however, who annoyed him mightily.

Amelia scoffed, easily picking up on the other's insinuation - it was something she'd wondered about in her childhood until she came to realize the truth of the word 'noble', "Bloodline has nothing to do with nobility. Nor does colour." She glanced from A'ram to Rath and back, "I'm an Excavator. And I'm willing to bet a Mark you didn't know I existed prior to the Hatching. The only thing that's changed between then and now is that I have my Sharath with me... Nobility is not about your parentage, or your profession - not to me. It is is how you carry yourself, how you act, and taking pride in what you do," she smirked, "And doing it right the first time. A dragon is a dragon. I do not claim to know the nuances of the Weyr hierarchy, not yet, but I will not look down on you simply because your soul mate is not the same colour as mine. That's ridiculous."
Sharath whuffled, relieved, Good... doing nothing... that's even worse then not being able to do anything. That would be terrible... What's a Watch Dragon? She turned to Amelia, confused and the girl shrugged not know either. The closest thing she could think of was a watch wher... but the only whers she'd encountered had be a few that had helped with mining. Sharath compared the mental image to Rath and scoffed, You're no wher, Rath.

"You're generous to say so," A'ram replied. He was perfectly fine with the idea of hierarchies. They made sense and kept order in the world, and he was all in favor of that.
"I am in a perfectly respectable position in the Weyr, and content with it. And I would be in an extremely uncomfortable position if my dragon was the same color as yours." It was an old joke, practically lacking in humor for having been told so often, which was why A'ram felt only a little uncomfortable speaking it. It wasn't in the best taste, but most humor was at least a little tasteless, which is why A'ram disdained it for the most part. B'shir had better be appreciative of A'ram's efforts to make a good impression.
Of course I'm not, Rath said, startled. He had never considered that a watch dragon and a watchwher were anything alike. A watch dragon warns of threadfall and that sort of thing. They're not guards to keep strangers at bay.
He flicked his tail dismissively. He wasn't an arrogant dragon, but he was confident that simply by being a dragon he was superior to any wher. That was the way things worked. Whers served their purpose, but it was not the same as dragons', nor was it worthy of the same respect. It was a very mundane sort of purpose, after all. The things couldn't even fly, really. Even firelizards could fly, and in his experience those creatures were as dumb as posts.

Amelia laughed at his joke, "I should think so. Shards, I'd be struck dumb if a brown chose me. I may not be exactly frilly and girly but I'm not interested in other women. I prefer my boys." She winked at that, a mischievous smile playing across her lips. The homosexuality had never bothered Amelia, as growing up surrounded by sexually confidence people had educated her from an early age.
The predjudices of the holds never made any sense to her. Did it really matter all that much? As far as she was concerned, it did not.
Sharath nodded, strongly agreeing. You are definitely not a glorified guard hound.

A'ram stiffened almost imperceptibly. Nearly a lifetime of living at High Reaches had taught him that it was a bad idea to show outwardly that he found discussions of a person's sexuality to be in poor taste, just as it was generally a mistake to let it become widely know that he disapproved of homosexuality. Oh, naturally he could have transferred to Telgar Weyr, where their beliefs were more closely-aligned with his own, but he had Impressed at High Reaches, and that was where he owed his allegiance. And by now he had quite the clan that he'd have to relocate if he did ask to transfer, including a young bronze that he suspected the Weyr would be reluctant to release.
"That's usually a good trait in a goldrider," A'ram remarked dryly. He tried not to actually frown when she winked, but that didn't stop a crease from appearing between his eyebrows. Fortunately, his eyebrows had always been very thick with a tendency to try to meet in the middle of his forehead, which meant that small things like that crease often went unnoticed.
Rath, he thought. Extricate yourself. We've taken up enough of their time.
The brown dragon bowed his head both to accept Sharath's statement and so that his next words would come off politely. It doesn't seem as though B'shir and Sakneth plan to put in an appearance any time soon, which means we will have to go looking for them I suppose.
A'ram picked up on his dragon's conversation and said to Amelia, "I should probably find my grandson before the next chore block starts. It has been an honor to speak with you."

Amelia missed the slight nuances of A'ram's disapproval and when he spoke to remove himself so suddenly from the conversation, she blinked. "Ah... alright. Good luck..." Stepping back, she found Sharath's hide with one hand as the gold shifted her attention from the brown to the rider.
Irritation whirled in her eyes at the sudden departed but a quick mental exchange kept the queen quiet. Why anyone would suddenly run off on Hers, Sharath wouldn't know. Hers was someone everyone should be eager to meet. Hmph.
Scoffing audibly to communicate her irritation, Sharath then decided to continue on her way, head held up high as she suddenly walked away from the brownrider and his dragon, Farewell then, Rath. I wish you luck in training Sakneth. Come along Amelia, we've things to do.
Amelia turned to regard the departing form of her dragon with a bit a surprised look on her face then sighed. She couldn't exactly say she wasn't glad for Sharath's confident departure, or blame her for being annoyed, and with that she offered a parting wave and a quick 'goodbye!' before heading after Sharath.

A'ram bowed to Amelia and Rath inclined his head toward Sharath. Both held the attitude until the pair had departed, speaking their farewells with their gaze lowered. True, they were females, but there was a hierarchy in the Weyr which could not be selectively ignored. It had been difficult for A'ram at first, to defer to a female leader, but he had learned more about the Weyrleader's duty and the idea that he could keep the woman who was supposedly in charge in check. It was a reassurance to him. Women could be unaccountably witless.
"Fare well," A'ram said. Rath echoed his statement for Sharath's benefit.
